One Year on, 'Ghosts' Stalk Japan's Tsunami City

Image

A year after whole neighbourhoods full of people were killed by the Japanese tsunami, rumours of ghosts swirl in Ishinomaki as the city struggles to come to terms with the awful tragedy.

One reconstruction project appears stalled because of fears the undead spirits of those who perished last March will bring bad luck.

"I heard people working to repair the store became sick because of ghosts," Satoshi Abe, 64, said, gesturing to a half-repaired supermarket.

"People died everywhere, here and there. The city is full of such stories," he said.

In some parts of this once vibrant fishing port, signs of life are returning -- houses are being rebuilt, businesses are re-opening and children are back at school.

But with around a fifth of the 19,000 who died across the northeast having lost their lives in this small city alone, few think it can ever be normal again.

Banstead, UK - A taxi ride home on Valentine's night turned into a nightmare when a family were confronted by a terrifying apparition that looked and moved like the legendary Spring Heeled Jack.

Scott Martin and his family were travelling home by taxi from Stoneleigh on Tuesday, February 14, at about 10.30pm when they saw a mysterious 'dark figure with no features' dart across the road in front of them before leaping 15ft over a roadside bank as they approached Nescot College on the Ewell bypass.

Spooked by their seemingly supernatural experience the couple's four-year-old son, Sonny, was too scared to sleep on his own that night, while the petrified taxi driver admitted he didn't want to drive back alone.

Mysterious 'Dog-Headed Pig Monster' Terrorizes Africa

Monster
© Life's Little Mysteries

Residents in northern Namibia, on the southwest coast of Africa, have reported being terrorized by a bizarre dog-pig hybrid creature. The animal is said to be mostly white and unlike anything the villagers have ever seen, with a doglike head and the broad, round, nearly hairless back and shoulders of a giant pig. The beast was spotted chasing and attacking dogs, goats and other domestic animals in this arid region not far from the Kalahari desert.

As often happens when rumors of monsters spread in rural areas around the world, some locals have taken extra safety precautions, such as traveling in groups and arming themselves with weapons. In 1995 and 1996, some Puerto Ricans armed themselves against the vampire beast el chupacabra; last year, Malaysian residents patrolled the streets searching for the mysterious orang minyak, or "oily man" creature that had recently terrorized them.

What could this monster be? One Namibian official, regional councilor Andreas Mundjindi, was quoted in Informante newspaper as saying, "This is an alien animal that the people have not seen before. We don't have a forest here, only bushes. So, this must be black magic at play." Some people in the area trace the beast to one old man rumored to be a warlock or witch doctor, suggesting it's his pet (or, what witch-hunters hundreds of years ago would have called a "familiar").

Brown Mountain Lights, Mysterious Orbs In North Carolina, Are Decades-old Mystery

Image
Dan Caton, left, an astromony professor at Appalachian State University and Lee Hawkins, right, at the Wiseman's View Overlook, near Linville, N.C., June 22, 2005.
Raleigh, N.C. - Two orange orbs, just about 10 feet off the ground, floated past Steve Woody and his father as they hunted deer more than 50 years ago. The mysterious lights passed them, then dropped down the side of a gorge in the Blue Ridge foothills.

For at least a century, the Brown Mountain Lights have confounded residents and tourists in a rugged patch of Burke County, bobbing and weaving near a modest peak. Are they reflections from automobile headlights? Brush fires? A paranormal phenomenon, or something natural not yet explained by science?

"I didn't feel anything spooky or look around for Martians or anything like that," Woody said. "It was just a unique situation. It's just as vivid now as when I was 12 years old."

Whatever the explanation, tourism officials are hoping all those decades of unanswered questions add up to a boost in visitors making their way to scenic outlooks around Linville Gorge with the goal of spotting something mysterious.

US - Hawaii: Puna area on Hawaii Island shaken by mysterious force

Civil Defense says a number of agencies have no explanation for "quake" before 9 a.m.

A noisy, unexplained shaking in the Puna area of Hawaii Island remains a mystery at this time, but it certainly has the area talking.

A number of people in a triangular area between Seaview Estates, Leilani Estates, and Black Sand Beach Subdivision report hearing a thunder-like sound, or an explosion, and feeling the ground shake around 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Folks leaving comments on the popular Punaweb forum are saying it happened around 8:42 a.m.

Ireland: Mysterious night time noise plagues Derry

People in Derry are being plagued by a mysterious noise coming from the air, it has been claimed.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey says scores of people are being kept awake by unexplained activity in the night sky - and the noise it creates.

He says if it is caused by police or military activity then the authorities must offer an explanation.

"I have received a number of calls from concerned residents who have been unsettled and whose sleeping pattern is being affected by what can only be described as a relentless and disturbing buzzing noise in the Derry sky over recent days," he says.

"There has been an issue regarding the use of the PSNI Helicopter that has been frequently deployed which has caused annoyance, and I have been in contact with the Police Air Support Unit to ascertain some information in respect of the deployment of the helicopter.

Michigan, US: With unexplained strength, grandson lifts car off man

Image
© Bryan BoschAustin Smith, 15, rescued his grandfather, Ernie Monhollen, by lifting the 1991 Buick Century that had fallen on him while the pair worked on the car Saturday. The two were trying to fix the brakes and Mr. Monhollen was pinned under the car. “I knew what I had to do,” Austin said of the emergency situation. “I knew if I tried to jack it up, it would take too long.”
When the car slipped off the blocks and fell on top of 74-year-old Ernie Monhollen, he figured the end was coming.

"I knew I was gone," Mr. Monhollen said. "If I would have been there by myself, I would have died. I know it."

But he wasn't alone. With him was his 15-year-old grandson Austin Smith, who found the strength to lift up that Buick and allow the man he calls "Papa" to crawl out. His injuries were severe, but he was alive.

"It happened very fast," said Austin, a freshman at Ida High School. "I just reacted. There was nothing else I could do."

It's an incredible story of family, faith and a burst of mysterious strength tied together with "ifs": If Austin hadn't been dropped off that Saturday morning at his grandparents' home on Todd Rd., if Mr. Monhollen hadn't discovered a leak under the car or if Austin had panicked, the outcome could have been much, much different.

UK: Is Mystery Figure in White a Ghost?

An artist has asked Thanet Extra readers to help him solve a spooky mystery.

Malcolm Baker contacted us after a spotting a figure dressed in white on a photo he took of Kingsgate Castle in Broadstairs.

The figure is standing looking out to sea, close to chalets below the castle in Kingsgate Bay Road, on a day when Mr Baker insists there were very few people around. He is convinced the figure is that of a nurse in 1950s uniform, carrying a tray, although there have been reports of a ghostly nun, also dressed in white, on the beach below.

Mr Baker said: "There might be a totally innocent explanation, but it was very strange.

"It was a really horrible cold and wet day in December 2010, and I went to take the photos as I wanted to paint a picture of the castle.

"I made a note of the fact that there was no-one around at all because of the weather.

"I took three photos in very quick succession and the figure only appears in one.

"If it had been someone standing outside the chalets, especially dressed in bright white clothing at that time of year, I am in no doubt I would have noticed, even if it was briefly. I didn't see anyone at the time, it was only recently when I got the photos out to start on the painting again.

"There is a fence near the chalets but it appears that the figure is further forward."

Ireland: Spooky goings on at Limerick's Milk Market

Limerick Milk Market
© Limerick LeaderCCTV footage at the Milk Market appears to show a strange white image
Something very spooky is happening in Limerick's 200-year-old Milk Market.

Strange, glowing lights have been captured on one of the market's 15 CCTV cameras, which some believe are ghostly spirits, or 'orbs', and which management have described as something that "defies logic".

The footage emerged when staff handed over tapes from their CCTV cameras to Gardai after the market was broken into in the early hours of Friday, January 27.

When staff themselves studied the footage, strange luminous lights were clearly visible from 4am on one particular camera, camera six, which is located in the arch above the main gate into the market, which itself has original stone work from when it was built in 1792 by the Pery family.
