British MPs chastise government silence on drone strike legality

Reyaad Khan

MPs in the House of Commons have said the British Government's response to serious legal, ethical and moral questions over the use of targeted drone strikes is "simply not good enough" and that "some important questions about human rights law that remain unanswered."

The issue came to public prominence when, on 21 August 2015, Reyaad Khan, a 21-year-old British citizen from Cardiff, Wales, was killed by an RAF drone strike in Raqqa, Syria. He had appeared in a recruitment video for ISIL/Daesh and was suspected of being involved in plotting and directing terrorist attacks in the UK and elsewhere.

The issue of deployment of force is a thorny one for the UK, because — although the government has the right to deploy troops without parliament's consent — recent convention says that parliament is given the opportunity to debate and approve or dismiss the deployment.

Comment: By stating the rules of engagement, the government/military would then have to follow them. Without rules, you can't be accused of breaking them.

Brexit botchery? PM May reverses giving MPs vote amidst squabbles with chancellor

Theresa May faced a stormy Prime Minister's Questions in Parliament on Wednesday as her own MPs turned on her over the state of Brexit negotiations. Tory backbencher Ken Clarke criticized the PM for her "reluctance to present even broad plans because of worries it might weaken her Government's negotiating position."

Yet, the long standing MP added, "One or more Brexiteer members of her cabinet have been briefing the newspapers copiously on every proposal being put forward on papers to the relevant cabinet committee... and launching political attacks on their cabinet colleagues who seem to disagree with them."

As he demanded an end to government infighting, Clarke echoed the comments from his colleagues over the last few weeks and called for "Parliament scrutiny" of the Brexit strategy. May's team mentioned on Tuesday evening that it was "highly likely" Parliament would be given a vote on any agreement made between Brussels and Downing Street.

Comment: Hard Brexit: Britain withdrawing entirely from Europe's single market in order to be able to impose strict immigration controls. Soft Brexit: Britain would be out of the EU but would retain strong economic ties and allow free movement of people.

Commenting on the ongoing assault on the Iraqi city of Mosul, which is currently under occupation by Daesh, former Turkish diplomat and politician from the main oppositional Republican People's Party (CHP) Öztürk Yılmazm told Sputnik Turkiye that Ankara in fact has been left out of the operation.

"It should be mentioned in the first place that the recently launched operation to liberate Mosul has demonstrated that Turkey, despite all the rumors and suggestions, has been left on the sidelines of the offensive, and Ankara understands it only too well," said Öztürk Yılmazm deputy chairman of Turkey's main oppositional Republican People's Party (CHP). In 2013, Yılmazm was appointed as the Consul General of Turkey to Mosul. He was taken hostage in June 2014 and held for 101 days along with 48 other diplomats after Daesh militants took over the city, being released under undisclosed circumstances by the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MİT) on 20 September 2014.

With just hours to go before the final US presidential debate, Hillary Clinton's camp has again decided to play the Russian card. But this time it's not only Moscow that's behind the leak of DNC and Podesta emails - somehow RT is also involved, Clinton's team claims.

Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri assured the Washington Post that the Democratic candidate is fully focused on preparing to debate with Donald Trump, and is not at all concerned by the emails recently released by WikiLeaks in huge batches on a daily basis.

Erdogan claims Mosul as Turkish, evidenced in 20th Century document

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan invoked on Monday an early 20th-century irredentist document that claimed the Iraqi city of Mosul as Turkish soil. Erdogan's remarks came amid the commencement of a long-anticipated operation by the Iraqi Army, Kurdistan's Peshmerga Forces and the US-led Coalition to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State (IS).

In Mosul "a history lies for us. If the gentlemen desire so, let them read the Misak-i Milli (National Oath) and understand what the place means to us," Erdogan declared. The Turkish president referred to an Ottoman Parliament-sealed, 1920 pact that designates Kirkuk and Mosul as parts of Turkey. Erdogan was speaking to the International Law Congress in Istanbul, according to the Kurdistan24 bureau there.

The Turkish President vowed his country would join both the Mosul operation that began in the morning and any talks regarding the Iraqi city's fate in the aftermath of its capture from IS.

Moscow will find response measures that would be "painful" for Washington if the US decides to continue toughening its sanctions against Russia, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Russian MPs.

"If the US opts to further toughen sanctions in defiance of common sense and in disregard of its experience that has already been quite painful for them, then we will find measures in our toolbox that will have a painful impact, particularly in terms of America's positioning in the world," Ryabkov told the deputies of the Russian State Duma, ahead of a vote on a bill suspending the Russian-American deal on reprocessing weapons-grade plutonium.

The Russian deputy foreign minister also said that the US continues to issue threats "on a daily basis" concerning the imposition of new sanctions against Russia "under various pretexts." He added that 281 Russian legal entities and 81 officials, including a number of high-ranking figures, are now on the US sanctions list.

New emails: Abedin concerned Killary needs podium, 'cannot walk around' -- in 2009

hillary clinton
In 2009, Abedin said Clinton would object to speaking with crowd on both sides or without podium

Emails obtained by Citizens United through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and released on Tuesday suggest that walking around a stage may have been a challenging burden for Hillary Clinton as early as 2009.

In a 2009 email exchange between top Clinton aide Huma Abedin and Clinton Global Initiative employees Amitabh Desai and Ed Hughes, Abedin revealed that Clinton could not walk around the stage like her husband Bill Clinton and would need a podium for an upcoming address.

"Just want to make sure someone has coordinated with you on hrc speech set up," Abedin wrote. "She won't be able to give it in the round like [Bill Clinton] does walking around with microphone," she explained. "Are we able to set it up so shes speaking at a podium [sic]?"

Good luck with that! Ukraine's gas monopoly, Naftgaz, will demand $2.6bn from Russia for Crimean "assets"

© Valentyn Ogirenko / Reuters A man walks past the headquarters of the Ukrainian national joint stock company NaftoGaz in central Kiev, Ukraine.
Ukraine's national oil and gas company Naftogaz and its six subsidiaries are planning to sue Russia for the loss of assets in the Crimea, according to a statement released by the group.

"Naftogaz has preliminarily estimated the damage to the group at $2.6 billion," the company says, stressing that the claim includes property of Naftogaz, Chornomornaftogaz, Ukrtransgaz, Ukrgazvydobuvannia, Ukrtransnafta, Gaz Ukrainy and Likvo. Naftogaz claims the seizure of Crimean energy assets owned by the group violates the bilateral agreement on promotion and mutual protection of investments, signed by the two governments.

"After the illegal invasion of Crimea and the occupation of the peninsula in 2014, the Russian Federation applied an ambitious and well-coordinated scheme of depriving Ukrainian companies of their property without paying compensation," the company says.

In March, Naftogaz said it was planning to sue Russia over the Crimean assets, and that it would seek international investment arbitration.

Earlier this year, Naftogaz announced the start of compensation negotiations over the nationalizing of Chornomornaftogaz and Ukrtransgaz, which formed one enterprise after Crimea held a referendum to join Russia two years ago.

On March 16, 2014, the referendum asked the people of Crimea whether they wanted to join Russia, or if they wanted to restore the 1992 Crimean constitution and Crimea's status as a part of Ukraine. The referendum took place five days after the Crimean government declared the independence of the Republic of Crimea. The vast majority voted in favor of Crimea seceding from Ukraine and rejoining Russia.

Comment: Pretty rich of Naftogaz considering its core infrastructure would not have existed without funding from the Soviet Union. Not to mention that Ukraine owes Russia over $3 billion plus interest in loans.

Moscow: Interest on Ukraine's $3B overdue debt is $683,333 per day

Former UK foreign secretary Straw admits Iraq invasion caused rise of ISIS

Former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has admitted the 2003 invasion of Iraq played a hand in destabilizing the country and laid the groundwork for sectarian violence and the rise of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

"I have a very heavy sense of responsibility because I was one of the senior ministers who made or recommended that decision [to invade Iraq] to the House of Commons," he said in an interview with Sky News.

Straw, who had also served as home secretary in the late 1990s, stressed he had made the recommendation to go to war in good faith, believing there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

"Had we known then that there was no known WMD there, there would have been no justification for it," he said.

Obama: Vote rigging is impossible so long as it's in favor of Hillary Clinton

Voter fraud
© therealside.com
Is rigging the U.S. election possible?

Obama says it is not possible:
Obama was asked about Trump's voter fraud assertions on Tuesday [..] He responded with a blistering attack on the Republican candidate, noting that U.S. elections are run and monitored by local officials, who may well be appointed by Republican governors of states, and saying that cases of significant voter fraud were not to be found in American elections.

Obama said there was "no serious" person who would suggest it was possible to rig American elections, adding, "I'd invite Mr. Trump to stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes."
That is curious. There are a lot of "non serious" persons in the Democratic Party who tell us that Russia is trying to manipulate the U.S. elections. How is it going to do that when it's not possible? Moreover - Obama himself suggested that Russia may interfere with the U.S. elections: Obama: 'Possible' Russia interfering in US election

Is rigging the election only impossible when it is in favor of Hillary Clinton? This while rigging the elections in favor of Donald Trump, by Russia or someone else, is entirely possible and even "evident"?
