As I recall, these cytokines produced in the lungs have a possible link to flu fatalities. As best as I understand it, the cytokines themselves can be damaging to lung tissue, or rather the lung tissue response to the cytokines can lead to serious complications such as fluid production and accumulation (essentially drowning oneself)
I think I recall the excessive cytokine production in the lungs is particularly linked to the most serious flu epidemics.
This is all recalled from only a very few articles I've seen that mentioned this and so needs verification and integration to qualify as knowledge - but perhaps it can help point in a good direction to seek.
