I've applied the piezo-electric effect in several ignition systems over the years, and i believe a similar phenomenon occurs when crystals are electrically energized and used to generate a frequency.
What it reminds me of is how you can make that same sound by holding a wooden pencil tightly against the back of a piece of stiff paper and slide the paper over the pencil and make that squeaky noise.
That'll probably sound like nonsense if you haven't tried it - but it's something you learn as a youngster when a favorite aunt or uncle or grandparent show you and say it's magic. Kind of like being taught how to whistle by blowing over a blade of grass held to your mouth. When you're 4 years old or so it surely qualifies as magic.
