BBC: Feeding your toddler vegetables protects them from climate change

My quest for a climate-friendly family diet

Graihagh Jackson

Climate journalist Graihagh Jackson goes on a quest to find a diet that's healthy for her child, and helps fight climate change - but will her son actually eat it?

...

... My diet is currently about 75% plants and I follow EAT-Lancet's "Food for the Anthropocene" report recommendations.

...

For those considering cutting meat and animal products out entirely, one factor to consider is age, as a vegan diet can be risky for young children, and there have been cases of death or severe malnutrition of babies or young children being given only plant-based food or drinks.

...

But here comes the next challenge: getting my toddler to actually eat those plants. He frequently tells me he only likes eggs, fish fingers and pancakes and eschews the colourful plate of my carefully cooked (and in my opinion, delicious) vegetables I serve up alongside his favourites.

...

Back in the kitchen, my toddler is blowing Zs in his bed. The Lion King has finally stopped playing and I'm on my hands and knees, trying to scrape the cereal out from between the grout. As my mind meanders, I'm struck by an image of my son. He's older but still has those same curious eyes locked with mine. I imagine him asking me: "Did you do everything you could to fight climate change?" And I want to be able to reply yes, I did. I want the best possible future for my kid and I want him to feel good about those decisions too.
To her credit Graihagh Jackson rejects the vegan option. I agree with Graihagh that feeding kids a vegan diet can be dangerous.

Zionist lobby group 'HonestReporting Canada' wages a silent war on Canadian newsrooms

Canadian journalists are finally speaking out about how the Israel lobby group HonestReporting targets newsrooms to silence Palestinian voices and perspectives.

It's no secret that Canadian newsrooms have long practiced the "Palestine exception" -- a pattern of bias and suppression of Palestinian voices and perspectives. While some Canadian journalists have sought to resist efforts to suppress the truth, Zionist lobbying groups such as HonestReporting and its Canadian chapter, HonestReporting Canada (HRC), have actively targeted newsrooms and journalists who highlight Palestinian perspectives.

Since its founding in 2003, HRC has positioned itself as a media watchdog to combat what it calls "anti-Israel bias" in Canadian newsrooms. But a closer look at the organization's "Success" stories reveals something more troubling: a pattern of pressuring news outlets to reshape or retract coverage, often in ways that sanitize or suppress reporting on Palestinian suffering and settler-colonial violence.

Trump said it: "There's no better word than stupid."

DJT at Press Conference

For anyone who still thinks Donald Trump does not represent the interests of what is called "the deep state" but is actually the shallow or official U.S. state, it is time to think again. If he is not a figurehead for those alleged hidden forces, then he will agree to a Russia-Ukraine settlement on Russia's fundamental terms - that is, a mutual security agreement that stipulates the pulling back of U.S./NATO forces encircling Russia, etc. - when he meets with Putin in Alaska this Friday. There will be no further delay.

This, however, is extremely unlikely. Trump knows little but bullying and the use of the English language as a hammer. "I'm very highly educated," he has said, without a scintilla of irony, "I know words, I know the best words. But there's no better word than stupid."

On the latter assertion he is right: there is no better word than stupid when it's applied correctly.

During his campaign for the presidency, Trump used words more than fifty times to say that he would end the war in Ukraine "within twenty-four hours" of assuming the presidency. He could have accomplished this on day one by issuing an executive order (beside all he did issue), stopping all military aide to Ukraine, but he didn't. Seven months of game-playing have elapsed and the war goes on with Trump's backing laced with doubletalk about how he is seeking peace in Ukraine, is a man of peace, is bringing all American troops back home, and of course he gave a grateful ah-shucks when his brother-in-genocide, Benjamin Netanyahu, showed him a letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

He fully supports the destabilization of Russia, overtly or covertly, as have his predecessors, and this in incompatible with any deal Russia can agree to when he meets with Putin in Alaska.

Israel's EU envoy criticizes bloc's 'obsession' with human rights

Punishing the Jewish state over Gaza only benefits terrorists and weakens the bloc's influence, Haim Regev has claimed.

Israel's ambassador to the EU, Haim Regev, has urged the bloc to stop focusing on Israel's human rights record and has warned against taking any actions to punish the country for its military campaign in Gaza.

Israel has faced mounting backlash over the conflict, with several Western countries recently announcing plans to recognize a Palestinian state and, in some cases, reduce military or trade cooperation with Israel.

In an interview with Politico published on Wednesday, the envoy claimed that some EU states have an "obsession" with Israel's human rights record and singled out Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia as the most unfair. He also accused France, Germany, and the UK of making statements that play into the hands of Hamas and anti-Semitic groups.

Regev insisted that Israel was a "dream" neighbor for the EU because it is a democracy, has no migration issues, and protects gay rights. "Israel is the only player in the region that serves directly the interests of the EU," he added.

Macron's wife hires private eye to dig into Candace Owens: report

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, reportedly hired a private investigator to dig into American podcaster Candace Owens before suing her over claims they describe as baseless and defamatory — including the allegation that the first lady was born a male.

The decision to commission the research shows how seriously the couple is taking their legal battle — a rare move for a sitting head of state to take against an online influencer, according to Financial Times.

The probe, which was carried out by Manhattan-based Nardello & Co., compiled information about Owens' political ties and public statements, according to details shared with the FT.

Investigators documented her connections to far-right figures in France, Britain and the US along with examples of her coverage in Russian state-run media.

It's 4,350 miles (7,000 kilometers) from Moscow to Anchorage, almost a straight shot over the North Pole via great circle navigation. And it's not quite 3,400 miles (5,435 km), again via great circle nav, from Washington, D.C. to what some locals call "Anchortown."

I mention this point of cartography because today I'll discuss the upcoming summit meeting in Alaska between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin. Perhaps it's in Anchorage, or maybe another venue; we don't know yet.

The news hype is that Trump and Putin will work out the bones of a "deal" to end the conflict in Ukraine. Hmm... We'll see.

And along those hopeful lines, it's worth pondering what a U.S.-Russia rapprochement might mean to the price of gold, oil, and much else in the global marketplace. Imagine the complexities of lifting sanctions and opening up more trade with Russia. There's money to be made, for sure.

But for now, let's discuss Alaska. Let's ponder Trump and Putin, big-time geopolitics, averting nuclear war, and some fascinating history. We'll begin 90 years ago in 1935, with a quick note about a long-deceased Army officer, General William "Billy" Mitchell (1879 - 1936), widely credited as the father of American air power. Then we'll get to what to expect as things unfold between the U.S. and Russia.

DOJ settles lawsuit against Biden administration over COVID vaccine mandate for federal workers

Today's settlement with Feds For Freedom requires the government to expunge the COVID-19 vaccine status records of federal workers and prohibits discrimination based on vaccine status.

Feds For Freedom, a nonprofit representing 6,000 federal workers, sued the Biden administration in December 2021 after President Joe Biden signed an executive order mandating the vaccines for federal employees and contractors.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) today reached a settlement. It "marks a significant victory for individual rights and serves as a powerful, implicit acknowledgment of the government's overreach," Feds for Freedom said in a press release.

Under the settlement, the U.S. government must expunge the COVID-19 vaccine status records of federal employees. The settlement also prohibits future discrimination based on vaccine status and reimburses a portion of Feds For Freedom's legal expenses.

Feds For Freedom declined to reveal any other terms of the settlement, which was not made public.

A former diplomat, World Bank consultant, and married father of three was arrested last month and charged with sexually abusing three children under the age of 10 in Washington, DC, according to a report.

Thomas Mahony, 42, an Australian national, is accused of abusing two 7-year-old girls and one 8-year-old boy — with all three incidents occurring at his family home during playdates with his children, The Washington Post reported.

The alleged abuse occurred in separate incidents in November 2023, February 2023, and as recently as July 2025.

Police were notified as early as the first incident in 2023, but the US Attorney's office did not prosecute Mahony because of "consideration of the government's burden of beyond a reasonable doubt," court records reviewed by the outlet stated.

The World Bank told the outlet that Mahony's employment was terminated when they were informed of his arrest and charges on July 23.

Update: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the shooter as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White of Kennesaw, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. Little is known about him yet, but neighbors have confirmed earlier reports that White was angry about the Covid-19 vaccine, having concluded it caused him to suffer from some kind of illness. One described him as having done yard work in the neighborhood, and expressed surprise at the news, telling Fox 5, "I was like, 'there's no way,' ...not the kind of person I would thought to do that."

A police officer is dead after a surgical-mask-wearing gunman riddled the Atlanta headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with bullets. His parents think it was an act of revenge, saying their son believed he had an illness caused by the controversial Covid-19 vaccine. The attack ended with the shooter's own death, but it's unclear at this point if his mortal wound was self-inflicted.

The significance of Alaska

On Friday, 15 August Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska. The choice of that location sends a very hopeful message to the world.

Last week I had the privilege to sit down for some personal education with a seasoned author and geostrategist Admiral Davor Domazet, whom I mentioned here last month in "Defeat of the West's strategy of chaos." As we discussed the ongoing geopolitical events, the summit between the US President Trump and his Russian counterpart was just announced.

Admiral Domazet said that the choice of the summit's location would be extremely important and that it would itself be a message to the world. He was only sure of one thing: it would not be anywhere in Western Europe.

We did not guess that Alaska would be the place, but once that choice was announced, it made perfect sense. It does send a very important message: Russia and the United States are coming together in peace, completing an important but interrupted cycle of history. I alluded to this in an article I drafted in February of this year
