Airstrikes should be suspended and all parties should get back to the negotiating table in a bid to end the Syrian war, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said.

Corbyn told the BBC Monday that he supported an end to the UK's airstrikes in the war-ravaged country, and said that it was in the interests of all parties to return to the negotiating table.

"I would say to President Trump 'listen, it's in nobody's interests for this war to continue. Let's get the Geneva process going quickly," he told the interviewer.

"In the meantime, no more strikes. Have the UN investigation into the war crime of the use of chemical weapons in Syria and take it on from there."

"I want us to say 'listen, let's get people around the table quickly.' A way of achieving that - suspend the strikes? Possibly. The point has to be to bring about a political solution."

Afghanistan's defense minister and army chief of staff have resigned following a deadly Taliban attack on a military base in the north of the country. The resignations come just ahead of a visit by US Defense Secretary James Mattis.

"Defense Minister Abdullah Habibi and Army Chief of Staff Qadam Shah Shahim stepped down with immediate effect," the presidential palace tweeted on Monday. The resignations have already received the approval of President Ashraf Ghani, according to another tweet.

A separate announcement added that six more commanders from the 209th, 207th, 205th, and 203rd Corps had stepped down.

The Chinese president called for all sides to exercise restraint during a phone call with US leader Donald Trump on the issue of Pyongyang. It came as North Korean state media warned the US of "catastrophic consequences" of its deployment of the USS Carl Vinson.

President Xi Jinping told Trump during the call that China strongly opposes North Korea's nuclear weapons program, according to CCTV.

He also said that Beijing opposes any actions that run counter to UN Security Council resolutions, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, as cited by Reuters.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has cut short the final leg of his Asia trip to race back to Washington, where the Trump administration faces a critical week on tax reform and a funding plan to keep the government running, an aide said on Sunday.

Pence, who has been traveling in Asia to reassure allies and partners about President Donald Trump's commitment to the region, had originally planned to spend two nights in Honolulu at the end of a trip that took him to South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

While he spoke with business leaders in each country, Pence's trip was overshadowed by rising tensions in North Korea, where it is feared another nuclear test could be conducted soon in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

Duterte warns Islamist radicals that he's '50 times more brutal than terrorists'

The Philippines' tough-talking president, Rodrigo Duterte, appears eager to maintain his reputation, as he warned Islamist extremists he could be "50 times" more brutal than those beheading people and go as far as to eat the terrorists' internal organs.

Duterte, who was speaking Sunday during the opening of a national sports tournament, was referring to the recently foiled terrorist plot in the country which three Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL) affiliates were preparing. Several soldiers and civilians, and at least four militants, including a senior commander of an Islamist extremist group were killed in the Tuesday operation in the central province of Bohol, a popular tourist destination, before they could carry out a kidnapping and bombing plot.

Duterte gave orders to kill fleeing IS-linked militants involved in the foiled attack, calling them "animals" and threatening to brutally retaliate to the extremist groups.

Civilian deaths in US strikes in Syria & Iraq are 'greatest catastrophe since WWII'

It's a nightmare: civilian deaths in Syria and Iraq in the ongoing war against Daesh are rising faster than local officials, and remote military intelligence gathering, can count, and the US-led coalition seems unwilling to do anything about it.

Prompting international outcry and repudiation, the ongoing warfare in Syria and Iraq has claimed so many innocent lives, and displaced so many people, that the UN now names it the greatest humanitarian catastrophe since World War II, and no end is in sight.

With long-term military investment in the region, the West appears in no hurry to stop the carnage, as deploying its military to faraway lands allows Washington and its allies to develop any number of deadly new technologies without endangering its own citizens back home.

Suspected Taliban insurgents set off a car bomb at a US-operated base in Afghanistan, according to officials. It occurred shortly after US Defense Secretary James Mattis arrived in the country.

The attackers detonated the car bomb at an entrance to Camp Chapman, a secretive facility manned by US forces and private military contractors, said Mubarez Mohammad Zadran, a spokesman for the provincial governor, as cited by Reuters.

Photos on social media showed a plume of smoke rising from the scene of the attack in the eastern province of Khost.

"I am aware of a car bomb attack at one of the gates in the US base, but we are not allowed there to get more details," Zadran said.

Saudi king's son who 'bombed ISIS and Yemen' named as ambassador to US

Saudi Arabia's King Salman has appointed his son, Prince Khaled bin Salman, as the country's ambassador to the US, in a move said to point to strengthening ties to President Donald Trump.

Prince Khaled is an Air Force pilot who has taken part in operations in Yemen and against ISIS, AP reports. The prince, who studied military aviation in the US and briefly attended both Harvard University and Georgetown, has been working as an adviser at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington since last year.

Khaled's position will allow Trump a direct line to the Saudi monarchy, further signalling warmer relations between the two powers after a cooling following the Obama administration's nuclear agreement with regional rival Iran.

Former Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon confirms Israel's collaboration with ISIS in Syria

Moshe Yaalon
Former Defense Minister of Israel Moshe "Bogie" Ya'alon just blew it.
In the midst of complaining about the Islamist threat to Israel and the world, Bibi Netanyahu conveniently forgets that his own country enjoys a tacit alliance with ISIS in Syria. It is an alliance of convenience to be sure and one that's not boasted about by either party. But is not terribly different from one than Israel enjoys with its other Muslim allies like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States.

Bogie Yaalon served as defence minister in the current government till he had a falling out with Netanyahu. Now Yaalon plans to form his own party and run against his former boss. Unfortunately for him, he's not polling well and doesn't appear to be much of a political threat.

So Yaalon enjoys the position of having little to lose. He can speak more candidly than the average politician. In this context, he spoke at length on security matters at a public event in Afula. There is always much that I disagree with whenever I read Yaalon's views. For example, while warning about the danger of favoring too heavily one side over the other, he essentially justifies Israel's interventionist approach, which largely has favored Assad's opponents. Nor do I like his choice of political allies - from Pam Geller to Meir Kahane's grandson.

Comment: Assuming this is all true (and there's no reason to really think otherwise), one may feel compelled to ask: When does ISIS ever apologize to anyone about anything ?! A person or party doesn't usually apologize to another unless they hold a certain amount of respect or regard for the other party. This certainly would explain why one of the most vile terrorist organizations in history has never touched Israel - only a stone's throw away from Syria.
