Libyan rival factions form UN-backed unity government

Libya's rival factions have announced the formation of a unity government as part of an UN-brokered peace deal aimed at stemming the ongoing chaos in the North African country. The make-up of the new Libyan government was announced by the unity presidential council on Tuesday.

The Tunis-based presidential council said in a statement that it has agreed on a 32-member cabinet with members drawn from across the country. It is not clear where the new government would be based in or can govern the oil-rich North African country.

In October last year, UN special envoy for Libya Bernardino Leon proposed the formation of a power-sharing government with a list of candidates for the new cabinet. He nominated Fayez Sarraj a member of the Tripoli-based parliament, as the Libyan prime minister. Also among the new government's posts, were three deputies for the prime minister, representing the country's east, west and south, and two ministers to complete a presidential council.

Libya has been grappling with violence and political uncertainty since the oil-rich country's former dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, was deposed in an uprising in 2011. Armed groups and regional factions have been fighting for power over the past years.

Since August 2014, when militias seized the capital, Tripoli, Libya has had two parliaments and two governments with one, the General National Congress (GNC), run by the rebels in the capital and the other, which is internationally-recognized, based in the northeastern city of Tobruk.

The proposal for national unity government was dismissed by the rival factions on October 12. Mahmud Abdel Aziz, a lawmaker from the GNC, said that the proposed government "is rejected" as "it will deepen difference between the Libyan people."

Comment: The US destabilized Libya and saw to the removal of Gaddafi, leaving Libya ripped apart and primed for invasion, greed and corruption. Whether this new government profile works or not, hopefully it is a step in the direction of Libyan stability and recovery from purposefully engineered destruction, chaos and the suffering of its people. Turkey to build its 2nd foreign military base in Somalia under the guise of 'fighting terrorism'

Turkey will build the military center in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu that will be capable of training more than 1,500 local troops to boost security in Horn of Africa.

Turkey is poised to build a second foreign military base to assist security forces in Somalia in their fight against the Al-Shabaab militant group, Turkish media reported Tuesday.

Russia's aerial onslaught in Syria is effectively restricting US & Turkey's ambitions


The move comes less than a month after Turkey said it had reached a deal with Qatar to set up its first military base abroad.

Comment: If it weren't for NATO Al-Shabaab wouldn't be the menace that it is. Certainly then, Turkey's role won't be in defeating them but merely exploiting the situation for NATO's benefit.

The Russian Army and Navy will deploy additional forces and modern weapons to its southwest in reply to NATO's plans to boost its presence in the Black Sea region, a Russian newspaper reported quoting Defense Ministry sources.

The military is planning to test the fresh forces, infrastructure and weapons deployed to the regions bordering the Black Sea in the headquarters exercise Caucasus-2016, scheduled for September, the sources told Novaya Gazeta daily. The exercise will include joint use of various forces in the Caucasus Mountains and on the Black Sea, they added.

The plans to reinforce Russia's southwestern borders must be tied with NATO's plans to boost its military presence in the region, as well as with its constant effort aimed at increasing the combat abilities of the Ukrainian Army, the newspaper suggested after receiving the sources' information.

Comment: Washington's aggression ensures no peaceful reconciliation between NATO members and Russia. But that's precisely what the warmongers want.

Victims of alleged abuse at the hands of the late Lord Janner were left "devastated" yesterday after his criminal case was dropped decades after they first accused him of child sex abuse.

Greville Janner had been charged with 22 sexual offences dating back to the 1960s against nine alleged victims, most of whom were under 16 at the time.


Comment: The alleged 22 child sex offences, involving nine children and young adults then cared for in children's homes, range from indecent assaults to buggery.


Yet despite what police described as significant amounts of evidence, prosecutors declined to bring charges against Janner on two occasions, before finally being forced into an embarrassing U-turn last year.

But legal proceedings were left in limbo following Janner's death last month, just days after he was found unfit to stand trial at the Old Bailey.

Announcing the decision not to press ahead with the planned trial of facts, prosecutor Richard Whittam QC revealed in court that more charges were scheduled to be brought against the peer.

Mr Whittam said that a copy of the peer's death certificate had been produced for the court file, bringing an end to the matter.

Trial judge Mr Justice Openshaw agreed: "There is nothing more to be said. That's the end of the proceedings."

The US move to impose new sanctions against Iran, announced immediately after the official implementation day of the nuclear deal with Tehran and the removal of the related restrictions, is provocative and unexpected, experts told Sputnik.

On Sunday, the US Treasury Department sanctioned 11 entities and individuals, including six Iranians and one Chinese citizen, for their involvement in procurement on behalf of Iran's ballistic missile program. The move came right after UN, EU, and US sanctions were lifted from Iran following the implementation of Tehran's nuclear obligations.

"The fact that the new sanctions were announced literally hours after many sanctions were halted on implementation day, seems to show that the US government is being intentionally provocative and that it doesn't feel the need to be trusted or taken seriously," Mohammad Marandi, a professor with Tehran University, said.

Russia's aerial onslaught against militants in Syria has entirely changed the dynamics in the region, giving boost to Assad's army and forcing the US and Turkey to scale back their ambitions: the US has softened its demands for Assad's departure and Turkey has reduced its support for anti-government fighters, according to Middle East experts.

Syrian army units, backed by dozens of Russian airstrikes, have gained control over strategic swaths of the country's territory, driving the rebels back to their rear-guard bases across the Turkish border, the Middle East correspondent for the Los Angeles Times acknowledges in his article.

This success, the author says, has strengthened the government's position in the run-up to Syrian peace negotiations, which are scheduled to begin next week in Geneva.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the banker whom, on 4 February 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama's Assistant Secretary of State for European & Eurasian Affairs instructed the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine to lead Ukraine after the planned coup would be over (which occurred 18 days later), was apparently ousted from his post, on Thursday, January 14th, barely shy of his second anniversary as Ukraine's Prime Minister.

The person who ousted him appears to have been the former CIA asset whom the U.S. Administration allowed to run as a candidate in Ukraine's Presidential election on 25 May 2014, and who had won that election — the billionaire Petro Poroshenko. Poroshenko had assisted in the coup, and admitted it to the EU's investigator who was sent right after the overthrow. (The information that it had been a coup instead of an authentic revolution came as a shock to the EU's Foreign Affairs Minister.)

Comment: Too bad it wasn't something like the people rising up in the streets and demanding that the Western-heel-licking, sycophantic, utterly corrupt and fascistic Arseniy Yatsenyuk that caused him to be ejected from office. Instead, we have to settle with the results of political in-fighting and maneuvers by another Western-heel-licking, sycophantic, utterly corrupt and fascistic politician, Porky Poroshenko. Oh well.

Since the deadliest terrorist attack in Asia on October 12th, 2002 at two Bali resort nightclubs killed 202 people targeting mostly Western tourists (88 Australians and seven Americans died) followed three years later by the October 2005 Bali suicide bombings killing 23 more innocent victims at three restaurants, Indonesia has largely managed to avoid major deadly outbreaks of terrorism on its own soil. The 19th largest geographical nation in the world comprised of more than 17,000 archipelago islands in Southeast Asia contains the planet's fourth largest population of over a quarter billion people behind only China, India and the United States. Its current fast rising census to date is 265,278,532. With 86% of its residents identifying themselves as Muslim, Indonesia is the home of more Muslims than any other nation on earth.

More than 500 known Indonesian citizens have fought as Islamic State jihadists in Iraq and Syria. In the face of growing terrorism around the world where typically Islamic extremists are the purported suspects, Indonesia's national government has received international praise for its diligent efforts over the years to combat terrorism. This latest terrorist attack follows on the two-day heels of yet another ISIS terrorist act in Istanbul.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was signed into law as a federal holiday in 1983. I do not wish to trivialize this accomplishment: it took great persistence by civil society groups and it had to conquer serious opposition. Yet what it has established is an indigestible paradox in the nation's list of saints and heroes.

Recall that the jury in the 1999 civil trial examining the assassination reached a startling conclusion on December 8, 1999: US government agencies had conspired successfully to kill Dr. King.

Mainstream media carried little about this trial and verdict in 1999 and they persist in ignoring it to this day.

When challenged they tend to say that the claims were muddy and confused and vulnerable to easy refutation. Actually, the plaintiffs' case was strong, and the jury, after sitting and listening to presentation of evidence and argument from November 15 to December 8, was quickly able to reach consensus on the verdict. The great variety of evidence presented by attorney William Pepper pointed to the impossibility of the lone assassin hypothesis (James Earl Ray) and to the conspiring of several bodies, including the local police (Memphis Police Department), the mafia (local representative Frank Liberto), and federal police, intelligence and military units. In other words, the combination of forces that carried out the murder was not very different from that which had killed President Kennedy. Such was the planning, the commitment, and the determination of the assassins that there was little chance Dr. King could have survived the day. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter onto the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.

Reading the transcript of this trial takes some time (it's about 2700 pages long), but having done so I am impressed by attorney Pepper's persistence and skill in getting to the heart of this matter. Yet if the findings are to have political force, and if the mainstream media persist in pretending the trial never took place, it falls to active citizens to do their part to make the trial and the findings known. They should tell people about this trial, encourage people to read it, quote from it, and emphasize its importance. They should not let it be trivialized (as the current Wikipedia article on Martin King tries to do) by pretending the claims of government conspiracy were weak and have been refuted—they have not.
