Lightning strike kills 6 people in eastern China

nnnnnnn
Six people died when a pavilion struck by lightning collapsed in a park in eastern China, DPA reported, citing local authorities, BTA reported.

According to the Changzhou city government, in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, lightning struck the pavilion last night, where several people had earlier taken shelter from the strong thunderstorm, the agency said.

As of this morning, six people have died of their wounds, while ten injured people are in stable condition, authorities added.

The China Meteorological Administration had issued a thunderstorm, hurricane and hail warning for the area around Changzhou, which has a population of about 5.4 million people, as well as other parts of the country.

Local authorities have promised to conduct an investigation and check how secure municipal facilities are. Due to rampant corruption and a lack of structural safety inspections in China, building collapses are common, especially in agricultural areas, DPA noted.

The remnants of Hurricane Debby brought heavy flooding to parts of the Northeast before the storm left the United States and crossed into Canada late Friday night.

The storm spent the better part of a week unleashing tornadoes and flooding, damaging homes and taking lives as it moved up the East Coast after first arriving in Florida as a hurricane. The storm is expected to continue moving northeast.

At least seven people have died related to Debby — four in Florida, including two children, one in Georgia and two in North Carolina. Rockingham's sheriff confirmed to CBS News that a woman was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in Brown Summit, North Carolina.

Some of the worst flash flooding in New York on Friday happened in villages and hamlets in a largely rural area south of the Finger Lakes. First responders launched high-water and helicopter rescues of people trapped in cars and homes in rural New York and Pennsylvania as heavy rain caused intense floods.

More than 167,000 customers were without power across New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont on Friday night, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.

Rare form of 'red lightning' caught on camera over Puerto Rico on August 4

Remote cameras recently captured a rare natural light show in the sky over Puerto Rico. The hauntingly beautiful bursts are called gigantic jets, an uncommon form of lightning that originates in clouds and shoots upwards, high into the atmosphere, rather than down towards the ground.

Cameras operated by the Caribbean Astronomy Society captured the images in the early hours of August 4. While members of the society were reviewing the footage to examine meteors, they instead saw the bright bursts, which lasted for a few seconds. In a Facebook post, the organization said they had received reports of people seeing the jets from several areas of the island.

Flooding in Yemen has left 30 people dead and hundreds displaced, official says

Yemen official says 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding
A Yemeni official said Wednesday that 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding in the southern city of Hodeidah following several days of heavy rains.

Hodeidah Gov. Mugammad Qahim told Houthi rebel-controlled Masirah TV that the floods displaced people from 500 homes. Five people were missing, he said.

Hodeidah, the southwestern city of Taiz, and the northwestern city of Hajjah were all hit hard by floods this week during Yemen's ongoing seasonal rainfall that caused flooding that swept away poorly built homes.

Authorities have not announced a confirmed overall death toll, or given the overall number of people injured or missing.

Yemen's rainy season begins in late March, and rains intensify in July through mid-August.

The U.N.'s humanitarian office in Yemen said Wednesday afternoon that Friday floods in the Maqbnah district in Taiz city killed 15 people, cleared agricultural lands and damaged homes and infrastructure.

Great chaos ensued in the Canadian province of Alberta and at Calgary Airport. A strong hailstorm significantly damaged the terminal building. Tourists claimed that the hail was the size of cricket balls.

The process of cleaning and estimating the damages from the hailstorm, which came with strong gusts of wind, is currently underway in the northern part of Calgary, in the province of Alberta. Meteorologists are still tracking the storm cell. Warnings of dangerous precipitation are still in effect in some regions.

We were pretty scared. Normally, I don't get scared during storms, but even I found myself a little bit like, 'oh, don't stand too close to the windows, said Netanya Winterburn, a resident of the Sage Hill district, as quoted by CBC News.

Broken car windows, dents in roofs, completely destroyed garden furniture, and all kinds of plants - these are the issues that the residents of the area now have to deal with.

Tropical Storm Debby drenches Georgia and South Carolina with rain, high water - foot of rainfall in 24 hours

Tropical Storm Debby drenched coastal cities in Georgia and South Carolina, stirred up tornadoes and submerged streets with waist-high floodwaters Tuesday, just the beginning of a prolonged storm that could dump staggering rain totals of up to 25 inches (64 centimeters).

Charleston and Savannah, Georgia, took the first blow, with up to a foot (30 centimeters) of rain falling along the coast between the two cities in just over 24 hours. Police blocked all roads into Charleston's downtown peninsula to everyone but essential workers and emergency personnel. Dozens of roads were closed in the historic city because of flooding similar to what it sees several times a year because of rising sea levels.

As Debby swirls just offshore, the heavy rain is expected to move north into parts of South and North Carolina that have already seen two billion-dollar floods in eight years.

In one Savannah neighborhood, firefighters used boats to evacuate some residents and waded through floodwaters to deliver bottled water and other supplies to those who refused to leave.
