SOTT Focus: Irrelevant Elections? Colombia Joins NATO on Eve of Presidential Vote

On May 27th, Colombian citizens cast their ballots to elect their next president, with the result producing no majority winner and thus sparking a run-off vote. As is the case during political campaigns these days, numerous political strategies and narratives have been pushed by the media and are proliferating on social networks. Prior to the second round, which takes place on June 17th, I wanted to share a few observations.

"I'm leaving, but nothing's changing, so go ahead and vote!"
One theme in particular has been rather prominent. For years now, comparing Colombia to Venezuela, and scaring the population into thinking "well, we don't want to end up with a Chavez or a Maduro" has been a popular political sales pitch.

Given the campaign promises and political origins of some of the candidates, the possibility of taking the country towards a socialist system - which would be a first for Colombia - might in other circumstances be a credible scenario. However, there are subtle (and not so subtle) details that make such a radical change in the the country's ultra-Yankee outlook quite impossible.

Russian mission in Syria almost complete, now it's up to Damascus and allies to continue the fight

american troops syria
Russia has almost reached the end of its military operations in the Levant, which is certainly not the case for the central government in Damascus and its main allies within the "Axis of Resistance."

Moscow is preparing to put an end to the occupation of some of the remaining sites still held by ISIS and al-Qaeda in northern Syria and is paving the way for the political process, which is expected to be complex. However, it is predictable that the political process may not unfold as desired by President Vladimir Putin, and for one simple reason, the position of the Syrian government. This will run counter to what the Russian patron thinks and will become clear when all the countries involved (USA, Turkey, Russia, Iran, Syria) eventually unite around one negotiating table.

Russia was able to cohabit with the US for decades in Germany after World War II because the spheres of influence were divided between the countries that themselves won the war. In the Levant, things are entirely different. Even though Russia itself has been ready to "co-exist" with the US on one territory in Syria, the government of Damascus - along with its allies in the "Axis of Resistance" - is totally unwilling to allow or accept any foreign occupation of its territory, even temporarily.

Russia's allies also view the presence of US-French-British forces as the greatest threat to Syria. These are known for their planning and implementation of regime change, and for their underlying and unconditional support for Israel and its expansionist ambitions, with its occupation of neighbouring territory in the Middle East.

Comment: Basically, Russia has to balance a lot of 'interests' in its Syria intervention. It can support Syria only so far - explicitly - without crossing certain lines in respect to Israel and the U.S. But it can continue to support Syria in other ways, even while Syria and its allies take action in which the Russians don't participate directly. If Russia can balance all sides peacefully, that would be ideal. But it looks like Syria is not willing to give up its territory, and will take action if necessary to get it back - with or without successful negotiations with their enemies. And Russia won't stop them.

Kim Yong-chol, the vice-leader of North Korea and the former head of the country's intelligence agency, is on his way to the US for talks to arrange the upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

Trump has confirmed earlier reports of Kim Yong-chol's arrival in a tweet. "We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea. Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more," Trump tweeted.

Yonhap earlier reported the North Korean official was due to arrive in the US on Wednesday. The summit is currently scheduled for June 12 in Singapore.

Comment: On again, off again, new players...never a dull moment. Perhaps we'd all like one.

Maduro: 'Colombia joining NATO is a threat to regional peace'

Santos Maduro

Colombia will be the first "global partner" of NATO in Latin America, beginning next week, President Juan Manuel Santos announced Friday.

Venezuela has rejected the announcement by Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos that his country will be entering the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as a "global partner."
"Venezuela denounces once more before the international community the intention of Colombian authorities to lend themselves to introduce, in Latin America and the Caribbean, a foreign military alliance with nuclear capacity, which in every way constitutes a serious threat for peace and regional stability," a statement by the foreign ministry said.
Likewise, Venezuela reiterated that it supports the historical position of the region to distance itself from the politics and wars of NATO, and from "any other army or military organization that desires to apply force to the suffering of the people, to impose and guarantee the hegemony of a particular political and economic model."

The statement asks that the Colombian government fulfill its obligations toward peace and peaceful solutions to regional controversies.

Comment: Have to wonder what kind of incentives (or threats) were made to Colombia by NATO principals. Maduro has a valid perspective, backed up by decades of interference and manipulation by the US and Western 'cabal'itics. As the first Latin American partner in NATO, Colombia becomes the premier military staging arena.

Macron: 'We have common roots with Russia'

In the course of a month, Macron has gone from denouncing Russia and aligning with Trump's agenda to reinvigorating Russian ties and slamming Trump's policies

Speaking at a plenary session at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Emmanuel Macron, a guest of honor at the international event which featured over 15,000 participants from over 100 countries, advocated a 'new economic and social model' of cooperation between Paris and Moscow, iterating a sentiment that seems to be the polar opposite of the overwhelming Rusophobic mentality that has been sweeping the west for going on two years now.

TASS reports:
ST. PETERSBURG, May 25. /TASS/. French President Emmanuel Macron would like Russia to remain a member of the Council of Europe, as he himself said at the plenary session of the of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF)

"I would like Russia to remain in the Council of Europe," he said. "We should maintain dialogue with everyone, we have common roots. We need to work on new projects. We must also work on a new economic and social model that would help improve the standards of living," Macron noted.

Russia and France must work together to build an atmosphere of trust, he said. "I want us to work arm-in-arm to build an atmosphere of trust," he said at a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. "We must bridge the gaps and, despite all the shocks, we must re-build partnership," he stressed.
Prior to Trump's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Macron literally got behind Trump as he demonstrated that he was willing to be a partner in crime with America on its activities to destabilize the Middle East when he joined Trump's coalition to conduct a 'precision strike' against targets in Damascus last month.

Comment: Look how US bosom-buddy countries are flocking to Russia as if their economies are dependent upon it. A newer art of the deal?

Austrian Chancellor Kurz: 'US has become unreliable', thanks Trump for helping Europe 'get rid of all illusions'

The US, under Donald Trump's administration, is becoming increasingly unpredictable and "unreliable" to its European partners, the Austrian chancellor noted, joining a chorus of EU members urging for more unity and self-reliance.

"The US has become more and more unreliable for us," Sebastian Kurz told the Financial Times. "The most important thing is that Europe has to remain united."

Concerns about Donald Trump's administration have been growing across the EU recently. Earlier this month, a poll showed that 82 percent of Germans believe the US is not a reliable political partner after Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that Europe "needs to take its fate into its own hands."

Comment: Correct on every count. It's so refreshing to hear European leaders take stock of reality. What actions this translates into remains to be seen, however. The west/east split in Europe is very pronounced.

Trump is shaking Western dependency and policy to the core. The EU is waking up to the idea it has to solve its own problems, make its own deals and suffer or enjoy the consequences of their actions. Unexpected, undefined, un-American.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said they have launched a military operation in Gaza after a barrage of mortar shells was fired towards Israel. The Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted the majority of the missiles.

"The IDF is currently operating in the Gaza Strip. The explosions heard are related to this activity," the Israeli forces said in a statement released on Twitter. "A barrage" of at least 28 mortar shells was launched towards several locations in Israel, according to the IDF.

"Most of the launches were intercepted by the IDF's Iron Dome aerial-defense system," the army added.

Rocket sirens went off in several Israeli locations close to the Gaza border on Tuesday morning, the IDF stated. An Israeli kindergarten located near the Gaza Strip was hit by several mortars, video released by Israeli forces shows. No injuries were reported as the rockets were fired when children only made their way to the school.

Democracy? Italy's president rejects distinguished economic minister because he would "risk an exit from the euro"

Italian President Sergio Mattarella
© Alessandro Bianchi / ReutersItalian President Sergio Mattarella
Italian President Sergio Mattarella has used a shady pretext to turn down a Euro-skeptic coalition pick for economy minister, as he seeks to mold a cabinet after own political views, an MP from the coalition told RT.

Manlio Di Stefano, an MP from the anti-establishment Five-Star Movement (M5S), which has teamed up with Lega Nord in a parliament, argued that it was Mattarella's fault that Sunday did not bring a much-desired end to the two-month long post-election stalemate. Mattarella on Sunday rejected the candidacy of former industry minister and a distinguished economist, Paolo Savona, who was suggested by the coalition to fill the post of the minister of economy.

"I asked for a figure, who would mean not risking an exit from the euro," Mattarella explained, citing Savona's Euro-sceptic remarks.

Comment: He wouldn't be the first EU head who ignored public sentiment by refusing to even put their place in the Eurozone up for a vote:

SOTT Focus: Why is Russia Being Blamed For The Downing of Flight MH17 - Again?

MH-17
© Maxim Zmeyev / Reuters
On Thursday 24th of May, the Dutch, Australian and Ukranian-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 gave a press conference in which, for the first time, they explicitly accused Russia of providing the anti-aircraft system that shot down the passenger plane - although they had suggested as much in the past.

They made two central claims:
  1. That a BUK-TELAR Russian unit from the 53rd brigade based in Kursk crossed the border into Ukraine, and
  2. That the markings on the remains of the BUK missile allegedly used in the incident indicate it was Soviet made.
Bizarrely, the first claim is borrowed largely from articles on the Bellingcat website (such as this one). JIT members themselves mentioned that the arguments had been published by Bellingcat already, although they insisted they performed their own 'independent analysis' and that they are withholding further evidence. Eliot Higgins, the man who runs Bellingcat, is listed as an "expert" on the Atlantic Council website, and described as a "Nonresident Senior Fellow, Digital Forensic Research Lab, Future Europe Initiative". The Atlantic Council 'think-tank' is known for its pro-US/NATO and anti-Russian stance, and among the members of its Advisory Board and Directors we find Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, James Woolsey, James Clapper, Rupert Murdoch and the heads of finance and defense corporations such as Lockheed Martin, Airbus and Goldman Sachs, among many others. Thus, any research based on Bellingcat's is hardly unbiased and independent.

'Ineffective': Afghan lawmakers demand annulment of deal allowing US troops to stay

The agreement was signed in 2014 after the inauguration of President Ashraf Ghani, permitting a portion of NATO's troops, mostly American, to remain in the country.

Members of the Meshrano Jirga (upper house of the Afghan parliament) slammed the security agreement, signed by the Afghan and US governments in 2014 as "ineffective" and called for its cancellation, Ariana News reported.

"The security agreement with the United States should come into reconsideration because the U.S. has not acted based on this accord. The issue is harmful to the country and deteriorating the security situation," Senator Qais Wakil said.
