Fire in the SkyS

Fireball sightings reported over DC area Monday night

Washington - Did you see a flash in the sky tonight?

Multiple reports came into the WTOP newsroom Monday night about a fireball in the area. One listener traveling eastbound on Interstate 66 toward the Route 7 exit said they saw one headed northbound.

Fox 5's Greg Redfern and WTOP's space expert said he and another person saw a bright fireball to the northeast around 8:25 p.m. Redfern says the fireball appeared white to him while another said it was red.

It was moving downward and was "bright as tonight's moon" said Redfern. While he says his view was partially blocked by trees, he says it was a good one.

So far there have been more than 30 reports of fireball sightings to the American Meteor Society, seen as far north as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and other northeastern areas.

Flashback British astronomer predicts increase in fireball meteors as Earth enters debris field

Midland scientist predicts increase in objects falling from the sky as Earth nears debris field in space

We hope you enjoyed the Chelyabinsk event, says a UK scientist, cause there's more coming!
A leading Birmingham astronomer has predicted Midland sky watchers will see an increase in spectacular meteors like the one which hurtled into Russia at 17,000mph.

More than 500 people were reportedly injured when the basketball-sized fragment smashed into the Ural mountains, close to the border with Kazakhstan, at about 5.20am yesterday.

The meteor was so bright, as it pierced the skies over Russia, that would have outshone the sun, Great Barr scientist Andrew Lound said.

Its impact created a crater six metres wide, but it was the shockwaves which caused the most devastation, blowing out windows and destroying buildings in cities thousands of kilometres away.

Comment: Forget about funding for advanced warning systems - NASA et al are broke. Look to the past for what is to come!

Celestial Intentions: Comets and the Horns of Moses

The above article was written in the aftermath of the Chelyabinsk event in February, so it's unclear if the British astronomer was referring to a debris field Earth was passing through at the time, or if he meant a larger quantity of debris in general. If the latter, then he has apparently called it correctly because meteor fireball sightings continue to increase month after month!

Meteorite crashed in a small village in Brazil:

A suspected meteorite crashed in town Rubber, Vicenza district, North Forest in Pernambuco, and is worrying farmers in the region. The object had fallen from the sky on the evening of last Monday (23).Although seem unlikely, since Wednesday (25), and until the 25th of November, happens a meteor shower, known as Oriônidas in space. The phenomenon occurs when the Earth crosses the orbit of Halley's Comet, taken as the origin of rock fragment. Rain records a typical rate 20-25 meteors per hour - which can be seen on a dark night and clear skies. Inside, the resident who found the material not resist and kept the "burnt stone" of 1.2 pound home. The information was confirmed late on Thursday (26) by the Mayor of Vicenza, Paulo Tadeu. ...more

Extremely bright meteor explodes over Central Bosnia

Image
Translated by SOTT.net reader

This morning at 05:51 hours an extremely brilliant meteor exploded over central Bosnia, authorities announced from the Astronomical Society Orion from Sarajevo. Despite partly cloudy weather this phenomenon has been registered in the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute in Sarajevo and the meteorological station Gradačac, where recently a meteor camera is set.

A joint project of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute and Astronomical Society Orion from Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina on establishing a meteor network gives new results. From recordings from two stations is the trajectory of the body determined. A piece of cosmic material 'turned' on at an altitude of about 120 kilometers. After 36 km of flight, with an explosion the meteor shuts down at an altitude of 95 kilometers. At the moment of greatest shine the meteor had a magnitude of -4.5", cited from Orion.

More reports of meteor sightings on Friday night are coming in from Indiana. Nearly 700 people across six states already reported sightings of meteors Friday morning.

The American Meteor Society (AMS) said witnesses from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin reported a bright light moving across the morning sky.

An estimated trajectory computed from the witness reports shows the meteor was traveling from the west to east and ended somewhere over eastern Indiana.

Giant fireball explodes off coast of Zamboanga, Philippines

For two days now, villagers and authorities in the west coast of Zamboanga remain baffled after a big ball of fire streaked from the southern skies at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, hitting the coastal water before exploding and illuminating nearby villages.

Senior Inspector Edilberto Alvarez, the police commander of Station 9, confirmed the mysterious phenomenon but could neither offer a clear explanation of the incident at Barangays La Paz and Talisayan.

Alvarez said a dull but loud explosion occurred later at the sea water fronting Barangay Talisayan.

"It was confusing because based on my own experience an improvised bomb if exploded would not create such bright and colorful light covering a massive area compared to that one... whatever it was," Alverez said.

The police official also dismissed the possibility that the ball of fire that exploded was man-made.

Comment: It's very unlikely that anything actually hit the water in this case. They would really know about it if a space rock hit either terra firma or the ocean!

A "dull but loud explosion" is consistent with a bolide exploding high in the atmosphere. Although, from a distance, they often appear to have 'fallen to the ground/sea', fireballs are generally so far up that the Earth's curvature will make them 'disappear over the horizon'.

Tanzanians see unusual night skylight - baffles many

Dar es Salaam and Arusha - The sighting of a strange bright light in the sky on Sunday night left hundreds of Tanzanians amazed with astronomy experts connecting the incident with unpredictably heavy rains that pounded Dar es Salaam and other parts of the country on Monday.

The 'strange light in the sky' took a number of Dar es Salaam and Arusha residents by surprise and the incident scared many. Sunday nights normally find some people in big cities enjoying last hours of the weekend in public places but this time round the situation was different as some gave up drinking and rushed home fearing the worst.

Reports from weather stations around the world, however, indicate that Sunday night's sky sighting was that of 'Comet Ison' and the occurrence had been predicted before. The comet may be sighted in different parts of the world between September 29 and October 1.

Dr Noorali Jiwaji, lecturer at the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) at the faculty of Science Technology and Environmental Studies said the incident was likely to have built up moisture sufficiently thus causing the heavy rains on Monday. The last Sunday night, from around 7 pm most parts of the country observed the middle of the circle with a small point of light like a star moving steadily with the cloudy disk thus causing panic to some people.

NASA reporting mysterious green patches in sky?

What is it? Some surely natural phenomenon has appeared in a video that, so far, has defied clear identification. The above time-lapse video was made to record Perseid meteors above Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, Canada late this summer. The video, which ran from 9:30 pm August 11 to 3:00 am the next morning, records several meteor and satellite streaks beyond a picturesque background. Each image records a 30 second exposure. At about 25 seconds into the video, however, an unusual patchy green glow appears to cover the sky. Possible explanations include airglow, aurora, lighting from an artificial or natural source, or something completely different. This APOD is an attempt not only to solve this intriguing sky riddle, but to measure how powerful the APOD readership is as a citizen-science, collective-intelligence engine. If you have insight into what might be causing this phenomenon, please contribute to the discussion.
