Best of the Web: Ex-prosecutor general: Ukraine has lost 500,000 troops

Ukraine's leaders should frankly admit that they have lost 500,000 service members since the start of the conflict with Russia, and that the monthly casualty rate is at around 30,000, former prosecutor general Yury Lutsenko has said.

President Vladimir Zelensky's goverment could convince reluctant citizens to join the fight by publicly admitting the heavy losses on the battlefield and declaring that the country's very existence is in jeopardy, he believes.

Ukrainians "must know how many have died, and then all debates about the mobilization will be settled," he added.

Speaking to the country's media on Wednesday, the former official proposed a number of steps to address the draft-dodging and corruption that is hampering the country's conscription efforts.

Comment: Nothing says 'winning' like the call to totally mobilize a population. Russia has already defeated three NATO armies. The chances that a fourth could ever be constituted are slim to none, even if armaments could be found. There are no personnel to use them. And the U.S./NATO know it.

Sergey Karaganov: "Russia's European journey is over - It is now a great Eurasian power"

A very superb interview. Evgeny Shostakov, in conversation with Sergey Karaganov

In terms of being a global centre of power, the Old World is finished. Moscow understands this, but our former partners remain in denial.

Not long ago, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said: "The European Union must be ready for war by the end of the decade." Berlin has started talking about the return of universal military service and preparations for a confrontation with Moscow. There are similar sentiments in Poland. But is it only because of the events in Ukraine?

What is the reason for the upsurge in fighting talk in Europe?
Leading Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta talks to international relations expert Sergey Karaganov, who is the honorary chairman of Russia's Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, an academic supervisor at the School of International Economics and Foreign Affairs Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow, and a former Kremlin advisor.
Evgeny Shostakov: Mr. Karaganov, given the current difficult foreign policy situation, is there a need for a conceptually different theory of deterrence against Russia's enemies in order to stop the growing confrontation at an early stage, and to discourage our adversaries from fueling conflicts?

Sergey Karaganov: The elites of Western Europe - and especially in Germany - are in a state of historical failure. The main basis of their 500-year domination [of the world] was military superiority, on which the economic, political and cultural dominance of the West was built. But this has been knocked out from under them. With the help of this advantage, they manipulated the world's resources in their favor. First they plundered their colonies, and later they did the same, but with more sophisticated methods.

Comment: Brilliant interview with vision, clarity, hope and spirit.

Is Biden about to put 10 million Hispanics on the path to American citizenship?

amlo

If Biden gets the Republicans to go along with his Mexican counterpart's proposal to grant work visas to those 10 million Hispanics who the latter claims have worked in the US for 10 years, then they'd be able to apply for a green card and eventually citizenship five years after that, which could lead to the imposition of one-party rule by 2032 if those new citizens in battleground states vote Democrat as expected.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who's known by his initials as AMLO, revealed during a press conference on Friday that "Mexico asked US authorities to grant visas to at least 10 million Hispanic migrants that have worked for more than 10 years in the country." It also asked that the US pay regional states $20 billion in exchange for helping stem illegal immigration. AMLO added that the sanctions on Cuba and Venezuela should be lifted too since he partially blames them for this process.

If Biden complies with the first of his three requests, then that would place 10 million Hispanics on the path to American citizenship since they could turn their work visa into a green card, after which they could apply for citizenship with full voting rights after five years. The Pew Research Center cited US Census Bureau data from 2020 to report last November that at least 1.6 million illegals live in Texas and 900,000 in Florida, which could have serious implications for forthcoming elections if they're legalized.

Comment: There were many contested factors in the 2020 presidential election that gave rise to suspect tallies and false conclusions. There is no indication the next election will be fair, accurate or honorable.

For past elections, political party sign-ups were offered at the Department of Motor Vehicles where employees indicated a particular voter registration table. Migrants received drivers licenses and Democrats swelled their ranks.

Russia has announced that its forces have conducted a range of missile strikes targeting Ukraine's military-industrial base. Kiev has confirmed the attacks, admitting that its air defenses failed to intercept most of the projectiles.

In a statement on Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had carried out "a group strike" using high-precision sea- and air-based weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. The barrage, which took place in the morning, targeted military-industrial facilities, officials said, without providing details on the results of the attack.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack targeted various types of facilities in Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Khmelnitsky regions as well as in the parts of Zaporozhye region controlled by Kiev.

Authorities in the Khmelnitsky region reported six explosions, adding that one attack targeted an unspecified infrastructure facility. Local officials said that at least two people had been killed in the strikes.

Officials in Kharkov said that at least four rocket strikes had damaged an unnamed business and an educational institution, claiming there had been several casualties, including an elderly woman.

Comment: The fight moves to the skies as Russia shoots down two Ukrainian jets:
A close air support jet and a fighter were destroyed by air defenses on the Ukrainian side of the frontline, the military said

Russian forces have downed two Ukrainian warplanes in the past 24 hours, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Sunday.

The ministry identified one as a Su-25 close air support plane, which it said was shot down by Russian air defense not far from Dnepropetrovsk (known as Dnepr in Ukraine), some 150km north of the frontline. The other jet was a Su-27 fighter, downed not far from Krivoy Rog, about 140km west of Dnepropetrovsk, officials added.

The Russian military also said it had intercepted 14 missiles fired from US-supplied HIMARS and Soviet-era Uragan missile systems, as well as six Ukrainian anti-ship Neptune rockets. According to the statement, Russian forces have also destroyed 38 Ukrainian drones across the frontline over the past 24 hours.
In total, Russia has taken out 567 Ukrainian warplanes, 265 helicopters, and 10,526 drones since the start of the conflict in February 2022, the Defense Ministry claimed.
In October, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Moscow's forces had received new military systems, which at the time allowed them to shoot down 24 Ukrainian planes in just five days. He did not provide further details.

However, TASS news agency later reported, citing sources, that Russia had used an S-400 Triumph air defense system, which has a range of up to 400 km. It was also said to have been equipped with active homing heads, and to have been operating in tandem with an A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft.

Defense chief Austin under fire over handling of undisclosed medical condition: 'Dereliction of duty'

Lloyd Austin
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin
The House Armed Services Committee, joining statements from across the political and defense spectrums, stated their "concerns" in a press release Sunday over Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's delayed health "disclosure" to government officials as he reportedly remains in the hospital.

The committee released a bipartisan press statement from Republican Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers and Democrat Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith stating that the committee has "concerns" with how Austin's "condition was handled." The congressmen additionally noted there are still "several questions" that "remain unanswered," emphasizing the secretary's "current health status."

"While we wish Sec. Austin a speedy recovery, we are concerned with how the disclosure of the Secretary's condition was handled. Several questions remain unanswered including what the medical procedure and resulting complications were, what the Secretary's current health status is, how and when the delegation of the Secretary's responsibilities were made, and the reason for the delay in notification to the President and Congress," the press release stated.

Something lost, never to be found again

A strange ennui and distracted attention envelops the West today.

Hat-tip to Simplicius' Bones of Tomorrow, in which he reflects on a Culture that has become debased; its lures that used to trap us into the 'Myth of the West' lie withered, as patently false idols. The dimming fire has squandered any sense of 'magic' in the guttering West, or indeed of hope to recoup this something 'lost'. It is the wistful realisation that - as it stands - the myth is never likely to offer anything of lasting value again.

The figments of a utopian future once promised, nonetheless continue their seductive hold on our psyche, but only on attention-hopping, hypnotic touch-screens. Cultural touchstones crumble around us like rotting edifices one after another. Yet, we are too distracted to take real notice, or to absorb the significance. Counter 'currents' in the shadows gleefully applaud.

Where we stand now is where we've always stood - in the quicksands of time. A passing of the guard; one world fading, deep into the slow, declining burnout phase, the natural process of decay and renewal, whilst taking us forward towards some next, still-to-sprout, green shoots. A sense of something lost and never to be found again, which we all endure these days.

The 'Elect' though, have deliberately raised the stakes. They do not want to 'let go'. They have determined that, with the western train wrecked on its own cultural 'wall', the 'End of Time' story of convergence on a common future is 'over' too.

And along with it, the claimed western mandate to dictate the 'direction forward' is over also.

Beneath the gimcrack and baubled veneer, the western meta-narrative "from Plato to NATO, that superior ideas and practices whose origins lie in ancient Greece, and have been transmitted down the ages so that those in the West today, are the lucky inheritors of a superior cultural DNA" has transpired to be nothing more than the faded tinselry of hollow narrative.

This is the deep fear of western political leaders - they know the 'Narrative' to be a fiction. Nonetheless, they go on telling it to themselves, despite knowing that our era has been made increasingly and dangerously contingent on this meta-myth. Absent the Myth, they sense, the western project, and western prosperity, could disintegrate utterly.

Biden campaign secretly meeting with corporate media to demand better coverage

joe biden midterm elections comment
President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is reportedly communicating with corporate media reporters and editors in off-the-record meetings to criticize news coverage of the presidential race, Semafor reported Monday.

The campaign has created a spreadsheet laying out where corporate outlets have "fallen short" on their reporting about the campaign trail, according to Semafor. Campaign officials have reportedly been particularly exasperated by corporate media's extensive coverage of former President Donald Trump, reportedly arguing the outlets are too focused on his criminal indictments rather than his alleged flammable statements.

The campaign's meeting with The New York Times (NYT) reportedly did not go over well for unmentioned reasons, according to Semafor. Other than the Times, the meetings with outlets like The Washington Post were reportedly "substantive" and "productive."

South Korea accused North Korea of firing hundreds of artillery shells near its disputed sea boundary for the third straight day as the North pledges further military action in response to any provocation.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff on Sunday claimed North Korea fired off over 90 rounds near the country's western sea boundary with the North, the Associated Press reported. The South warned of an overwhelming response if the North does not stop halt the firings, the news wire added.

Kim Yo Jung, the sister of the North's leader Kim Jong Un, said Sunday the Korean People's Army (KPA) detonated blasting powder, which simulated the sound of its coastal artillery, in a test of the South Korean military's detection abilities.

US spies believe Israel wouldn't defeat Hezbollah - WaPo

A secret assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Washington has found that Israeli forces would find it "difficult to succeed" in a two-front war against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have engaged in tit-for-tat exchanges of fire with Hezbollah militants since the start of the war with Hamas in October. Initially limited in scale, Hezbollah's pounding of an Israeli intelligence base with missiles on Saturday in response to Israel assassinating a senior Hamas leader in Beirut several days earlier, has marked a significant escalation.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to make a "fundamental change" to the security situation along the Lebanese border, American officials have privately warned him against opening a second front, the Washington Post reported.

"If it were to do so, a new secret assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) found that it will be difficult for Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to succeed because its military assets and resources would be spread too thin given the conflict in Gaza," citing two anonymous officials and a classified report by the DIA.
