We've always had a few of these here. The worst part is that some are baby jellyfish, but the bulk seem to be that the surf breaks up the jellyfish's stinging tentacles, etc., into floating stingers, each equivalent to a nasty ant bite, or worse, and they get so bad you just can't surf at all. For years, many incorrectly called them "sea lice" and these bits float everywhere to the point that you can't surf without a full suit - which in Florida is usually rather hot.
We had a huge bloom of these things about 2 years ago, and it seemed that their sudden sprouting was somehow related (at least in time) to the Horizon Oil Spill, its oceanic imbalance, and the time it took to get from off Louisiana to the Gulf Stream to here.
Now I guess that that oceanic imbalance has made its way there, via the Gulfstream. (A lot like Japan's junk washing up on the US Pacific Coast.
