NATO's military presence along Russian border is Cuban missile crisis in reverse

nato russia
Commenting on the buildup of NATO forces on Russia's borders and the increasing frequency and scale of military exercises, French journalist Christine Bierre, editor-in-chief of the Solidarite & Progres newspaper, warned that the situation is reminiscent of a Cold War-era conflict which brought the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation.

In a recent analysis for the paper, the official organ of the French political party of the same name, Bierre warned that "when we talk about the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, only in reverse, this is not just rhetoric. Nearly 60,000 soldiers of NATO and allied countries have been participating in four series of maneuvers in the Baltic countries, Romania and Poland."

"The most provocative among these exercises were the recently completed Anaconda-16 drills in Poland," the journalist suggested. "Moreover, they were not organized by NATO, but by Poland itself, which the British and Americans have been inciting against Warsaw's old Russian enemy. In total, these exercises involved around 31,000 troops from 24 countries, making them the largest the country has seen since the collapse of the Warsaw Pact in 1991."

As if that weren't enough to escalate tensions between Moscow and NATO, Anaconda-16 is being complemented by Baltops-16, Saber Strike-16, and Swift Response-16, the latter involving Germany and Poland. "The chart published by the Department of Defense...speaks for itself," Bierre noted.

The Solution

After the uprising of the 17th June
The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

The US guided-missile destroyer Gravely breached international navigation safety rules by coming within dangerous proximity of the Yaroslav Mudry, a Russian frigate, in the eastern Mediterranean, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.

The USS Gravely approached the Yaroslav Mudry, a Russian frigate, on June 17, passing across her course at a "dangerous" distance of 180 meters (55ft), the Defense Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The encounter occurred in international waters. The Yaroslav Mudry did not deviate from her course and refrained from engaging in dangerous maneuvering with the US warship, the ministry added.

US looking to deploy Israeli missile system on Russian borders

Israeli Iron Dome missile system
The US military has tested an Israeli short-range missile for possible use in its European network of missile systems to deter Russia, says a US Army general.

Major General Glenn Bramhall of the US Army's Air and Missile Defense Command made the comments on Monday, as he visited the occupied Palestinian territories.

Bramhall said his units needed a reliable system to counter less powerful missile threats as a third tier beside the Army's array of midrange Patriot and THAAD missile systems.

"Patriot and THAAD are great systems that do what they were designed to do. But I don't think we would want to waste a Patriot or a THAAD missile on something that can be affected by something that's lower cost and is actually designed for that job itself," the general told Reuters.

For that purpose, he said the US military has test-launched a variant of the Israeli "Tamir" rocket which is incorporated to the Tel Aviv regime's so-called Iron Dome missile system.

Turkey PM denies apology to Russia over downed jet

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says Turkey has only expressed regrets to Russia over a downed jet in Syria, denying reports of an apology.

Yidirim also reversed an earlier offer of compensation to Russia for shooting down one of Moscow's military jets in November, Turkish media reported on Tuesday.

"Compensating Russia is not on the table, we have only expressed our regrets," CNN-Turk cited him as saying, hours after he said Ankara was ready to offer compensation for the incident.

The Kremlin said on Monday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had apologized to Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a letter.

Erdogan's spokesman confirmed the letter, but said the Turkish president had only expressed regret and asked the family of the pilot killed after the downing to "excuse us."

The denial came just as the Kremlin said on Tuesday that President Putin will hold a phone conversation with Erdogan on Wednesday.

Flashback Trump and the liberal intelligentsia: a view from Europe

Donald Trump

A new specter haunts the American elites: the candidacy of Donald Trump in the US President election and his success so far in the Republican primaries. The Republican establishment itself hopes to block his rise, even as he is drawing huge crowds into the party. As for the Democrats, they are hoping that his repugnant image will make the election of Hillary Clinton that much easier.

Let's start by admitting what seems obvious: Trump is vulgar, insulting, demagogic. He says one thing and then the opposite, and shows distinct signs of megalomania.

That much said, the anti-Trump campaign is typical of the rhetoric of the dominant political class.

Our indignant elites resort to one of their favorite arch reflexes: warnings against "fascism" and yet another "new Hitler". Ever since Nasser was "Hitler on the Nile", when he nationalized the Suez Canal, "new Hitlers" spring up in the Western imagination like mushrooms in an autumn woods: Milosevic, LePen, Putin, Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Assad have all been subjected to such comparisons.

After Brexit, ramped up warnings of global economic instability and financial panic

Jenga
The global economic fallout of Thursday's referendum by Britain to leave the European Union continued over the weekend amid growing warnings that the ongoing market sell-off, which wiped $2.5 trillion from the values of world equities markets Friday, is only the most visible manifestation of a much deeper crisis of the global economy.

Over the past month, both the International Monetary Fund and Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen have warned in effect that the US and world economy face conditions comparable to what some economists have called "secular stagnation," characterized by a long-term reduction in growth rates.

On Sunday, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), sometimes referred to as the "central bankers' bank," added its voice to this chorus. It warned of deep-rooted problems in the global economy.

The report, which was drafted prior to Thursday's referendum, said the world economy was "threatened by a 'risky trinity': debt levels that are too high, productivity growth that is too low, and room for policy manoeuvre that is too narrow." It cast doubt on the ability to continue to combat crises with monetary policy.

Killary hijacks NYC Pride by making sure you think she cares

Hillary pride
© Hilary Swift for The New York TimesHillary Clinton appeared on Sunday at the pride parade in Manhattan in an unannounced appearance.
It is difficult to surprise at New York City's pride parade — that pulsing kaleidoscope of pink unicorn horns and rainbow undergarments, bejeweled miniature dogs and glitter-specked revelers who seemed to have misplaced their shoes. But around 1:45 p.m. Sunday, beneath a virtually cloudless sky, something was afoot on Christopher Street. Lights flashed. Officers stirred. Sirens pierced the Cher soundtrack wafting over Greenwich Village.

Soon, a van door opened.

"Hillaryyyyyyyyy!" someone hollered from the sidewalk. And so began a very low-speed chase along the city's foremost corridor of gay rights.

For four blocks or so — beginning steps from the Stonewall Inn, the nexus of the modern gay rights movement — Hillary Clinton led a mayor, a governor, a phalanx of aides, a crush of reporters and several beleaguered security personnel on a 15-minute stroll.

Comment: Four blocks. She mesmerized the crowd, convinced them she cared about gays and got a proverbial ton of free PR, this glowing article comes from the New York Times, for example.

Comment: It's pretty clear to those still thinking critically that Hillary is a dangerous psychopath. She's only 'winning' this 'election' because the mainstream media, in cooperation with powerful financial interests, are installing her as their next presidential puppet. Stanford's own Rodolfo Cortes Barriagan used statistical modeling to show that the chances that errors in state primaries which all favored Hillary happening naturally had a probability of 1 in 77 billion - in other words, there is no democracy and our votes are irrelevant. Go on and cheer though - a lying murderess shows up at a major Pride event in order to garner some attention for herself.

Greenspan warns an American crisis is imminent, urges a return to the gold standard

On Friday afternoon, after the shocking Brexit referendum, while being interviewed by CNBC Alan Greenspan stunned his hosts when he said that things are about as bad as he has ever seen.
"This is the worst period, I recall since I've been in public service. There's nothing like it, including the crisis — remember October 19th, 1987, when the Dow went down by a record amount 23 percent? That I thought was the bottom of all potential problems. This has a corrosive effect that will not go away. I'd love to find something positive to say."
Strangely enough, he was not referring to the British exodus but to America's own economic troubles.

Today, Greenspan was on Bloomberg Surveillance where in an extensive, 30 minutes interview he was urged to give his take on the British referendum outcome. According to Greenspan, David Cameron miscalculated and made a "terrible mistake" in holding a referendum. That decision led to a "terrible outcome in all respects," Greenspan said. "It didn't have to happen." Greenspan then noted that as a result of Brexit, "we are in very early days a crisis which has got a way to go", and point to Scotland which he said will likely have another referendum on its own, predicting the vote would be successful, and Northern Ireland would "probably" go the same way.

French industrial giant Lafarge paid 'taxes' to Islamic State in Syria

The world's leading building materials company Lafarge paid taxes to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in 2013-2014 to continue operations in northern Syria, reports Le Monde.

The newspaper claims Lafarge's plant was located in Jalabiya in northern Syria, controlled by IS militants. The company had sought to continue the work as long as possible despite dangerous and unstable environment. Lafarge started working in Syria in 2010, a year before the civil war broke out.

Le Monde says Lafarge made a deal with IS and the terrorists allowed the French to operate on their territory. The company's trucks could pass through the checkpoints set by the IS, for example, the paper reports. Lafarge is the world leader in building materials and one of the biggest players in cement, aggregates and concrete businesses. The French cement producer was indirectly funding the jihadists for over a year before IS seized the site on September 19, 2014.

In February 2015, the area was taken by Kurdish YPG militia and is now used as a base for US, French and British special forces that support the Kurds in their fight against the jihadists, according to the media.
