Today as never before we need to comprehend the course, logic, and path of the process of history. Every day we need to make decisions that will affect future generations. It has become obvious that no single nation, confession, social class or even civilization can solve these problems on its own. We increasingly have to listen to one another: Europe and Asia, Christians and Muslims, White and Black peoples, citizens of modern democratic states and places where traditional society survives. The key is to understand one another correctly, avoid hasty conclusions, and acquire the true spirit of tolerance and respect toward those with different value systems, habits, and norms.

Who is winning the struggle for hearts and minds in today's world?
It certainly isn't Obama, the US or the EU.
It's Mr. Vladimir Putin, regardless of what one may think of him.
Putin was asked to name three principles he believes are essential for a leader to follow.
The first one is never to evade responsibility, he said. โOne you start doing so โ the game is over.โ
The second principle is to never make headstrong decisions alone without listening to advice, he added. โBut if opinions are split, one must have courage to make the final decision.โ
Finally, according to Putin, a leader must always understand what the daily concerns of ordinary people are.
โYou canโt work otherwise,โ the president said.
And if he is genuinely true to his avowed principles that is why Vladimir Putin is winning.
Unfortunately in the US, our leaders duck responsibility, make rash decisions (and often very bad ones bereft of counterpoint) and are totally disconnected from the concerns of ordinary folks (unless you count phony campaign promises).
What I cannot discern is whether Putin is truly following his principles. Russia is half a world away from here. I would be a hypocrite if I disparaged Mr. Putin's character as a means of negating his message. That would be shooting the messenger, such as the politically correct indulge in.
