A Shotgun for Blood Clots

Blocked Artery
© Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired EngineeringOpen up. This view of a blocked mouse artery shows illuminated nanoparticles accumulating around the clot.
Think of it as Liquid-Plumr for the circulatory system. Researchers have designed a clump of tiny particles that rides the current of the bloodstream, seeks out life-threatening blood clots, and obliterates them. The approach works in mice and could soon move on to human trials.

Blood clots are bad news for the brain, heart, and other organs. These masses of blood cells can grow big enough to choke off veins and arteries, preventing oxygen from flowing to critical organs. One of the chief obstacles to dealing with blood clots is finding where they have lodged in the body. Even if doctors locate clots, they're hard to get rid of. Doctors often prescribe blood thinners that slow down the time it takes a clot to form, but such medication can also cause excessive bleeding. Another method is stenting, a procedure in which a flexible wire or tube is used to reopen a vessel. Patients recover quickly but often spend at least 1 night in the hospital.

Looking for a better approach, biomedical engineer Donald Ingber of Harvard University and colleagues turned to nanoparticles. Modeled after platelets - cells that circulate in the blood and help stop bleeding by forming clots - the nanoparticles are less than 100 nm wide and made of synthetic polymers stuck together like a ball of wet sand. Like platelets, clumps of the particles flow freely in the blood and gravitate toward blocked vessels by sensing a change in blood flow. Once there, they break apart into individual particles that stick to the clot, releasing a drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) that dissolves it.

Scientists Sue Merck: Allege Fraud for MMR Vaccine

Fraud
© GreenMedInfo
Vaccinationists tell us we don't understand science. Well maybe they are right. "Science" in the world of vaccines could mean, throwing out results that don't fit the desired outcome, throwing out the evidence before the FDA comes to inspect, offering bonuses to scientists to deliver the necessary results ...I was the head technician in a biochemistry lab for two years prior to medical school, yet I never saw science carried out like that. Maybe Temple University was just a bit behind the times in its evolution of "science."

This is the story of the MMR vaccine and two Merck scientists who filed a lawsuit in 2010 over Merck's efforts to allegedly "defraud the United States through Merck's ongoing scheme to sell the government a mumps vaccine that is mislabeled, misbranded, adulterated and falsely certified as having an efficacy rate that is significantly higher than it actually is." Merck allegedly did this from 2000 onwards in order to maintain its exclusive license to sell the MMR vaccine and keep its monopoly of the US market.

Folks, if you haven't already heard this elsewhere, this is HUGE news. HERE is Hilary Butler's excellent account of the ordeal as well as both the 2010 and 2012 official legal complaints.

In the complaint, the scientists outline in great detail exactly how Merck manipulated the efficacy results in order to be able to say they had a 95% effective vaccine so that they could meet the fairytale goal of vaccine-induced "herd immunity by 2010." Well, it turns out that the vaccine could not meet the goal that CDC projected to eradicate mumps by 2010, BECAUSE the vaccine, in its current state cannot reliably confer immunity, and is in fact a dilute version of what it once was when Maurice Hilleman invented it using the virus of his five year old daughter. The same viral mumps strain has been in use in every mumps or MMR vaccine Merck has made since 1967.

Agency Warning on MMS and CDS Solutions

The Food Standards Agency is renewing its warning that Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) should not be consumed. A similar product, Chlorine Dioxide Solution (CDS), should also be avoided.

Miracle Mineral Solution, also known as Miracle Mineral Supplement, is sold as an oral supplement. MMS is a 28% sodium chlorite solution, which is equivalent to industrial-strength bleach. When taken as directed it could cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure. If the solution is diluted less than instructed, it could cause damage to the gut and red blood cells, potentially resulting in respiratory failure.

Although CDS is a more dilute product and not as potentially dangerous as MMS, it could irritate and damage the skin and gastrointestinal tract if swallowed. Other similar products containing chlorine solutions in varying strengths are available. These should also be avoided.

MMS, CDS and similar products are available via the internet. The Agency has reminded local authorities that these products should not be on sale. Anyone who is aware of these products being sold in retail outlets should notify their local authority trading standards department. Contact details of local authorities can be found using the link below.

Anyone who has any of these products should throw them away. If someone has consumed MMS, CDS or similar products and feels unwell, they should consult their doctor.

5 Reasons to Avoid Plastic Containers

Image
© istock.com
The great American novelist Normal Mailer once said, "I sometimes think that there is a malign force loose in the universe that is the social equivalent of cancer, and it's plastic. It infiltrates everything. It's metastasis. It gets into every single pore of productive life." You would think this was a recent quote, something he might have said after the green movement became popular. But no - he said this in 1983, before America's obsession with everything plastic was even close to reaching its peak. What amazing foresight he had.

Plastic has its role in modern society. It's an essential part of our cars, computers, mobile phones, children's toys - and practically most everything we use on a day-to-day basis. But there's one place where plastic has worn out its welcome - and that's as a container for the food we eat and the water we drink.

The bottom line is that plastic is made from toxic materials. It's a known fact that these toxins can leach into whatever they come into contact with. And it's a known fact that when the compounds that make up plastic are ingested, they damage your body on a cellular level and cause health problems.

What Does It Mean to Be Fat-Adapted?

fat adapted
When describing someone that has successfully made the transition to the Primal way of eating I often refer to them as "fat-adapted" or as "fat-burning beasts". But what exactly does it mean to be "fat-adapted"? How can you tell if you're fat-adapted or still a "sugar-burner"? I get these and related questions fairly often, so I thought I'd take the time today to attempt to provide some definitions and bring some clarification to all of this. I'll try to keep today's post short and sweet, and not too complicated. Hopefully, med students and well-meaning but inquisitive lay family members alike will be able to take something from it.

As I've mentioned before, fat-adaptation is the normal, preferred metabolic state of the human animal. It's nothing special; it's just how we're meant to be. That's actually why we have all this fat on our bodies - turns out it's a pretty reliable source of energy! To understand what it means to be normal, it's useful examine what it means to be abnormal. And by that I mean, to understand what being a sugar-dependent person feels like.

A sugar-burner can't effectively access stored fat for energy. What that means is an inability for skeletal muscle to oxidize fat. Ha, not so bad, right? I mean, you could always just burn glucose for energy. Yeah, as long as you're walking around with an IV-glucose drip hooked up to your veins. What happens when a sugar-burner goes two, three, four hours without food, or - dare I say it - skips a whole entire meal (without that mythical IV sugar drip)? They get ravenously hungry. Heck, a sugar-burner's adipose tissue even releases a bunch of fatty acids 4-6 hours after eating and during fasting, because as far as it's concerned, your muscles should be able to oxidize them (PDF). After all, we evolved to rely on beta oxidation of fat for the bulk of our energy needs. But they can't, so they don't, and once the blood sugar is all used up (which happens really quickly), hunger sets in, and the hand reaches for yet another bag of chips.

Belviq- Lose Very Little Weight and Gain Lots of Nasty Side Effects

Image
Lose very little weight, and gain lots of nasty side effects!

FDA has just approved a new weight loss drug called Belviq. It's the first new prescription drug for long-term weight loss to enter US in over a decade. As we noted in February, the pharmaceutical industry is desperate for new blockbuster drugs. The patents on their biggest money-making drugs are expiring, which will cause drug prices and profits to plummet when generic versions become available, so the drug-makers are in a frenzy to find a new pill for a mass market.

Whether Belviq is that golden ticket is in serious doubt. First off, the weight loss it achieves is extremely modest - only 47% of patients lost more than 5% of their body weight over a year's time, with the average patient losing between 3% and 3.7%. In other words, if you weighed 200 pounds, you might lose about seven pounds over the course of a year.

Then there are the acknowledged side effects: depression, migraines, memory lapses, and attention disturbances. But for some reason, FDA thinks the benefits of taking an expensive pill to lose a tiny bit of weight outweigh the crippling headaches, mental problems, and depression. Hey, maybe they can add an antidepressant in there and make it a "two-fer"! That is exactly what they did with another diet drug, Contrave, which has not yet been approved.

Comment: A far better way to lose weight while improving health would be to eat a gluten/casein free diet, low in carbohydrates.

Vitamin C Mops Up the Nuclear Age

Image
© vitamincbenefits.org
This is perhaps the most important information since the US dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those bombs opened the terror of the nuclear age and its looming threat of mankind one day being exterminated by radioactive fallout.

That threat is over.

Vitamin C mops up free radicals from radiation and repairs DNA. It has now been proven to protect nuclear-clean up workers at Fukushima. Scientists and doctors in Japan are working to get word out about vitamin C to the public which has been exposed to many, many times higher radiation than at Chernobyl.

Turning Crops, Animals And Even Babies Into Genetic Monsters - What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Image
© Activist Post
The greatest environmental threat that we are facing is genetic modification. All over the globe, scientists are treating the fabric of life as if it was a playground where anything goes. Behind closed doors, scientists all over the planet are creating some of the most freakish and most bizarre monsters that you could possible imagine, and very few people seem concerned about it. But the truth is that messing with the building blocks of life is going to have some very serious consequences.

Scientists claim that they are making our crops stronger, more productive and less vulnerable to insects. Scientists claim that they can alter our animals so that they are more "useful" to us. Scientists claim that genetic modification is only going to "enhance" humanity. But what if something goes seriously wrong?

For example, what if we learn that eating genetically modified food is really, really bad for us? Well, at this point more than 70 percent of the processed foods sold in the United States contain at least one ingredient that has been genetically modified. It would be kind of hard to go back now. We have rushed ahead and have created hordes of freakish genetic monsters without ever seriously considering the consequences. Someday, future generations may look back on us and wonder how we could have ever been so incredibly foolish.

Mainstream Media and Medical Journals Pushing ADHD Drugs for Six-year-olds

Image
© blogs.psychcentral.com
There is a fresh agenda afoot to begin diagnosing children as young as six years of age with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and drugging them with dangerous medications like Ritalin (methylphenidate), Adderall (dextroamphetamine and amphetamine), and Prozac (fluoxetine). And the mainstream media seems to be working lockstep with medical journals to create the illusion that doing this is vital for childhood health and development.

A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics, and promoted by ABC News, for instance, suggests that the earlier a child is diagnosed with ADHD, the more likely he or she is to get better grades in school. Waiting too long to get diagnosed, in other words, can cause children with ADHD to have more educational troubles, say the authors.

Aspirin Allergy May Translate To Food Allergies

HLA-II linked Aspirin / Salicylic Acid Allergy: How Common is it in Gluten Sensitivity?

"A baby aspirin a day keeps the doctor away!" Sounds familiar?

Estimates vary, but it appears, for instance, that each year we consume around 40,000 metric tons of aspirin, equating to about 120 billion aspirin tablets (300 mg is a standard size).[1]

So, forty thousand tons later, shouldn't our public state of health be better? The above statement may be far from the truth about aspirin keeping the doctor away; and the forty thousand metric tons of aspirin consumed annually clearly do not appear to work either.

(For a historical overview and more than 180 research listings on aspirin click here)

Many individuals have reported new health challenges and allergies after starting treatment with aspirin. While salicylic acid is the main metabolite of aspirin, this willow bark-derived substance proves also to cross-react with birch pollen.
