A man armed with a huge knife was filmed in southern Russia in a tense standoff with cops. Media said he had been wandering the streets after killing the baby daughter of his niece and injuring the mother. Police had to use firearms to arrest him.

The tragedy happened Tuesday morning in the city of Astrakhan, home to over half a million people.

Three investigations are underway after footage showing undercover and uniformed officers savagely beating a man who allegedly attempted to help them carry out an arrest was posted online.

"It's not a professional representation of a police officer for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police," Elizabeth Pittinger of the Citizen Police Review Board said of the incident, particularly the foul language used by the officers, according to CBS. "It should not be tolerated."

"Whether or not the use of force was reasonable, appropriate and necessary will be determined by other facts from witness accounts and other sources of information," Pittinger said.

Parasitic overseers: Lazy Westminster peers claim millions...for doing nothing

There's no such thing as a free lunch, unless you're a peer in the House of Lords, in which case there's also free air travel, train fares, taxi rides and a whole lot of taxpayer-funded perks for... well, nothing.

For years angry Britons have endured reports of wealthy, unelected Lords claiming for things they can well afford.

Yet a new report has added strength to the already bloated case for abolishing the second chamber, after it revealed millions of pounds are being paid in expenses, while Lords barely do their jobs.

In fact, one in seven Lords did not speak at all during the 2016/17 session, yet claimed £1.3 million (US$1.75 million) just for attending debates.

The founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, Jack Ma, has warned people should be prepared for significant disruptions to the job market as artificial intelligence (AI) is going to change the world.

"In the last 200 years, manufacturing [has brought] jobs. But today -- because of the artificial intelligence, because of the robots -- manufacturing is no longer the main engine of creating jobs," he said in a speech at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum in New York City.

Instead, small businesses using the internet to extend their markets will lead economic growth this century, Ma added.

"Talking about manufacturing, we should not be talking Made in China, Made in America," he explained. "It's going to be 'Made in Internet."

As acts of political violence in America increase in regularity, a new poll shows that many college students have no problem with it.

Of those surveyed, a startling 19 percent claimed to support the use of violence to silence speakers they find offensive, the same perspective held by the increasingly violent Antifa groups around the country.

Wanting to see what college students in Washington, D.C. thought of Antifa, Campus Reform took to the campus of American University to ask students their opinion of the violent leftist organization recently labeled a domestic terror organization by the Department of Homeland Security.

Immediately, the students made it clear that they had no problem with the controversial group.

"I like them...beating up fascists is good," said one supporter, while another claimed they were simply trying to "educate" their political adversaries, and violence was many times "a very powerful tool."

Comment: Ponerogenesis in action. Note to braindead ideologues: condoning and engaging in violence against groups you see as politically evil is what made the Nazis evil.

At least 40 million people across the globe live in modern slavery, while 152 million children from 5 to 17 years old are currently involved in child labor, a new report reveals.

"The fact that as a society we still have 40 million people in modern slavery, on any given day shames us all," said Andrew Forrest AO, chairman and founder of the Walk Free Foundation which, along with the International Labour Organization (ILO), contributed to the report.

Women and girls "are disproportionately affected by modern slavery," representing almost 29 million, or 71 percent of the overall total, the report says, adding that slavery is not "merely a historical relic."

Suspect in Starbucks robbery may sue Good Samaritan who stopped him

A man credited with stopping a robbery of a Starbucks in July might now be sued by the suspect, over wounds the would-be robber received from the Good Samaritan.

Ryan Flores, 30, is facing charges for second-degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, stemming from a robbery of a Fresno Starbucks. Flores was arrested after he allegedly tried to rob a barista with a fake gun and wearing a Transformers mask - and in the process, he was subdued by a customer and stabbed with his own knife.

Cregg Jerri, 58, was that customer, and he intervened in the attempted robbery by hitting Flores with a chair from behind. Flores pulled out a knife and fought back, with the two men wrestling over the weapon. Jerri sustained a stab wound to the neck, but was able to take the knife away, and stab Flores an apparent 17 times during the fight.

A senior French cardinal, Philippe Barbarin, is to be tried on charges of not reporting historical child abuse, according to reports.

The clergyman, who is also the Archbishop of Lyon, was once tipped as a successor to Pope Francis.

But he and six other priests have been ordered to appear in court for allegedly not speaking out against abuse said to be committed by another clergyman, Bernard Preynat, in the 1980s.

Red Flag

We didn't normalize Trump, we normalized the Left's violence

Last week, conservative Ben Shapiro gave a speech. At Berkeley. And all across America, people watched their screens to see what sort of violence would erupt.

Reality was anticlimactic. Law enforcement was out in force, at an estimated price tag of $600,000. Concrete barriers were erected to hold back the liberal "antifa," and police obtained permission in advance to use pepper spray. Much of campus was locked down and cleared out. Nine people were arrested. And so, Shapiro arrived, gave his speech, and departed without the mayhem we've become accustomed to seeing at such appearances. And collective relief was sighed.

But how relieved should we be that this is what it takes to maintain order in the face of ... a speech? On the one hand it shows that even in the heart of antifa territory, police and authorities that are actually determined to control them can do so. That's good to know (and gives the lie to chicken authorities who would give antifa a heckler's veto). And yet, those authorities could be forgiven for feeling daunted, even aggrieved, when they realize that every speaker antifa doesn't like means vast sums, and considerable effort, expended on turning your public spaces into a demilitarized zone.
