Peaks Island residents discovered a dead whale on the shore Saturday morning.

"It is a minke whale," Sgt. Matt Wyman of the Maine Marine Patrol said. The agency is assisting Marine Mammals of Maine in getting to the island so officials can do sampling that will determine what happened to the whale, Wyman said. Minke whales are common in Maine, he said.

Mary Collari said she, her daughter and their dogs were out early Saturday for a walk along the shore. "I saw a large number of golf carts pulling over" and a small crowd had gathered, she said.

When Collari got closer, she saw the dead whale, which appeared to be about 20 feet long. "It's sad," she said. "It's right on the shore on the southern part of Peaks Island."

The mood of the crowd was somber, she said. "A lot of people there were quiet ... respect for this magnificent animal."

Heavy rain pounded parts of western Honshu and the Kyushu region on Saturday, with record-breaking hourly precipitation reported in several locations, causing one fatality and leaving two others missing, local authorities and the weather agency said.

The Meteorological Agency on Sunday continued to warn of the danger of landslides and flooding in low-lying areas, as well as the rising and overflowing of rivers in Kyushu, especially its southern areas, due to possible heavy rainfall through Monday.

The agency said a weather front that is expected to stay near Kyushu over Monday will see warm and moist air flowing toward it, making the atmospheric conditions very unstable.

2023's lack of noctilucent clouds 'may be due to solar maximum'

2023 has not been a good year for noctilucent clouds (NLCs). First, NASA's iconic AIM spacecraft broke, losing power when its main battery failed. We could no longer see noctilucent clouds from space. Next, the clouds themselves failed.

"As we have have passed Summer Solstice, the NLC season still has not started for me," laments Ruslan Merzlyakov, who usually photographs many NLCs from his home in Jutland, Denmark. "I made this new film to share my experience trying to photograph them."

NLCs are clouds of frosted meteor smoke. They form every year in summer when wisps of water vapor rise up to the edge of space. At altitudes greater than 80 km, the water crystallizes around disintegrated meteoroids, forming electric-blue structures visible in the night sky.

Comment: Whatever is causing NLC's to be absent, there does indeed appear to be a significant shift occurring on our planet, and beyond:

Unseasonable rain continues to fall across Australia's north, helping lower temperatures to near-record levels

Unseasonable rain continues to fall across Australia's north in what's meant to be the region's dry season, helping lower temperatures to near-record levels.

The surprise soaking is forecast to last at least another five days, gradually shifting from the Kimberley and Northern Territory this weekend, to Queensland and New South Wales next week.

Here's what's going on.

Why is it raining in the dry season?

The cause of the rare winter rains can be traced back to two pools of cold polar air, which earlier this week moved north through WA and caused a dramatic change in the winds blowing over Australia.

These rivers of winds are known as jet streams, which blow about 10 kilometres above the earth's surface and form the boundary between relatively warm and cold air.
