Best of the Web: Aviation experts baffled by crash of China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735

China Eastern Airlines MU5735 01
Monday's devastating crash of a Boeing 737 operated by China Eastern Airlines has gripped the US aviation industry (aka Boeing) in what's shaping up to be another major scandal barely a year after the plane manufacturer had finally managed to move beyond the disastrous rollout of the 737 MAX 8, which left hundreds dead as a design flaw led to two crashes, one in Ethiopia and the other in Indonesia.

Those crashes prompted global groundings and an extensive investigation which revealed that the FAA had essentially abdicated its oversight responsibility - while one internal Boeing email blasted the MAX 8 for being designed by "clowns who were overseen by monkeys".

As if the crash itself wasn't embarrassing enough for the jet-maker, footage of the incident showing the plane essentially falling out of the sky has been seen by thousands, if not millions, of people, many of whom are already hoping for answers.

Chinese airlines haven't bought any new Boeing planes for years at this point, and Monday's crash raises the possibility that Boeing could be barred from the world's second-largest market for air travel.

Local Chinese media reported shortly afterward that the crash had been caused by an electrical failure, but whether this is actually true remains unclear. At this point, little is known for certain about the circumstances surrounding the crash (and it will take investigators days, if not weeks, to examine the data from the plane's "black box", which must be recovered from the crash site in a mountainous region in Guangxi Province.

A Boeing 737 carrying 132 people has plummeted 30,000ft to the ground before bursting into flames in remote Chinese mountains.

The China Eastern Airlines flight nosedived before smashing into the hillside and erupting in a huge fireball near the city of Wuzhou in Teng county in the southern province of Guangxi.

A rescue official reportedly said the plane had completely disintegrated while a fire sparked by the crash burned down bamboo and trees before being put out.

Comment: Social media is buzzing with speculation over the crash, with many pointing out that even a plane of that size should retain some glide capability.

Best of the Web: Was bombing of Mariupol theater staged by Ukrainian Azov extremists to trigger NATO intervention?

azov mariupol theater
Testimony by evacuated Mariupol residents and warnings of a false flag attack undermine the Ukrainian government's claims about a Russian bombing of a local theater sheltering civilians.

Western media have reported that Russia's military deliberately attacked the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama theater in Mariupol, Ukraine, claiming that it was filled with civilians and marked with signs reading "children" on its grounds.

The supposed bombing took place just as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to US Congress for a no fly zone, fueling the chorus for direct military confrontation with Russia and apparently inspiring President Joseph Biden to brand Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, as a "war criminal."

A closer look reveals that local residents in Mariupol had warned three days before the March 16 incident that the theater would be the site of a false flag attack launched by the openly neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, which controlled the building and the territory around it.

Civilians that escaped the city through humanitarian corridors have testified that they were held by Azov as human shields in area, and that Azov fighters detonated parts of the theater as they retreated. Despite claims of a massive Russian airstrike that reduced the building to ashes, all civilians appear to have escaped with their lives.

Video of the attack on the theater remains unavailable at the time of publication; only photographs of the damaged structure can be viewed. The Russian Ministry of Defense has denied conducting an airstrike on the theater, asserting that the site had no military value and that no sorties were flown in the area on March 16.

Flashback Best of the Web: Putin the Risk-Taker

putin julius caesar
Like Julius Caesar before him, Vladimir Putin is unafraid to take bold, but always calculated, action in service to his country.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's entire career, from the Soviet KGB in Dresden to the Russian presidency in Moscow, has displayed bold risk-taking. In situations where he has been under great pressure to make difficult decisions, he has repeatedly demonstrated a propensity or ability to act promptly, decisively, and with considerable effectiveness. A few examples from key turning points in Putin's political life will suffice to demonstrate these points. On the more humorous side, but perhaps no less indicatively, Putin almost married a college girlfriend but at the last minute reneged, leaving her standing at the altar.

Dresden 1989

His first political test came with the fall of the Berlin wall, which threatened the KGB's outpost in Dresden where Putin had been stationed since 1985 to recruit agents undercover as deputy director of the House of Soviet-German Friendship. As mobs of protesters turned their attention to the KGB building after storming Dresden's Stasi headquarters, Putin went outside to confront the "aggressively-minded crowd" and answered their questions. He then went back inside and called the Soviet military base for help but was told that they could do nothing without an order from Moscow and that "Moscow is silent." "Hours" later troops arrived and the crowd quietly dispersed (N. Gevorkyan and A. Kolesnikov, Ot Pervogo Litsa: Razgovory s Vladimirom Putinym (Moscow: Vagrius, 2000), p. 71.]

Comment: Time has proven Mr. Hahn more than correct. Putin has demonstrated patience, forbearance and timing in dealings with enemies foreign and domestic. These are the attributes of the true warrior.

Best of the Web: American military expert explains 'slow' Russian advance in Ukraine

Russia has largely achieved its objective of neutralizing the Ukrainian military, but Western governments mistakenly believe the deliberate progress designed to avoid civilian casualties reflects weakness and are funneling weapons to prolong the fighting, a former top Pentagon adviser has said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given strict orders from the outset to avoid civilian casualties and extensive property damage, retired US Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor told the Grayzone in an extensive interview on Tuesday.

This has slowed the Russians' advance "to the point where it has given false hope both to the Ukrainians ... but seized on by people in the West, to try and convince the world that a defeat is in progress, when in fact the opposite is the case," Macgregor said.

"The war, for all intents and purposes, has been decided," the retired colonel said. "The entire operation from day one was focused on the destruction of Ukrainian forces. That's largely complete."

Best of the Web: The root causes of the war in Ukraine

Guy Mettan, Swiss journalist and writer
Guy Mettan, Swiss journalist and writer
In troubled times, when no one knows what is going on and packs of indignants and pseudo-experts overwhelm the public space with pathos and idle theories, it is necessary to return to the fundamentals. In this case, in Montesquieu. Who said two important things. The first is that in matters of war one should not confuse the apparent causes with the root causes, and the second that one should not confuse those who triggered it with those who made it inevitable.

For the vast majority of the public and media intoxicated by decades of anti-Russian propaganda and for tv-set experts who have forgotten any strategic culture, the case of this war is heard: Putin is crazy. He is insane, paranoid, isolated in his Kremlin, a war criminal, a satrap sold to the oligarchs, a cynical megalomaniac who dreams of restoring the empire of the tsars, a reincarnation of Ivan the Terrible, an unbalanced and capricious dictator who attacked for no reason an innocent nation led by a democratic and courageous president supported by virtuous Europeans. The framework thus set - the Great Bad Guys on one side, the Good Guys on the other - the narrative of the war can unfold: the Russians bombed Babi Yar and a nuclear power plant, they massacre civilians, genocide is underway while the Ukrainians resist heroically.

Best of the Web: 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits off north Japan, tsunami alert issued - Mag 6.4 aftershock - 2.2 million homes without electricity

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory and plunging more than 2 million homes in the Tokyo area into darkness.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also triggered nuclear plant meltdowns, spewing massive radiation that still makes some parts uninhabitable.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no longer a tsunami threat though the Japan Meteorological Agency kept its low risk advisory in place. NHK national television said tsunami waves of 20 centimeters (8 inches) already reached shore in Ishinomaki, about 390 kilometers (242 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

NHK footage showed broken walls of a department store building fell to the ground and shards of windows scattered on the street near the main train station in Fukushima city, about 60 kilometers (36 miles) west from the coastline.

The Nazi influence on modern-day Ukrainian politics is clear, tangible, and willfully ignored by its Western supporters

A cursory look at the documents regarding the foundation of the Ukrainian state would make it appear quite European and democratic, which is exactly the reason why many might have dismissed Vladimir Putin's talk about neo-Nazis in Ukraine as rhetoric and propaganda. The truth, however, is much more complicated and cannot be summarized by saying "Ukrainian president is Jewish, and thus all allegations are untrue".

Tell me who your heroes are, and I will tell you who you are

One historical figure who has emerged as a hero in post-Maidan Ukraine is Stepan Bandera, a leader and ideologist of the militant wing of the far-right Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). Today, there are streets named after him, people sing songs in his honor and carry his portrait.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) cemented a $10 billion deal for a refining and petrochemical complex in China on Friday, meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping who urged joint efforts to counter extremism and terrorism.

The Saudi delegation, including top executives from state-owned oil company Saudi Aramco, arrived on Thursday on an Asia tour that has already seen the kingdom pledge an investment of $20 billion in Pakistan and seek to make additional investments in India's refining industry.

Saudi Arabia signed 35 economic cooperation agreements with China worth a total of $28 billion at a joint investment forum during the visit, the Saudi state news agency SPA said.

Comment: The current geo-economic reshuffle is shunning the West. A new age in commerce has dawned, playing to cooperative strengths.

Stickers depicting a smiling President Joe Biden with a pointed finger captioned "I did that!" are popping up at gas pumps throughout the country as record-high gas prices are burning holes through the pockets of working-class Americans.

The decals, which can be purchased in packs of one hundred on Amazon for about eight dollars, began surfacing last year and went viral, the Boston Herald reported in November. About a week before the Herald's article, the national gas price average was hovering around $3.40, Breitbart News noted at the time.
