Comparing Trump to Hitler a 'sad testament to American educational system'

Comparing Donald Trump to Hitler shows the ignorance and decay in the US educational system, to the point where we may be forced to repeat the mistakes of the past, says political analyst Charles Ortel.

Hitler analogies in US politics have become something of a trend this year. The latest victim was Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, for suggesting the US should work with Russia in Syria.

Political analyst Charles Ortel told RT the allegations against Trump are being used as a distraction.

RT: The Hitler card's often played against Trump, but now anti-Trump protesters seem to have fallen into their own trap. Do you think Hitler comparisons have been turned into a weapon in the US political debate?

Charles Ortel: For those of us who know something about the history of WWII and the run-up to WWII and Hitler himself, this is really proof-positive America's educational system is not as far advanced as one might hope. To even dare compare Donald Trump to Hitler just proves the ignorance of people who make those assertions. And not to recognize some of the comments that came from Hitler himself and to applaud them when you are supposedly anti-Trump, again shows your ignorance. It is really a sad testament to what has happened with our educational system here in America since 1970. We don't study the past, and it seems like we may be close to dooming ourselves by repeating the mistakes of the past.

Pepe Escobar: The Korean Matrix

South Korea wants to talk to North Korea.

The Defense Ministry in Seoul proposed to talk at the border village of Panmunjom, while the Red Cross proposed separate talks to discuss family reunions.

So South Korean President Moon Jae-in has made up his mind — after his inauguration on May 10 and Pyongyang's ICBM test on July 3.

Pyongyang may also be inclined to talk — as it had already indicated. But there may be preconditions, as in the suspension of those provocative, annual US-South Korean military drills. The US will say no. Once again, it's all about Washington.

It's unclear whether US intelligence has 100% proof that Pyongyang, apart from the ICBM, is on the path to soon achieve other technological breaks, such as building a guidance system and a miniaturized, functional nuclear weapon capable of surviving both the missile launch and re-entry into the atmosphere.

Saudi Arabia had hammered out plans for an aggressive attack against Qatar, which it considered its only option; a Bahraini expert told Sputnik why this scenario was never implemented.

Late last week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian started his two-day visit to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

He is due to hear the positions of the states on the ongoing diplomatic row around Qatar as well as to offer France's contribution to the mediation efforts led by Kuwait, according to the French Foreign Ministry.

Libya's Sarraj warns against 'liberation of Tripoli', wants dialogue with rivals, calls for elections in March 2018

The prime minister of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Sarraj, has outlined his views on the situation in the war-torn country and the ways to resolve the crisis in an interview with Sputnik.

Statements by representatives of the Libyan National Army (LNA), which controls the east of the country, about the forthcoming "liberation of Tripoli" are unacceptable, Sarraj told Sputnik.

"Firstly, Tripoli is not occupied for someone to liberate it. It is necessary to refrain from provocative statements in the media, so as not to complicate the problems. Taking advantage of our meeting today, I urge all parties to refrain from expressions such as the 'liberation of Tripoli,'" Sarraj said.

Comment: Depends on your point of view. If the Libyan people don't recognize the UN mandated GNA government, then yes, Tripoli is occupied by foreigners.

Comment: Sarraj must be worried about Gaddafi: Leader Of Libyan Unity Government Calls For March 2016 Presidential, Parliamentary Vote
The head of Libya's UN-supported government has announced parliamentary and presidential elections to be held in March 2018.

Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), said in a July 16 televised speech that the new president and parliament would have a mandate of "three years maximum, or until the drafting and organization of a referendum for a constitution."

He also called for a national ceasefire and the eventual combining of rival parliamentary bodies based in Tripoli and eastern Libya.

He said he was calling for the elections because of his "determination to escape the current crisis and unify Libyans."

"I am confident that the national spirit will overcome the narrow personal interests, and invite everyone to offer compromise even if it's painful to do so," he said.

SOTT Focus: Behind the Headlines: Trump Jr. Meeting Prompts Full-Scale Meltdown: Russia!

Trump Jr. and Trump Sr.

The big news this week - just like every other week - is all about Trump. But this time it's Trump Jr. A year ago a shady British publicist set up a meeting between the junior Donald and a Russian. Now that the whole world knows about it, people are freaking out. Meeting with Russians is bad.

Unfortunately for the Russia-baiters, this latest scandal is the same as all the previous ones. As the story grows with every telling, its substance diminishes with equal rapidity. The meeting was a waste of time. There was no Russian collusion. And the hyper-focus on what the anti-Trumpers desperately want to be there - but which cannot be found - only exposes their own hypocrisy and double standards.

It was the Clintonista crew that top to bottom invented the 'dodgy dossier' on Trump, and Hillary's DNC actually colluded with Ukraine's illegitimate "government" to help undermine Trump. If that isn't bad enough, Bill Clinton's former political operatives Michael Caputo and Dick Morris are coming out to plainly admit that they were tasked to help Boris Yeltsin get re-elected as Russian President in the 90s. A big win for team USA - and a disaster for Russia. Now, these stories would make great burgers (with all the toppings!) if the corporate media served up a semblance of objectivity.

Tune in Sunday, July 16, to Behind the Headlines, 4-6pm UTC (6-8pm CET, 12-2pm EST) as we take a look at this latest anti-Russian nothing-burger, and what the real story is that everyone is missing.

Prepared to move? Merkel rules out pre-conditions for German MPs to visit troops in Turkey

Berlin's right to visit German troops at a NATO Konya airbase in Turkey is non-negotiable, says Chancellor Angela Merkel, adding she will "flatly" deny any pre-conditions.

Merkel was commenting on a recent Turkish decision to bar German MPs from inspecting its soldiers at the NATO airbase in Konya when speaking to ARD broadcaster in a comprehensive interview on Sunday.

She called Ankara's move "awkward" and insisted the lawmakers should be allowed to visit the base, stressing that Berlin will not discuss any preconditions.

"If there will be any, we would flatly reject them," she stressed, as cited by Die Zeit.

Britain's £150bn F-35 fighter jets are 'appallingly bad'

Britain will press ahead with a £150 billion (US$196 billion) deal to buy 138 flawed F-35 fighter jets despite serious concerns over virtually every aspect of their capability, according to an aviation analyst.

The warplanes, which will operate from Britain's new Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, have been touted as a keystone of future of UK air and maritime power.

Yet according to aviation expert Pierre Sprey, the aircraft are beset with an "unbelievably abnormal" number of issues.

These include on-board computers which may be vulnerable to cyberattack and issues with interoperability between the planes and the ships they coordinate with.

While the F-35 has a powerful ability to transmit data to ships without being detected, Sprey warned that the UK's warships lack the capacity to receive it.

Chinese economy beats expectations, growing almost 7% last quarter

China's growth domestic product (GDP) in the second-quarter rose 6.9 percent, well above Beijing's 6.5 percent target for the year. The stronger-than-expected growth came as a result of industrial output and consumption picking up and higher investment.

The rate was the same as in the first three months of this year, said the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday.

"Overall, the economy continued to show steady progress in the first half...but international instability and uncertainties are still relatively large, and the domestic long-term buildup of structural imbalances remains," the statistics bureau said.

According to the bureau, industrial output rose 7.6 percent in June from a year earlier, compared with an estimated 6.5 percent. Retail sales were also well ahead of expectations, up 11 percent compared with June 2016.

Growth in both exports and imports was also higher than expected.

Seoul proposes 'rare' military talks with Pyongyang to 'ease tensions' on peninsula

Seoul has proposed rare military talks to North Korea for as early as this week, saying that the negotiations may "ease tensions" and establish long-awaited peace on the Korean Peninsula, where the states are technically still at war with each other.

"Talks and cooperation between the two Koreas to ease tension and bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula will be instrumental for pushing forth a mutual, virtuous cycle for inter-Korea relations and North Korea's nuclear problem," the South's Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said at a news briefing on Monday, as cited by Reuters.

Seoul "has no hostile policy toward North Korea," according to the South's unification minister.

"...As [President Moon Jae-in] clearly stated in his Berlin doctrine that he will never pursue the collapse of North Korea and an absorption-based reunification," Cho said in a statement, as cited by Yonhap.
