Micro-quake near Wisconsin city bothered by booms

Federal geologists say a minor earthquake occurred this week near the Wisconsin city where researchers have been investigating a series of unexplained booming sounds. The U.S. Geological Survey said Thursday the 1.5 magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday just after midnight in the eastern Wisconsin city of Clintonville.

Geophysicist Paul Caruso says loud booming noises have been known to accompany earthquakes. He says it's possible the mysterious sounds are linked to the quake.

City officials have been seeking answers related to the late-night booms, which started Sunday night and have as yet defied explanation.

I watched the press announcement coverage at town hall meeting aired on t.v. First, it was given by the town administrator, who read it (instead of the USGS who wrote it). Second, the team coming in to investigate (paid geologists) were coming in Thursday, and were going to conduct tests thursday and friday evening - and then "suddenly" the USGS solves it? Third, the first thing they ruled out was an earthquake, saying it was too shallow, no more than a mile deep - and now it is 3 miles or less deep?? And a series of earthquakes (but USGS only picked up one earthquake so are generalizing based on other heard sounds?). And their answer doesn't explain why now a second town, 60+ away, is hearing sounds (but towns in between aren't). Seems like they just want this subject to go away, and fast!
