Obama always wanted out of Afghanistan. It's impoverished and has no resources, but he inherited it from Bush/Cheney. What better way to grab some kudos than to end an unpopular war, "kill" the #1 most wanted man in the world, and use that to pull out just as election season starts?
We're going to see the US version of the Osama story ride front and center all the way to election day.
Afghanistan has no natural resources? The USGS shows vast quantaties of natural gas in Afghanistan. 36 Trillion cubic feet or so of natural gas. And that's a conservative estimated figure mind you. They also have a plethora of non fuel mineral deposits; precious metals and stones.
Extracts below from Wikipedia.
In 2010, U.S. Pentagon officials along with American geologists have revealed the discovery of nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan.[16] Plans are being made by the Afghan government to begin extracting these but with the Taliban insurgency and the corruption there is no telling what will happen.
A memo from the Pentagon stated that Afghanistan could become the "Saudi Arabia of lithium".[18]
Lithium is 21st century gold!
It's also an area of geopolitical importance. The western corporations need the Afghan corridor for control of future pipelines from the East into Europe.
Afghanistan is also of great strategic military importance to the US. They still won't be leaving anytime soon.
It is amazing how so many hopefuls still need to hold on tight to the idea of Obama as a basically peace loving president stuck with a war he never wanted in a far off impoverished country fighting to win a free and open election with one hand tied behind his back. Well, maybe they might like to read the following which may go someway to clarifying for them why the US is still digging in there, why Obama has hugely increased spending, troop numbers, assassinations, etc, and perhaps they might begin to see why he has absolutely no intention of leaving – period! Now or after any phony election, no matter what he says on the subject. They might also like to consider the thought that perhaps they are in danger of falling for the oldest con in the political book, namely believing there is a difference between power structures because it says so on the label of the election tin! For Bush read Obama, for Obama read Bush. They are all slights of hands by the Wizard of Oz designed to hood winking you into believing in oppositional politics when really there is no such a thing as regime change when it comes to global real politics. Obama will not win or lose the election because of anything that we think about him now or in the run up into the campaign. His re-election or not has already been decided by the paymasters… if he serves their interest he stays, if it serves their interest to get rid of him and wheel in the next dummy, someone else gets the job, and he goes to Goldman Sachs. Nothing else matters. The rest is window dressing and delusion. By all means watch the show, but don’t, pray don’t believe any of it means anything! The king is dead… Long live the king!

“The massive mine deposits at Reko Diq in Chagai Balochistan are part of the same geological belt discovered in Afghanistan, which the Pentagon recently claimed was worth one trillion dollars, though President Hamid Karzai claimed it was worth more than 3 trillion dollars.
According to a report in the New York Times on June 13, 2010 by James Risen: "The previously unknown deposits - including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium - are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe. An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the Saudi Arabia of lithium, a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and Black Berrys."
The room being hung around with a collection of the portraits of remarkable men, among them were those of Bacon, Newton and Locke. Hamilton asked me who they were. I told him they were my trinity of the three greatest men the world had ever produced, naming them. He paused for some time: "The greatest man," said he, "that ever lived, was Julius Caesar."
