Seven people from two families were killed in separate incidents of landslides triggered by incessant rains in western Nepal in the last 24 hours, police said on Monday.

Four members of a family were buried alive in the Bajhang district as a landslide swept away a house at the Bungal municipality-10 on Sunday night, according to the police.

Those killed included 50-year-old Kali Dhami, her daughter-in-law and grandchildren aged six and three, said the police.

However, six other members of the family managed to escape from nature's fury.

One person is dead after a fishing boat was struck by lightning in the Bear River late Saturday night, prompting an hours-long, multi-agency recovery operation.

The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office said it responded to reports of a lightning strike just after midnight Sunday in the Corinne area.

lInitial findings indicated that three people were on the boat when it was struck. The strike then caused the boat to capsize, sending them into the water. Two of the people were able to make it to shore, but the third went underwater and did not come back up.

Multiple agencies were called in to conduct an hours-long search of the river, later finding the body around 5:30 a.m.

The two survivors were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim's identity has not been released, pending notification of family or next-of-kin.

Many people were reported killed while no fewer than 2,000 houses were submerged by flood in Gummi town, headquarters of Gummi local government area of Zamfara State yesterday, but the state commissioner for humanitarian affairs and disaster management, Hon. Musa Yusuf Tsafe, said there was no report of death.

A resident who gave his name as Alhaji Abu Cash down, told our correspondent on telephone that property worth of millions of naira was lost, while a large number of livestock including cows, sheep, donkeys and goats were flushed away by the torrential rains.

Abu said most of the people that died were women and children who could not escape from the strong water flow.


According to him, the heavy rains started Friday around 9:00am and continued till 4:00am on Saturday.

Heavy rain in Austria has left parts of Vienna under water and caused severe damage in parts of the country.

Fast-moving torrents of muddy water swept cars through the ski resort of St Anton in western Austria.

A woman was dragged under a bus by the force of flooding in the Dobling area of Vienna.

She was reportedly taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Hurricane Ernesto pounded Bermuda Saturday with powerful winds and 35-foot waves, drenching the British island territory in heavy rain that it is expected could cause deadly flooding.

Residents of Bermuda reported a temporary calm as the eye of the storm passed overhead. However, the island was expected to endure hours of punishing winds and rain over the weekend as the storm crawled north.

The centre of the storm is forecast to continue moving away from Bermuda Saturday as it approaches southwestern Newfoundland late on Monday, the U.S. Weather Service said.

Nine killed, 12 injured in separate lightning strike incidents in Odisha, India

In the unfortunate incidents, nine people died while 12 others were injured in separate lightning strikes across Odisha on Saturday, the police said. Expressing grief over the unnatural deaths, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased.

Giving details about the deceased, the chief minister's office on Saturday said that two deaths each were reported in Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Bhadrak districts. Moreover, one death each was reported in Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Ganjam districts.

In Bargah district, 12 people were injured in a lightning strike in a field near Munupali village in Barpali block. Among these 12 injured, the condition of four was stated to be critical. All of them were shifted to the hospital where they were undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, CM Manjhi expressed grief and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased. For the injured, CM Manjhi announced free treatment and wished a speedy recovery.

Lightning has killed 21 sheep in Giswil OW. The lightning struck the summit cross of the Arnihaaggen on Monday, as reported by the Obwalden Farmers' Association on Saturday. The sheep that were killed were in the immediate vicinity of the cross. "It is hard to take that years of successful breeding work have been destroyed in one fell swoop," Christian and Ruedy Wolf, owners of some of the sheep that were killed, were quoted as saying in the press release.

"We are relentlessly at the mercy of such natural events and their forces. Even if this is difficult for us at the moment, we have to accept it," added Hansruedi Britschgi, who owned the remaining dead sheep.

The sheep were recovered by helicopter and burned, the farmers' association continued. The heavy thunderstorm on Monday also damaged infrastructure and cultivated land.

Cattle, sheep and horses killed after lightning strikes in Galway, Ireland

A number of cattle, sheep, and horses were killed when lightning struck a high voltage line in a field near Gort in Co. Galway recently.

Fianna Fáil councillor in Galway County Council, Gerry Finnerty told Agriland that there were seven cattle, several sheep, and three horses across two farms that were killed as a result.

The councillor in the Gort-Kinvara area said: "The pylon fire could be seen from miles around.

"There was a lot of brightness from the lightning as well."

In a statement to Agriland, the ESB stated: "The overnight lightning strikes that occurred on Sunday into Monday led to damage on the high voltage line between Cashla and Prospect and on pole mounted transformers on the medium voltage network in Galway which led to a series of fuses being blown.

After the hottest day recorded this year in Germany, some parts of the country were hit by heavy thunderstorms and flooding on Tuesday night, with more extreme weather due on Wednesday.

Violent storms with heavy rain and hail plagued parts of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday night.

In Bruchsal, a river overflowed its banks and spread through the old town.

In other states, emergency services reported flooded cellars and streets.

The storms followed a heat wave that brought Germany's hottest day of the year so far, according to preliminary data from the German Weather Service.

Lightning strike kills 2 brothers in Assam, India

In a tragic incident, two brothers lost their lives after being struck by lightning in Assam's Nalbari district on Thursday, reports said.

As per sources, the deceased duo has been identified as Yekat Ali and Jayed Ali.

The tragedy occurred in Nalbari's Barkhetri while the youths were washing the long jute strands in the Brahmaputra waters, sources said.

The deceased siblings hailed from the village of Garighat in Sialmari.
