A series of strong earthquakes - the strongest two measuring 6.3 - has struck the North Pacific Ocean near Alaska's Adak Island, seismologists say. No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The first earthquake happened at 9:57 a.m. local time on Sunday when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Adak Island, which is part of the Andreanof Islands group of the Aleutian Islands.

Adak Island, with a population of about 300 people, is nearly 1,200 miles southwest of Anchorage.

After several aftershocks, a second 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit the same area at 3:15 p.m. local time. This was followed by another series of aftershocks, including a 6.1 at 3:38 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northern California, according to the US Geological Survey.

A tsunami warning was initially issued along the coasts of both northern California and southern Oregon - an area that includes about 4.7 million people - but was later rescinded.

The earthquake's epicentre hit closest to the town of Ferndale, California, a small city in Humboldt County about 260 miles (418km) north of San Francisco.

Local officials said no deaths or major widespread damage had been reported in the aftermath of the quake, which is one of only nine such 7 magnitude quakes to strike globally this year.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 hit the area near the west coast of Honshu, Japan. There have been no reports of damage to buildings.

The magnitude was released by the US Survey and Geological Agency (USGS) at 20.47 WIB, Tuesday, November 26.

Meanwhile, the European-Mediterania Seismological Center said the Japanese earthquake magnitude was 6.2 on a richter scale.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8 km (5 miles).

"No tsunami warning has been issued," reported the Japanese public publisher agency NHK.

There have been no reports of any damage.

Earthquake 6.6 magnitude on the east coast of Papua New Guinea

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the east coast of Papua New Guinea this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at a depth of 51 kilometers (32 miles) underwater and about 123 kilometers (76 miles) from the nearest town of Kokopo.

Authorities did not issue a tsunami warning.

Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of intense tectonic activity.

6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Cuba after hurricanes and blackouts

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Cuba on Sunday, after weeks of hurricanes and blackouts that have left many on the island reeling.

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Bartolomé Masó, Cuba, according to a report by the United States Geological Survey.

The rumbling was felt across the eastern stretch of Cuba, including in bigger cities like Santiago de Cuba. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Residents in Santiago, Cuba's second largest city, were left shaken on Sunday. Yolanda Tabío, 76, said people in the city flocked to the streets and were still nervously sitting in their doorways. She said she felt at least two aftershocks following the quake, but that among friends and family she hadn't heard of any damages.

Shallow 6.0 magnitude earthquake strikes off Oregon coast; no tsunami expected, officials say

A preliminary magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Wednesday afternoon off the southern coast of Oregon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 1:15 p.m., according to the USGS. Its epicenter was located about 170 miles west of Bandon and 250 miles west-southwest of Salem, at a depth of 6 miles.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was not expected.

A person who answered the phone at the front desk of the Best Western Inn at Face Rock, in Bandon, said the quake was not felt there.

The USGS initially measured the quake's magnitude as 6.1 before it was downgraded to 6.0.
