The mayor of a picturesque French village has threatened to call in the army to seal it off from a tide of New Age fanatics and UFO watchers, who are convinced it is the only place on Earth to be spared Armageddon in 2012.Bugarach, population 189, is a peaceful farming village in the Aude region, southwestern France and sits at the foot of the Pic de Bugarach, the highest mountain in the Corbières wine-growing area.
But in the past few months, the quiet village has been inundated by groups of esoteric outsiders who believe the peak is an "alien garage".
According to them, extraterrestrials are quietly waiting in a massive cavity beneath the rock for the world to end, at which point they will leave, taking, it is hoped, a lucky few humans with them.
Most believe Armageddon will take place on December 21, 2012, the end date of the ancient Maya calendar, at which point they predict human civilisation will come to an end. Another favourite date mentioned is 12, December, 2012. They see Bugarach as one of perhaps several "sacred mountains" sheltered from the cataclysm.
"This is no laughing matter," Jean-Pierre Delord, the mayor, told
The Daily Telegraph.
Comment: It is clear that the camera was not mounted on a tripod as is claimed in the text. The cameraman reveals this at about 1:00 by saying: "Look at my screen, but don't touch me, look at my screen."
This video most probably doesn't show an authentic UFO but a regular star.
Most probably, the used video camera was set to a very long shutter speed (long exposure time in each frame). This is a common function of video cameras which allows for collecting more light while filming dark scenes. Compare the effect with this and this amateur video on youtube.
The "worms" that can be seen are then the result of tiny hand/camera movements which are integrated over time by the camera in each video frame. Because the video frames last very long -- about half a second in this example -- this allows for a lot of hand movement, hence the long "worms".
The main evidence for camera/hand movements can be seen in the first 5 seconds of the video, as well as from 5:12 to 5:15. You can see that in each consecutive video frame, the orange light on the left of the screen has the exact same 'wormlike' shape as the star he is zooming in.
The various colors are caused by chromatic abberation of the starlight caused by the atmosphere. This video illustrates this by means of the star Sirius.
