Dallas police officers salute as the casket of Dallas Police officer Michael Ktrol after his July 19 funeral mass in Redford Township, Mich.
The Dallas Police Department saw a rise in job applications after the city's police chief gave a rousing speech following the July 7 shooting that left five officers dead.

Four days after the Dallas shooting, Dallas Police Chief David Brown gave a press conference where he urged viewers to join the force to better help their communities, reports Fox 59.

"Serve your communities. We're hiring. Get off that protest line and put an application in. We'll put you in your neighborhood and we will help you resolve some of the problems you're protesting about," Brown said.

After his speech, the Dallas Police Department saw a 344 percent rise in the number of received job applications. The department posted the statistics on its Facebook page Friday.

Drunk, hungry cop pulls gun on Jack in the Box employee for not getting his burger fast enough

A Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy was arrested after a standoff with on-duty cops, who were responding to a call saying that the off-duty deputy, Benjamin Lee, had pulled out a gun instead of his wallet at the Jack in the Box drive-thru.

Lee was arrested earlier this year for the incident, when he reportedly drove through the drive-thru drunk at 2:40 AM.

According to witnesses, Lee became frustrated after waiting in line for a long time and wanted his food quickly. Instead of pulling out his wallet when he reached the drive-thru window, he pulled out his gun and pointed it at the employee.

The employees were naturally scared and called 911 to report the man, who they did not know was a cop. Cops arrived before his food did, however, and a standoff ensued with Lee, who continued to wait for his food because he thought he had done nothing wrong. Video of the incident was posted online anonymously this week, raising more questions about what ensued from people who have seen it.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse: 'Naked attraction' and the apocalyptic rise of nude dating shows

Naked attraction

In Naked Attraction, people pick their favourite genitalia from a lineup.

In the terrible new dawn of dating shows, desirability is judged by genitalia alone. Is this it: the death of all civilisation?

That's it. There's nowhere left for the dating show to go. Between TLC's Undressed and Channel 4's Naked Attraction, the entire genre feels like it's reached its natural endpoint.

We've had shows like Blind Date, where desirability is judged by personality. We've had shows like Take Me Out, where desirability is judged by physical appearance. And now we find ourselves at a terrible new dawn, where desirability is judged by genitalia.

Comment: It almost seems too vulgar to be true. The objectification of the human form is nothing new, but this is taking it to new limits.

Shame! Debbie Wasserman Schultz booed off stage at Florida delegate meeting

Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic Party's governing organization, was booed off stage while speaking at the Florida delegation breakfast before delegates headed to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia.

Ahead of the DNC, Wasserman Schultz was introduced on Monday to Florida as "an unbelievable leader to the party," but the crowd seemed to disagree.

As soon as Wasserman Schultz - who currently serves as a US representative from the state - took the podium, constant booing from the crowd drowned out anything she tried to say.

As Zero Hedge noted two months ago, the US became an unsustainable service sector-based economy starting in the 1970s onward when service sector employment diverged from manufacturing without a corresponding boost in productivity.

Even Alan Greenspan warned that America is "in trouble basically because productivity is dead in the water."

Battle of the sexes - teen style: Girls 'roast' boys in new cyberbullying craze

girls texting

'Roasting' involves vile abuse against peers on social media, a level up from banter, experts said.
Girls are ganging up on boys in a new cyberbullying craze called "roasting", a digital safety expert has warned.

The new bullying takes place via mobile apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook, where girls pick on a boy and vent the most offensive abuse until the victim "completely cracks".

This form of cyberbullying can also involve boys ganging up on girls or turning against each other in "very nasty" ways, experts have warned.

Teachers and parents at leading private schools have been warned to be aware of this new form of cyberbullying, as it tends to happen outside adult oversight because teenagers regard it as just one level up from banter.

Comment: Separate the sexes while they're young so they will never come together in unity.

The house is nestled behind a pub in the sleepy village of Headley.
A man died during a swingers' sex party at a rented mansion in a sleepy Surrey village after a suspected shooting broke out at the 500-strong shindig.

The victim is yet to be identified, but police said the man was around 30 years old, and that he died after being shot at least once. He was declared dead at the scene. A woman was also said to have been shot in the leg during the incident.

"At this early stage no arrests have been made but officers are actively following up a number of lines of inquiry," a police statement read.

The party was reportedly an annual event in Hedley, Surrey, this year advertised on social media as "The Big Mansion Pool Party Part 3" and hosted by reggae musician Braintear Spookie. Neighbors described guests as being of "African origin" and driving luxury sports cars.

Brazilians overcome by economic and political troubles seem indifferent to upcoming Olympics

Olympic Rings have been erected on Copacabana Beach, site of the beach volleyball competition, at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which start Aug. 5.
For a full year before the 2014 World Cup, a fierce debate raged throughout the host nation of Brazil.

Thousands periodically protested the Cup, some predicting chaos or demanding better government services. Others aggressively defended the choice to play host and said Brazil would impress the world with its organization.

Sports fans endlessly analyzed the team itself, speculating on Brazil's chances at winning, or painted their neighborhoods yellow and green to support the players.

The opening ceremony for Rio 2016 is now less than two weeks away, but the country hardly feels seized by the Olympic spirit. The Games haven't dominated the national conversation. Ticket sales have been slow. The dominating sentiment seems neither strong support nor dedicated opposition, but rather general indifference.

Disgusting: Lion's share of pedophile Jimmy Savile's estate goes to lawyers... not to his victims

Victims of notorious serial pedophile Jimmy Savile are set to receive just a fraction of the sum that lawyers working on the case have claimed from the late BBC DJ's estate.

Lawyers have claimed a total of £2.6 million (US$3.4 million), with Osborne and Clark, the firm representing the estate's executor NatWest, claiming £1.8 million, and £689,000 going to lawyers working for the claimants, court documents reveal.

Meanwhile, £1 million has been set aside to pay compensation for the 78 cases of abuse made solely against the estate, with an average of £13,000 going to each victim.

"The effect [of making the payments] will be to exhaust the estate," Mark Cunningham QC, appearing for NatWest, told the High Court in central London last Thursday, when the bank made an application to be relieved of its role of executor.

John Perkins: Why we must reject economic cannibalism

economic cannibalism
"What can I do to fix a broken global economy?" It's a question I've been asked a lot these past few months as I've crisscrossed the US speaking at TED venues, music concerts, the World Affairs Council, bookstores, on radio and TV shows, and at a variety of other forums.

During this election year it is important to recognize that corporations pretty much run the world. Despite the outcome of the elections, they will continue to do so - at least until we organize and change the rules that have created the dominant neoliberal system.

We all support corporations. We buy from them, work for them, manage them, invest in them, and help them with our tax dollars. We have to ask ourselves - and answer - the following questions...
