Record rainfall and flooding around the world marked this month, along with some rare snow events in both hemispheres.

In Bangladesh, Laos, China and India, a severe monsoon season left millions of people stranded and caused significant damage to infrastructure. Parts of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and France were also hit by heavy rain, flooding major roads and prompting evacuations. Sydney, Australia, was flooded twice this month by unprecedented downpours, prompting mass evacuations of several low-lying suburbs.

In the US Midwest, flooding caused road closures and evacuations, and the rapid build-up of water caused a partial failure of the Rapidan Dam in Minnesota, washing away part of a riverbank, destroying a power station and causing power cuts to some 600 homes. The flood was the second largest in the dam's history and the equivalent of a 100-year flood.

Unseasonable snow hit western Canada and parts of the northwestern US. In Germany, 29 hikers had to be rescued after six feet of snow fell rapidly on mountain Zugspitze.

South Africa's Northern Cape experienced its first snowfall in about 40 years, while parts of Argentina and Chile were hit by huge snowfalls and avalanches that isolated dozens of towns.

As Brazil's wetlands were ravaged by unprecedented wildfires, more than 1,300 people died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as Islamic holy sites were hit by unprecedentedly high temperatures.
