What was the MoD's take on UFOs?

Most intelligence officers were deeply sceptical about UFOs but saw the need to cover all bases

Britain's defence intelligence agency considered the possibility of alien craft visiting Earth and asked "UFO desk officers" to monitor any potential threat from outer space, hitherto top secret documents released on Thursday show.

Thousands of pages of highly classified files document how officials in the Ministry of Defence were worried they would be accused by the public of not taking UFOs seriously enough, and how some thought there really could be someone out there. "It was important to appreciate that what is scientific 'fact' today may not be true tomorrow," a defence intelligence officer warned in August 1993.

He pointed out: "It was only a few hundred years ago that 'scientists' believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe." He added: "It was generally agreed until early this century that the atom could not be split."

Sightings of alleged UFOs could be explained by very strange-shaped clouds, ball lightning, or US "black" (secret project) aircraft, the unidentified official suggested.

The UFO Files: Alien sightings in Britain

UFO sightings have been reported in dozens of locations across Britain, with silver suited "faceless humanoids" in West Wales and suspicious-looking "men in black" in Lincolnshire, according to Ministry of Defence documents.

The documents, published by the National Archives for the first time today, detail a bizarre list of weird and wonderful alien sightings.

They include abductions, shape-shifting objects at a Chelsea football ground and one report from a 1950s pilot who said his experience of a "brightly illuminated object" had been accepted as "quite routine".

The 6,700 pages of documents, compiled by the Ministry of Defence in relation to UFOs and extraterrestrials, have now been published online.

One describes a host of alien sighting in West Wales during 1977, with local MP Nicholas Edwards complaining he had been "inundated" with reports from constituents.

Lights in the sky over Michigan, U.S. cause 9-1-1 calls

Petoskey - Late Tuesday, John Cassidy and his wife, Jackie, were sitting around the fire pit in their backyard on Howard Road in Petoskey when they saw something strange in the night sky.

"When we first saw the lights it looked like the moon coming up and I could see it through the trees to the east," John said.

But it wasn't the moon.

"Within about 30 seconds the light caught my attention and I noticed it had moved, so I commented to Jackie that it's not the moon, and we got up to walk 30 feet to the clearing and we could see it unobstructed to the east, still moving north. We could see a long bright orange glow, resembling fireworks or an orange flare. The glow didn't last long and when the glare went away we could see two objects with whitish flashing lights, a fast flash," John said.

John said a "flare-like" light again appeared from the area near one of the lights.

It happened twice and the lights continued to travel across the sky heading north until they were out of sight. There was no sound.

Baltic Sea object: Could it be a top-secret lost Nazi weapon?

Divers exploring a 'UFO-shaped' object in the Baltic sea say that the strange, curved object might be a Nazi device lost beneath the waves since the end of the Second World War.

Sonar scans have shown that the device, raised 10ft above the seabed and measuring 200ft by 25ft, could be the base of an anti-submarine weapon.

The weapon was built with wire mesh which could have baffled submarine radar, leading enemy craft to crash - much in the same way as turning out a lighthouse could be used as a weapon against shipping.

But now former Swedish naval officer and WWII expert Anders Autellus has revealed that the structure - measuring 200ft by 25ft - could be the base of a device designed to block British and Russian submarine movements in the area.

MOD classified documents: Secret military probe UFO abduction claim

Scotland - UFO investigators launched a top-level probe into claims two men were abducted by aliens in the Capital.

The legendary story told by Garry Wood and Colin Wright, who said they were examined by extraterrestrials after their van was ambushed by a flying saucer, is being turned into a film starring Billy Boyd.

But rather than being dismissed at the time as
Hollywood fantasy, the 1992 incident was taken seriously enough to be investigated by the Ministry of Defence.

Garry, then a 33-year-old ambulance technician from Edinburgh, was driving a car to Tarbrax, South Lanarkshire, accompanied by Colin, 25.

The classified documents - released today - state that Garry "was driving along the A70 when the object dropped a curtain of white light in front of the car".

If you saw something strange in the skies over Tulsa County on Sunday, you weren't alone.

On July 8th at roughly 6:45 p.m., a man saw a cigar-shaped object racing across the sky, moving from north to south.

He said it then disappeared into the clouds, and he's sure it wasn't an airplane.

Roger Peacock with the Oklahoma chapter of the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, says they get reports of about 8 to 10 sightings per month that merit further investigation.

The mystery of unidentified flying objects in the skies above the Nambucca Valley has taken another turn - with a strange, large shape spotted and photographed near Bowraville.

Macksville's Dean Hillery contacted the Guardian after witnessing a stunning aerial opera.

Electrician Dean said he was working in Hillview Drive in Bowraville, and while walking to his van to get some gear, noticed an object over the mountains.

"The photos do it no justice, as it was huge," he said.

"It was there for a good half an hour and it was changing shape/size and going up and down to the tree tops.

An archive detailing government briefings on unidentified flying objects (UFOs) including one sighting above Chelsea football club has been released by British officials.

The 25 files released by The National Archives include "a lengthy briefing on UFO policy to then prime minister Tony Blair's office" along with a job description for the post of UFO desk officer, described as the "weirdest job in Whitehall".

According to a former employee of the UFO desk, which closed in 2009, the perception that it consisted of "top secret teams of specialist scientists scurrying around the country in a real life version of the X-Files" was "total fiction".

Instead, daily duties included providing briefings on the ministry of defence's position on UFOs, undertaking UFO investigations, handling freedom of information requests and managing UFOlogists (UFO "experts").

The stranger investigations included one into a UFO sighting by a police officer at Chelsea football club in London and another into a visit by three "men in black" to a person who reported a UFO encounter in Lincolnshire, east England.

Fast-moving triangle UFO races across Denver sky

On July 8, 2012, a fast-moving triangle UFO was recorded as it briskly raced across the dark night sky above Denver at 12:23 a.m.. The resulting video lasts 39 seconds, and it shows the unidentified flying object flying across a star-filled sky. The object has the three points of light on its underside that are typical of triangle UFOs. The video was posted online by a YouTube user who goes by the name magnetvortex.

Sightings of triangle UFOs, or black triangles, are not uncommon. Just one day earlier, a black triangle UFO was recorded in Moscow at 12:24 a.m. In May, 2012, a video surfaced online that showed a triangle UFO gliding in the blue skies above the trees somewhere in York, England while another witness recorded a triangle in the sunny skies of Sydney, Australia.
