DuPont & Dow chemical merger: Bad deal for people and the planet

Seed giants
© Desmanthus4food/Wikimedia/cc"Just a handful of large chemical companies including Dow and DuPont already control most of the seed supply used to grow crops like corn and soybeans, as well as the herbicides that genetically engineered seeds are designed to be grown with," said Wenonah Hauter of Food & Water Watch.
Groups are calling on the Department of Justice to reject the deal to protect food supply

Watchdog groups are sounding the alarm after two of the oldest and largest corporations in the United States—DuPont and Dow Chemical—announced Friday plans to merge into a $130 billion giant, thereby establishing the world's biggest seed and pesticide conglomerate.

Wallander: Upcoming US/Russia talks may opportune an agreement on Assad's future

Lavrov,Putin,Kerry
© AFPRussian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are due to hold talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Moscow next week.
A senior American official says the US and Russia would likely reach an agreement on a political transition for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a next week meeting in Moscow. Celeste Wallander, National Security Council's senior director for Russia and Eurasia, said the "political process that's underway" in Syria would primarily be discussed between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

According to the State Department, Kerry will visit Moscow on December 15 to meet with Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We wouldn't be having these negotiations if we didn't think that there was a possibility that Russia's position is evolving such that we could agree," Wallander said on Friday. "I don't know that the positions have come closer, but it's clear that there could be an agreement on a transition that meets US and coalition requirements that Assad not be part of Syria's leadership, and those are the discussions that are under intensive focus right now," she added.

Comment: Where is the 'pinpoint?' In the balance may be the future of the world, as in WWIII or de-escalation; who "wins" or "loses;" who is willing to set ego and agenda aside for humanity-at-large; who is willing to risk all for a self-serving outcome. Then again, this might just be more posturing and kicking the can down the proverbial road, hoping the opponent will reveal a weakness. More likely it is a 'pinprick,' a manipulative Western mind-game message to Syria that Russia may sell out Assad. (Nah! Unlikely Mr. Putin will play and lose at the US game of "chicken.")

Houthis: Yemen ceasefire to begin December 14

Houthi

Yemen's Houthi Ansarullah movement says a ceasefire is to take effect in the country on December 14, ahead of the UN-brokered peace talks.
"Based on what has been agreed upon, there will be a halt to the aggression on the 14th of this month," Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul Salam said on Saturday, referring to the deadly Saudi campaign against Yemen.
The Ansarullah official, who was briefing journalists in the capital, Sana'a, said the Houthis and their allies are determined to attend the December 15 negotiations in Switzerland to press for the demands of the Yemeni nation in talks with representatives of the fugitive former president of Yemen, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is a staunch ally of the regime in Riyadh.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said on December 7 that both the Houthis and the supporters of Hadi have agreed to attend the talks in Switzerland in a bid to end the Saudi-imposed war. Sources in Hadi's office have confirmed that Riyadh would halt the deadly airstrikes against Yemen before the opening of the UN talks.

On March 26, the Saudi military launched its campaign in an attempt to undermine the Houthis and bring Hadi back to power. More than 7,500 people have been killed and over 14,000 others injured ever since.

Comment: The Houthi rebellion in 2004 led to an insurgency in Yemen against President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Houthi participated in the 2011 Yemeni Revolution and took over the capital in Sana'a in 2015, leading to the removal of the Hadi government.

What seems to be clear is that the Houthi insurgency is an indigenous movement with widespread support in Yemen. The war crimes that are being reported in Yemen are on the side of the US backed Saudi coalition, who have bombed schools, hospitals and civilian infrastructure on a large scale. ISIS and Al-qaeda are interestingly also against the Houthis and thus on the side of the Saudis. No real surprises there.

Bomb attack Iraq-Saudi frontier border post, kills six border guards, 14 casualties

A bomb attack has targeted an Iraqi border post on the frontier with Saudi Arabia, claiming the lives of six guards and leaving another 14 injured. Officials said the casualties came after a bomber detonated an explosives-rigged vehicle at the headquarters of the Hafr Zawiyah border post in Iraq's restive Western Anbar Province on Saturday.

An Iraqi army lieutenant colonel, whose name was not released in reports, said the bomber was dressed in a military uniform and was driving an explosives-laden military vehicle. The officer said Hussein al-Goli, a lieutenant colonel, was among those who lost their lives in the Saturday incident. Imad Ahmed, an official responsible for Anbar's Ar-Rutba district, also confirmed the death toll.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack so far, but such assaults are usually blamed on the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh elements began an offensive through the Iraqi territory in June 2014. Daesh militants have been accused of committing gross human rights violations and war crimes in areas they control, particularly in Iraq, Syria and Libya.

Comment: Likely not the first nor the last of deadly border spats as Iraq reclaims its sovereignty and pushes out the opposition, including the Turks and Takfiri Daesh.

At least 15 dead and dozens injured in terror attack near hospital in Homs, Syria

At least 15 people have been killed and dozens injured after a car presumably packed with 150 kg of explosives exploded near a hospital in central Homs in western Syria, AFP reports citing authorities.

The incident happened near a hospital in the al-Zahra neighborhood of the city. The area has seen several bombings, as it's home to the Alawite minority, to whom the ruling elite in Syria belongs.

Syrian state television described the attack as "two large terrorist explosions". The second explosion reportedly took place in a nearby shop a few minutes after the car bombing detonated.

SANA's first report said at least 8 people were killed and 25 injured. Later the state news agency was talking of "dozens civilian casualties."

Comment: Someone doesn't want a ceasefire in Homs. What is with this targeting hospitals anyway? It's a cowardly act but does generate a lot of fear. That's the point.

US Navy's newest warship breaks down 20 days after commissioning

The US Navy's brand new littoral combat ship, the Milwaukee, broke down on Friday and had to be towed for emergency repair just three weeks after commissioning. The warship's troubles came after several days of propulsion system problems.

The USS Milwaukee was traveling from Halifax, Canada to Mayport, Florida, on its way to its homeport in San Diego when it suffered an engineering failure, the Navy Times reported.

The salvage ship Grapple towed it more than 40 nautical miles to the Joint Expeditionary Base in Little Creek, Virginia, where the cause of the failure will be traced and repairs carried out.

Comment: Looks like the ginormous US military budget is having trouble creating reliable modern war machines.

Syria will not negotiate with foreign terrorists: Only national & patriotic opposition, says Assad

Assad, Bashar al-Assad

Syria will not negotiate with terrorists to end the conflict on their terms, no matter how hard the West tries to present armed gangs as grassroots political opposition, the country's President Bashar Assad told Spanish News Agency EFE.

The problem, Assad says, lies with the fact that large portion of armed fighters and terror gangs in Syria are foreign mercenaries, which the US and their allies in the Gulf region are craving to include in the negotiation process.

"Opposition is a political term, not a military term. So, talking about the concept is different from the practice, because so far, we've been seeing that some countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United States, and some western countries wanted the terrorist groups to join these negotiations. They want the Syrian government to negotiate with the terrorists, something I don't think anyone would accept in any country," Assad told EFE.

At the same time, Assad once again reiterated that his government is always open for negotiations with the real opposition - but emphasized that opposition must be defined. "Opposition, for everyone in this world, doesn't mean militant," Assad stressed. He said that Damascus is already engaged in dialogue with certain armed "groups, not organizations", so they would lay down their arms in exchange for "amnesty from the government" and a chance to return to "normal life."

"This is the only way to deal with the militants in Syria. Whenever they want to change their approach, give up the armaments, we are ready, while to deal with them as a political entity, this is something we completely refuse," Assad clarifies. An agreement on a peaceful resolution to the crisis, according to Assad, can only be reached with the "real, patriotic, national opposition" that has grassroots in and related to Syria, "not to any other state or regime in the world."

Comment: Assad says he will not leave Syria under any circumstances unless the Syrian people want him out:
"I never thought about leaving Syria under any circumstances, in any situation, something I never put in my mind, like the Americans say "plan B" or "plan C." Actually, no," Assad said, as quoted by the EFE news agency.

However, the president added that if the majority of the Syrian population wanted him to leave his post, he would have done it "the same day."

Best of the Web: 'Turkey behaves like ISIS ally, should not be EU member', says Czech president Milos Zeman

Milos Zeman
© Petr Josek / ReutersCzech President Milos Zeman.
Turkey should not become an EU member, said Czech President Milos Zeman, adding that Ankara sometimes behaves like an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) ally, even though Turkey is part of NATO. "I think Turkey is indeed a member of NATO, but sometimes behaves as if it's more an ally of Islamic State. It removes oil from Syria which finances Islamic State," Zeman said, as quoted by Czech newspaper Parlamentni Listy.

The president's remarks came on Tuesday while addressing voters at the end of a three-day visit to the Czech town of Kadan, North Bohemia, local media reported. Zeman suggested Turkish policy stems from the principle "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," referring to Turkey's suppression of the Kurds, "who are the only ones who have fought effectively with Islamic State," the newspaper reported.

The president maintained this is the reason why Turkey should be approached with caution and has no reason to be an EU member. President Zeman also dismissed the EU's intention to pay €3 billion (US$ 3.28 billion) to Ankara in order to better cater for the needs of 2.2 million Syrian refugees in the country. "The Roman Empire, before it collapsed, also paid tribute money to barbarians for them not to pilfer its territory. Turkey, on its part, is able to accept these refugees not only because they make up a mere fraction of its overall population, but also because they share the same religion [with Turks]," he said.

He added that he does not see "danger in Islam as such" but in "transferring these [Muslim] habits to Europe."In November, Turkey signed an agreement with the EU at a summit in Brussels in which the country will help stem the flow of migrants to Europe in return for €3 billion in support and the re-establishing of talks on EU accession.

Best of the Web: Pepe Escobar: Crippled in Syria, Turkey goes for a 'Sunnistan' in Iraq

Turkey's "incursion" into Iraq is a cold, calculated move. And once again, the name of the game is - what else? - Divide and Rule.

Turkey sent to Iraqi Kurdistan - which is part of the state of Iraq - no less than a 400-strong battalion supported by 25 M-60A3 tanks. Now the Turkish boots on the ground at Bashiqa camp, northeast of Mosul, have reportedly reached a total of around 600.

The short breakdown: this is not a "training camp"- as Ankara is spinning. It's a full-blown, perhaps permanent, military base.

The dodgy deal was struck between the ultra-corrupt Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and then-Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu in Erbil last month.

Torrents of Turkish spin swear this is only about "training" Peshmergas to fight ISIS/ISIL/Daesh.

Absolute nonsense. The crucial fact is that Ankara is terrified of the "4+1" alliance fighting Islamic State, which unites Iran, Iraqi Shiites and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), as well as Hezbollah, with Russia.

In Syria, Ankara is virtually paralyzed, after the "stab in the back" downing of the Su-24; the Russian revelations of complicity between Turkey's first family and stolen Syrian oil (Bilal Erdogan, a.k.a. Erdogan 'Mini Me', denies everything); and the Russian Air Force relentless pounding of Turkey's fifth column Turkmen. Not to mention the deployment of S-400s and even a third-generation submarine complete with Kalibr cruise missiles.

So Ankara now switches the attention to Iraq with a "counter-alliance", made up of Turkey; the KRG (which - illegally - sells oil to Turkey); and Sunnis in northern Iraq under the supposed leadership of the sprawling Nuceyfi tribe in Mosul.

The United States and the European Union agreed to further intensify work on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) free trade deal in 2016 during talks in Brussels, according to a joint US-EU statement issued on Friday.

US Trade Representative Michael Froman and European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom released the statement following the talks.

"At our meeting today, we agreed to further intensify our work during 2016 to help negotiations move forward rapidly, including through enhanced intersessional work, frequent formal negotiating rounds, and increased Minister level consultations," the statement said.
