Intense 2021 Atlantic hurricane season comes to an end: Lots of storms but a slow finish

The intense 2021 Atlantic hurricane season comes to its official end Tuesday, a season that saw 21 named tropical storms and hurricanes.

This was the third-most for any hurricane season, behind only 2020's record 30 storms and the 28 storms that formed in 2005. A typical season sees 14 storms.

And for the second year in a row, the entire list of names for the season was used up, from Tropical Storm Ana in May to Tropical Storm Wanda in November.

It was also a record sixth consecutive year of above-normal activity.

Comment: Whew. An entire article without trying to tie the increasing intensity of the storms to 'global warming'. There are many other factors that figure into the increasing destructiveness of hurricanes.

With 'jaw-dropping,' 'astounding' and 'extraordinary' weather, Vancouver just had its rainiest fall ever

The fall of 2021 was quite a season.

Vancouver saw weather bombs, seven atmospheric rivers in a month and a tornado, among other things. And along with all of that came the rain.

The City of Vancouver, pelted with near-constant rain for three months, smashed its record for rainiest fall on record (which meteorologically speaking runs from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30) says Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Armel Castellan.

Over September, October and November 611.5 mm of rain fell here. That breaks the old record of 531.9 mm in 1996, smashing it by almost 80 mm; in meteorological terms, that's a lot. And records go back over 120 years.

On average we see 364.4 mm, so this year we got 168 per cent of the usual.

A showroom in northern Denmark turned into a vast bedroom after six customers and about two dozen employees were stranded by a snowstorm and forced to spend the night in the store.

Up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow fell, trapping the customers and employees when the department store in Aalborg closed on Wednesday evening.

"We slept in the furniture exhibitions and our showroom on the first floor, where we have beds, mattresses and sofa beds," store manager Peter Elmose told the Ekstra Bladet tabloid. People could "pick the exact bed they always have wanted to try."

Some areas of Oman experienced flooding on Tuesday as heavy rain and hail fell, and authorities warned people to stay away from wadis and other areas prone to flooding.

Cars were swept away in at least two wadis as water filled the valleys and roads were covered with water. The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority said it had rescued one person from a wadi in Rustaq in the north of the country.

"A team in the governorate of South Al Batinah managed to rescue a person after he became stuck in Wadi Al Ghashab stream in the wilayat of Rustaq, and he is in good health," the agency said in a statement.

Chennai in India grapples with floods again: Schools closed, traffic disrupted amid rain fury

Chennai residents are yet again grappling with waterlogging and floods after incessant rains. Many roads and subways have been closed for traffic, even as surplus water continued to be released from reservoirs.

Traffic diversions were enforced at many places and barricades were put up to caution road users. While there were disruptions in the state-run local bus services, suburban railway services were unhindered. Vehicles, mostly two-wheelers, were found stranded on several roads covered under sheets of water.

Reservoirs, including Poondi and Chembarambakkam here that cater to the drinking water needs of Chennai, released over 10,500 cusecs of surplus water in view of continuous showers in catchment areas, authorities said.

The release of surplus from Poondi dam in Tiruvallur district was stepped up (from an initial 4,253 cusecs to about 8,000 cusecs) in a phased manner up to about 12,000 cusecs by evening.

A 34-year-old man has died overnight in hospital after being struck by lightning earlier last week, while working on a mango farm in Berry Springs.

NT WorkSafe said in statement "preliminary findings indicate three men were working from the back of a trailer being towed by a tractor on a mango farm when lightning struck a nearby tree."

"It appears the lightning has arced from the tree towards the trailer, injuring three workers."

The trio was taken to hospital.

Germenino De Deus, 34, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital and on Saturday died from his injuries.
