US Attorney-General Jeff Sessions has said that current opioid crisis is one of the top "lethal issues" in the country, as last year America faced record drug death toll. The crisis also kills and hurts kids, while some are born dependent on drugs.

Speaking at the conference of National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children on Tuesday, Sessions said that about "60,000 Americans lost their lives to drug overdoses" in 2016. In previous year the death toll was 52,000, according to Sessions, and this year showed "a big increase."

"That will be the highest drug death toll and the fastest increase in that death toll in American history," Session stated, adding that "this is not a sustainable trend nor an acceptable America."

Brad Sherman: 'I can only imagine what Trump would do if he thought there was absolutely no risk of impeachment'

From The LA Times:

Israel dismayed that 'Assad will control pretty much all of Syria by late 2018'

Syrian soldiers
Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom said the Israeli security and intelligence agencies have come to conclusion that the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and his allies will control pretty much all of the Syrian territory by the end of 2018.

The newspaper pointed out the new narrative on the Syrian issue had to be adopted due to series of "unforeseen" turns of events, namely the cessation of US aid to the so-called "moderate rebels" in Syria, the general lack of American attention to what was actually happening on the ground, in addition to cessation of support to the so-called "moderate rebels" by Arab regimes, and of course an overwhelming Iranian support for the Syrian President and his government.

It is noteworthy that until recently, the Israeli security and intelligence agencies were firmly convinced that Syria will in no way return to what was before the war broke out back in 2011.

Overdue recognition? US Air Force finally admits to operating a base in the UAE

One of most highly trafficked runways for US warplanes in the Middle East and the only foreign military base with F-22 Raptors will finally be recognized at an official level by the US military and diplomatic community, Military.com reports.

The Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates has been used for 27 years - off the record. But it's been a pretty poorly kept secret. US Air Force aircraft such as the KC-10 tanker, RQ-4 Global Hawk drone, Boeing's E-3 Sentry command and control plane, the U-2 Dragon Lady ultra-high altitude jet (also once flown by the Central Intelligence Agency) and the F-22 Raptor have been seen taking off from and landing at the base.

The main unit running out of Al Dhafra Air Base, aside from the UAE Air Force, is the US Air Force's 380th Air Expeditionary Wing. As of October 26, 2016, Raptors had conducted 716 sorties in the fight against Daesh, sometimes referred to by US commanders as Operation Inherent Resolve, according to USAF data.

After years of wrangling, US mining giant Freeport McMoRan has agreed to give up its majority stake in the Grasberg copper and gold mine, ceding control to the Indonesian authorities.

The US holding will reportedly be reduced to 49 percent from the current 90 percent with date of transfer to be negotiated.

The world's biggest publicly listed copper miner also agreed to build a smelter in Indonesia within five years, according to Energy Minister Ignasius Jonan.

Grasberg is the world's largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the Indonesian province of Papua. The US company along with its local unit have been conducting mining and exploration activities in the area for almost 30 years.

On Tuesday, the shares of Freeport closed over two percent lower at $15.21.

Obama 'still running the FBI,' says lawyer after agency blocks access to Clinton records because of "lack of public interest"

FBI officials are claiming a lack of public interest justifies their decision to keep Hilary Clinton's very controversial archived records from being released to the public.

"We have determined you have not sufficiently demonstrated that the public's interest in disclosure outweighs personal privacy interests of the subject," says the August 28 letter from David Hardy, the FBI's record manager.

"I'm just stunned. This is exactly what I would have expected had Mrs. Clinton won the election," Clevenger told the Washington Times. "It looks like the [Barack] Obama Administration is still running the FBI," Clevenger added.

"It is incumbent upon the requester to provide documentation regarding the public's interest in the operations and activities of the government before records can be processed pursuant to the FOIA," said the time-wasting response, which will likely be appealed by the filer, New York lawyer Ty Clevenger.

3 geopolitical conflicts which show U.S. goals vs. those of China and Russia's: Venezuela, Afghanistan and North Korea

Putin xi
In spite of the rapidity or protracted nature of US decline, Russia and China, in speaking in a single voice, have lead to the US being isolated in the elite club of the three superpowers.

While some pundits continue to downplay the increasingly strong partnership between Russia and China, the reality is that as Russia's economy continues to grow and as China's geo-political pronouncements continue to become more wide reaching, the world is witnessing the final stage of a new geo-political alignment that has been many years in the making.

China and Russia are now, not only on the same side of many global issues but they are speaking in a singular voice with a similarly loud volume.

Three areas where this has manifested itself include of Venezuela, Afghanistan and North Korea. In each of these cases, both Russia and China are saying almost identical things at the same time and are doing so forcefully.

Comment: The decline of the US is actually occurring at a rather rapid clip. And not just a decline, but something more akin to an implosion. At the same time, and in strong contrast, we can now hold up China and Russia as examples of how relatively responsible countries behave on the world stage.

Any way the wind blows: Nancy Pelosi finally condemns Antifa

House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi officially condemned violence from Antifa on Tuesday after months of attacks on Trump supporters and free speech protesters.

The statement from Pelosi was in response to the acts of violence over the weekend in Berkeley, which led to the arrests of 13 suspects connected to Antifa's violence.

"Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts," Pelosi wrote. "The violent actions of people calling themselves antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted."

This marks the first-time Pelosi has condemned Antifa and is quite possibly the first time she has acknowledged the group's existence. A keyword search of her website and her Twitter account revealed no other instances in which she used the word.

Comment: Not the first time Pelosi has changed her tune to match public opinion.

Japan's prime minister and South Korea's president have agreed to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang "to the maximum," seeking tougher sanctions after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a statement condemning North Korea's latest missile test.

In a phone call Wednesday morning, Shinzo Abe and Moon Jae-in discussed their neighbor's "violent conduct" and agreed that pressure on Pyongyang should be raised "to the maximum," South Korea's presidential office said.

"I certainly hope that we'll be able to have a strong resolution following up this... statement," said Japan's UN ambassador Koro Bessho after the UN Security Council condemned North Korea's latest missile launch.

"The Security Council further condemns the DPRK for its outrageous actions and demands that the DPRK immediately cease all such actions. The Security Council stresses that these DPRK actions are not just a threat to the region, but to all UN member states," read the UNSC statement which, however, did not threaten any sanctions.

"The world is united against North Korea," US ambassador Nikki Haley said following the unanimous vote on the US-drafted text.

"The United States will not allow their lawlessness to continue," she added.
