The best book on the people around (and perhaps behind) 9/11: Another 19 by Kevin Ryan.
They're specialists in things like "continuity of government", coups, advanced demolition techniques, arms smuggling, covert military operations, news media manipulation, money laundering, covert dealings with Middle Eastern terrorists, security systems for the World Trade Center, and air defense systems.
They're proven killers, liars, and thieves who have demonstrated they'll do just about anything to get what they want.
As a group, these 19 actually ran US air defense system AND security for the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. They also managed the clean up and the (laughable) investigation, set post-attack military plans, and explained it all - including the "need" to invade Iraq to the press.
They were involved in things like the Phoenix Program, drug running in Vietnam, Iran Contra, the First Gulf War...
All in all a very experienced group - with close ties to the Bush family and its cronies - that was more than capable of pulling 9/11 off. See more here.
While it may do what it purports to do, reveal/speculate on connections and criminal behaviors/intentions of US military-industrial elites (I will be able to comment on that point when I have read the book) some very interesting omissions are commented on by two and one star reviewers on Amazon. They point to the weaknesses of the book in its analysis of the Pentagon attack, and its lack of discussion of any connections to Zionist and radical Israeli political complicity/motivations in the 911 attacks. Readers should check out the following reviews in addition to Ryan's book.

"While it falls considerably short of a piece of truly superior research like David Ray Griffin's Debunking 9/11 Debunking, Ryan's book might serve to crack the door open for a complete neophyte to 9/11 research. For me, that door was cracked open in 2004 when I saw Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which, on a shallower level, goes into many of the same connections Ryan does: the Carlyle Group, the Saudi Royals, etc.
"However, if the shortcomings of Another Nineteen are evident to long-time 9/11 truth activists like me, they should ultimately be of serious concern to all those who seek 9/11 truth."

"Received a copy from amazon and went straight to chapter 10, "John,Paul,Peter,and the Pentagon" and sure enough not one mention that it MAY or May Not have been a missile that did the damage to the Pentagon. This looks like an intentional omission which seriously discredits all of this book."
