r_rolo1 German place names, so I assume the image is German, Austrian-Hungarian empire on the map too, so pre-1914Not that. While Russia is shown as a barbaric huge head ( and it is not even the more derrogatory one: Serbia is a pig and Ireland is the English pet ), note that Portugal, Netherlands and Denmark are not even considered important enough to get a caricature ( in a map where even Corsica and Sardinia have one , mind that ). Portugal at best is the rock where Spain is sleeping in and Denmark is something stuck in Germany's Prussian hat ... typical German thought
Found it interesting that the Germany has soldiers pointing both ways, recognizing the threat from the West too
First of all, there ain't no mystery, to put it in a learned way, that this is pre WWI German or Austro-Hungarian caricature ( the language is German ). The enemies are Britain and France in the west and Russia in the east. How they are portrayed respectively relates to the title of this book.Well, I was just pointing out, in the line of the article author, that the "west" fears/despises/hates Russia, for sure, but atleast recognizes that Russia exists ... unlike it does with other European nations. Have you never noticed that, every time in this site and others, when you say West (like , let's say, this article ), it is almost always the USA, UK, France and Germany in a good day, and maybe Italy and Spain if they are not calling them pigs ( oh right, PIIGS , I forgot Ireland ) in that particular day? Never Ireland, Portugal, Norway, even Sweden ?
Secondly, Austro-Hungary attacking Serbia ( the pig ) in 1914 started the war. The casus belli was the assassination of archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo by the organization called Young Bosnia claimed to be Serbian inspired by the afore mentioned empire. So Serbia, branded the pig by the civilized Austro-Hungary, was in no way neutral.
Thirdly, do they teach history in schools?
And lastly, I don't see the text discussing the humour or artistic value of the caricature? It's there to emphasize the narrative. How about sticking to the topic for a change? I only see one person, the ever diligent Russia-loving Sejanus, responding to the author's text.
Are the blank ones countries that have declared themselves neutral (Portugal, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Serbia )
German place names, so I assume the image is German, Austrian-Hungarian empire on the map too, so pre-1914- fully aware, or assume?
comments are not restricted to the text articlesNo, they're not. Let us discuss Shelley's England 1819 then.
r_rolo1 The map recognizes the current enemies. Portugal, Holland and Denmark had no part in this amicable dispute. Therefore ignored but given the opportunity to be there. Fair enough, I'd say.Well, THAT was my point Russia was and is hated by the "West", but it is not ignored. As much bad being hated is, it beats being ignored by a mile ...
The West term varies. Even Montenegro today prides itself of becoming a part of the west. You mentioned the US, the UK, France, Germany always referred to as the West. Who else calls the shots? Exactly - never Ireland, Portugal, Norway and Sweden. They're to the West as Ireland was, as depicted in the caricature map, to UK.
And to remember but a remark from president Trump on FOX:
โWhy should my son go to Montenegro to defend it from attack?โ Fox host Tucker Carlson asked. President Trump responded: โI understand what youโre saying. Iโve asked the same question.โ Irrelevant, out of the picture.
