Who needs whom? German minister dangles 'special relationship' bait in front of post-Brexit Britain

Germany could offer Britain an opportunity for a tailored post-Brexit 'special relationship' once the EU divorce is finalized, a senior politician has suggested.

German foreign affairs minister Michael Roth told Reuters on Tuesday that although Britain must not drag its feet on initiating an exit, it could be in line for special conditions given its long relationship with Europe.

"Until the end of the year should really be sufficient time to get organized and adjust to the new situation. We should not let too much time go by," he said.

However, he said Britain's former influence could lead to a special arrangement with the union going forwards.

"Given Britain's size, significance and its long membership of the European Union, there will probably be a special status which only bears limited comparison to that of countries that have never belonged to the European Union," he said.

The Department of Commerce is set to hand off the final vestiges of American control over the Internet to international authorities in less than two months, officials have confirmed.

The department will finalize the transition effective Oct. 1, Assistant Secretary Lawrence Strickling wrote on Tuesday, barring what he called "any significant impediment."

The move means the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which is responsible for interpreting numerical addresses on the Web to a readable language, will move from U.S. control to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a multistakeholder body based in Los Angeles that includes countries such as China and Russia.

Save the US or save the bankers: Your choice for president in November will be between competing factions of global financial elites

clinton dubya
Most experts would agree that Hillary Clinton represents the Democratic party, and Donald Trump, the Republican. But this approach is wrong.

Several years ago, I described in my articles and lectures a growing rift in the global elite. Pretty much united since 1945, in 2011 the elites split into two factions, mainly in reaction to dramatically falling profits at the top global banks following the 2008 financial crisis.

The global banks, which are the main instruments of global control by the financial elite (not the governments, as most people believe), are currently losing money, despite the fact that the dollar is being artificially supported.

By 2014, non-inflationary methods had been exhausted, forcing the Fed, under pressure from the Obama administration, which was worried about inflation, to stop printing dollars.

The global financial elite responded by trying to replace the Fed with a new, global Central Bank, a "Central Bank of Central Banks", thereby depriving the US of the ability to issue the world's reserve currency.

IDF raids refugee camp in West Bank, Palestinian teen killed, dozens injured in clashes

Israeli soldiers have killed one teenager in clashes with Palestinian youth at the Fawwar refugee camp, West Bank, also leaving dozens wounded. The IDF used live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets against the locals who hurled homemade explosives at the Israelis.

The IDF said its forces were on an operation "to uncover weaponry" in the camp and to damage the so-called terror infrastructure in the area. RT correspondent Paula Slier reported that at least three battalions were involved in the operation at the refugee camp next to Hebron, southern West Bank.

Israeli forces began raiding homes and interrogating suspects at dawn on Tuesday, making a number of arrests, when dozens of Palestinian youths attacked the troops.

Why Russia deployed its Tu-22M3 strategic bombers to Iran

Russia deployed Tupolev Tu-22M3 supersonic long-range strategic bombers to the Hamadan airfield in Iran to cut flight times, increase bomb capacity and improve response capabilities of its aircraft taking part in the operation to liberate Aleppo since the outcome of this battle could well determine the future of Syria.

The Tu-22M3 deployment "does not merely help to save time and fuel," Svobodnaya Pressa reported. "Missions launched from the Hamadan airfield allow Russian aircraft to significantly increase bomb capacity of each plane." They are estimated to be capable of carrying three times greater payload.

On August 15, an undisclosed number of the Tupolev Tu-22M3s and the Sukhoi Su-34s left the airfield in the Russian town of Mozdok located in the Republic of North Ossetia - Alania and landed at the Hamadan airfield in Iran.

Some have questioned why the Tu-22M3s bombers were not deployed to Hmeymim since the Russian airbase in Syria is closer to Aleppo then Hamadan. The reason is simple. The Tu-22M3s are too heavy to use the airstrip in Hmeymim. But the base played a major part in the latest counterterrorism offensive. The Su-30SM and Su-35S aircraft that provided cover for the Russian bombers deployed to Iran took off from the base in Syria.

New documents confirm the CIA censorship of Guantánamo Trials, hiding evidence of torture from public scrutiny

In January 2013, during the military trial of five men accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks, a defense lawyer was discussing a motion relating to the CIA's black-site program, when a mysterious entity cut the audio feed to the gallery. A red light began to glow and spin. Someone had triggered the courtroom's censorship system.

The system was believed to be under the control of the judge, Col. James Pohl. In this case, it wasn't.

"The 40-second delay was initiated, not by me," Pohl said. He was referring to the delayed audio feed, which normally broadcasts to the press and other observers seated in the gallery. The gallery is cut off from the courtroom by three layers of soundproof Plexiglas. "I'm curious as to why. ... If some external body is turning the commission off under their own view of what things ought to be, with no reasonable explanation, then we are going to have a little meeting about who turns that light on or off."

Later, Pohl said the censorship was the work of an "OCA," short for "Original Classification Authority." In the future, he said, no external body would be permitted to unilaterally censor what was happening in his courtroom.

Many have speculated that Pohl's "OCA" is in fact the CIA. That speculation is now confirmed with the release of three new documents by The Intercept. The documents show the evolution of secret rules governing what is and is not allowed to be discussed before the military court at Guantánamo.

All three of the declassified documents are marked "secret" and were distributed to defense attorneys and Pentagon-employed courtroom security officers. The documents clearly identify CIA as the OCA for torture-related information at the Guantánamo military commission proceedings.

Hamza Bin Laden, son of al-Qaeda founder and former leader Osama Bin Laden, has called for the overthrow of the Saudi government and an end to the US influence on Riyadh, a US-based extremism watchdog said on Wednesday.

Established in 2009, AQAP is a branch of the terror group al-Qaeda, active in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which is outlawed in many countries worldwide, including in Russia and the United States.

"Hamza bin Laden echoes father's call to overthrow Saudi regime, cut #US influence in country, & train w/ #AQAP [al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula]," Rita Katz, director of the SITE Intelligence Group, wrote on her Twitter account.

007 delusion: UK military power a delusion rooted in myth, not history

Daniel Craig

Britain ignores its dependence on stronger allies and the dilapidated state of its "clapped out" armed forces in favor of a deluded 007 self-image, which came to the fore during the Brexit referendum, according to a leading scholar.

Writing for the Democratic Audit UK website on Tuesday, University of Warwick academic Dr. Mike Finn gave a savage critique of the James Bond self-delusion which helped fuel the EU referendum 'Leave' campaign.

Brexit bluster

Finn argued the campaign led by the likes of Michael Gove and Boris Johnson - "who consider themselves to be historians of sorts, articulating Britain's place in the world in historical terms" - was based on contrived post-war ideas about "British pluck" and a myth of "specialism."

Their heady "visions of Britain's past" are "rooted in myth, not history, and this has implications for the decision they are asking us to take," Finn said.

"Standing alone has been the exception, rather than the norm. Apart from those heroic months in 1940 and early 1941, Britain has faced the world - in war and peace - with allies."

Hackers take down NSA website in connection with obtaining government spying and surveillance tools

nsa website
A statement by the 'Shadow Brokers' hacking collective, claiming they have hacked an NSA affiliate and obtained a set of US government spying and surveillance tools, coincided with the NSA official website going offline for many hours.

The website of the US National Security Agency (NSA) went offline at about 10:54pm Monday and remained inaccessible for almost a full day, until about 5pm Tuesday, reports Politico.

All links to the NSA homepage, including the main page, led to a 'Service Unavailable' error window for some 18 hours. The 'What's New' section remained the only operable page, probably because it is hosted on a separate server.

Politico quoted an unnamed FedScoop source, claiming that the outage was made by the NSA itself, maintaining an "internal review" of its online presence.

Unprovoked attack: Israeli soldiers toss smoke grenade at Palestinians

Israeli troops are under investigation after footage emerged of soldiers throwing a smoke grenade at a group of young Palestinian men sitting outside a shop in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

The security camera footage, which was released by Palestinian news outlet Ramallah News on Tuesday, shows a military jeep pulling up beside the group of civilians.

In a matter of seconds, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) vehicle pulls away from the men and before it goes out of frame, an object is thrown at the Palestinians in an unprovoked attack.

The civilians panic and knock over chairs as they run to escape before the grenade explodes into a burst of light and smoke.
