NASA is training humanity's most powerful telescope on a "city-killing" asteroid to determine whether or not we need to brace for deep impact.
Dubbed 2024 YR4, the building-sized space rock reportedly has a 1-in-43 chance of slamming into Earth in 2032 — up from about 1%, the Independent reported.
The asteroid was discovered by NASA in December and is reportedly at the top of NASA's watch list when it comes to hazards from beyond.
With this "time-critical" threat potentially on our doorstep, the space agency has enlisted the aid of the James Webb telescope to study 2024 YR4 and gauge how much damage it would cause if it did strike our planet, per a blog post by the European Space Agency.
"It is very important that we improve our size estimate for 2024 YR4: the hazard represented by a 40 m asteroid is very different from that of a 90 m asteroid," the ESA wrote.

Based on these calculations, a strike by YR4 would cause roughly the same amount of damage as the Tunguska event, which laid waste to around 80 million trees in Siberia in 1908, according to Space.com.
However, as these estimates are based on terrestrial telescope data, they only see sunlight reflected off the asteroid's surface, providing them a limited picture of the cosmic body.
In reality, the asteroid could be much larger.
James Webb would help astronomers glean a more accurate measurement of its size by using its infrared instruments to study the heat — rather than brightness — given off by the asteroid.
"In general, the brighter the asteroid, the larger it is, but this relationship strongly depends on how reflective the asteroid's surface is," ESA officials said. "2024 YR4 could be 40 m [130 feet] across and very reflective, or 90 m [295 feet] across and not very reflective."
Also, because it orbits the sun, the telescope doesn't have to observe near-Earth bodies through our planet's obscuring atmosphere like its counterparts on the ground, giving it a much clearer view.
The first round of James Webb observations will transpire in March when the asteroid is at its brightest. It will then set its sights on the YR4 again in May as the space rock rockets away from the sun, which will be its final chance to provide observations until the asteroid's comeback tour in 2028.
These measurements will in turn be "used by ESA, NASA, and other organizations to more confidently assess the hazard and determine any necessary response," the ESA wrote.
This data would be crucial because even with the current size estimates, experts predict that a strike by YR4 could explode with the force of 15 megatons of TNT — 100 times more powerful than the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, the Daily Mail reported.

If such thing is related to a too high level of psychopathology around (it's the Planet Earth's cleansing mecanism - such thing exists) - what we see here is that it has started...

What is happening is just a steady increase of stones. We currently see one or two. In some years people will start to say: "oh there are many of those stones"
And some years later it will become so steady that people wil start to loose roofs

I sometimes wish to learn more about the swarm of asteroids - cannot recall its name. And the brown dwarf too. But it's a whole domain of knowledge and it requires serious look at it. I have been dedicating my time to psychopathology and applying it to current events. This could be a 500% job But I would say that the Fireballs are just part of nature - something should be taught at school - glad that Sott fills in the gap for us!

It just shows "reality". And we think that reality is all the geopolitics or else - when here, we see that there is a super mattering one - which is not included.

A nd I find it puzzling that Pierre L.'s articles haven't been finding more echo in main stream science. He just nailed things down with precision. He should logically trigger big flows of ink.
And for sure, what matters as well is that the chart hints at the phenomenon being in motion and increasing. Even if people wouldn't buy "the Earth has a cleansing mecanism" here there is a steady increase of events.
But overall, not to speak of "fear", or even "casualties" or else - I find the whole idea sooo interesting, especially in the fact that it seems to be something that should be taught early at school. It's definitely a concrete chunk of basic knowledge of the Universe and our relationship with it.
So how do you conclusively prove an asteroid that lands in an ocean, or a comet that leaves very few traces that it ever happened? I know you require very little evidence and in most cases none but science doesn't accept it without an abundance of proof.

It's a bit hard to follow as it seems that Madam Zarkhova speaks of a global warming phenomenon due to the Earth getting closer to the Sun

A member here pointed me out to the same idea - while I was strictly believing that there wasn't any form of any global warming - any light appreciated on this specific matter if you would like to (It has to do with the idea that there is no warming AT ALL - while "there is")
With respect to Earth's position relative to our Sun, I don't see the change in our proximity on its own as being a large influence on Earth. We already have almost instant connection to the Sun's various energy streams which means to me that the greatest changes on Earth will be brought about by changes in/on the Sun.
With respect to current 'modelling' of Earth's temperatures; they are just models and they lack all of the known Solar influences. It's fine to say we see 250 watts/Ft2 solar radiation at Earth, but that is just one of many energy streams we interact with. If the Earth changes its distance from the Sun then that radiation will change, but not by very much (+/- 50 watts tops).
Similarly, the models (and media) base their climate 'predictions' on temperature measurements made since the early 1800's - Two hundred years of data on a climate that has been cycling for hundreds of thousands of years?
I have dealt with data and process modelling for years and know that accuracy depends on the amount of data collected. Predicting the end of the world based on such a small data stream (200 years out of thousands) is like saying your house will burn up because your furnace heating cycle has just kicked on.
From what I understand:

I was asking about this because I just stumbled upon a report (link above) which states: And you see, I have been a fervent follower of Madam Zarkhova and while she had been (if I remember correctly) always focusing on "an ice age" - paf, here it is, Madam Zarkhova brings the concept of "we are in a global warming situation". I believe that you understand me.
It has been years since I am fighting against any form of tendency to buy into "global warming" and here it is, the elite in the matter who put us well above all the mediocre mains stream science... speaks of global warming.
Still, intelligence and scrutinization of what she says shows that she frames a mini ice age in it, and that she is explaining that the global warming phenomenon is a huge one spanning up to year 2600. And so it surely puts the global warming phenomenon in perspective - it's perfectly fine and it actually fits in my personal model! I am just puzzle dso as to why she suddenly goes into such waters.
There is of course the fact that she may have been explaining this for a while and that I haven't been attaching importance to it - this could be and I accept that.
And so, surely, the idea is that her sayings feed the bell ringing of "there-is-global-warming"

Back to your reply, thank you for providing knwoledgeable lights, especially regarding the measures. I understand it's not fiable enough to rely on measures dating back to 1800 and that it has to do with it as being a too small fraction of the whole that we would need to consider. Would you qualify it as 100% irrelevant?
I recall Pierre LESCAUDRON saying that the guys changed their instruments of measures around 1960 and that the quality before/after was so different that it was making the whole irrelevant. I could find this data bit if required, but pretty interesting. And of course both data sets seemed to have been melted in one cozy timeline!

What does increase the suns radiation effect is cloud cover. As temperatures rise lower cloud cover thins allowing more radiation to reflect off the surface further increasing the temperatures. And as clouds start forming higher less rain will be able to reach the planet before it evaporates. Higher temps also cause more oxygen to form which then makes fires burn hotter and faster on Earths surface. Makes them much easier to ignite also.
The planet at one time had no ice caps but that was before mammals had evolved and the planet consisted of reptiles and amphibians.
The planet would then slowly warm from the equator out and take about 12,000 to 13,000 years to defrost the entire planet.
I am getting to the understanding that the relevant Ice Age Sott sometimes talks about would not be the mini ice age you speak of - but one triggered by volcanoes, comet (anthropocosmic connection)
But, those mini ice ages lasting 100 years - wouldn't those be enough to disrupt global systems?

The binary star theory has been proven to be incorrect. Instead Earth collided with a dense interstellar cloud millions of years ago. The really interesting thing is that this makes all their dates taken by Carbon-14?dating wrong. Every single object they have ever dated is wrong. Nearby stellar explosions or supernovae are plausible sources of cosmic rays that could have enhanced the beryllium-10 production rate on Earth. However, their event rate is not high enough to account for a sufficiently nearby supernova that would yield the needed enhancement in cosmic-rays 10-million years ago. Collimated jets from Gamma-Ray Bursts would have produced a cosmic-ray pulse that is too short to account for the extended period of enhancement in beryllium-10 production.
Ice also has heat, although not as much as liquid water, so adding ice actually makes the amount of heat rise. Even objects which are very cold have some heat energy because their atoms are still moving. Pressure diffuses the molecules along with temperature causing advection which leads to adiabatic warming in subsiding air and diabatic heating.
But there is no way you are getting that far in understanding physics and chemistry which is why you will continue to believe global warming isn't happening because someone who isn't an expert told you so. And since it is too complex for you to understand you believe them. I get it. That's how they fool you. They put simple labels that are wrong on complex ideas because you can't or won't try to understand it. Like Musk putting out that DOGE has saved $55 billion dollars with its cost cutting. But when you look in-depth you realize that at most it's $2 billion and that is being generous because that's not considering contracts that were cancelled but will still have to be paid due to it saying it in the contract.
