As many as four districts of Andhra Pradesh namely, Vizianagaram, Guntur, Srikakulam and Prakasam districts, reported highest number of deaths due to lightning. Despite new technologies, programmes and alerts,
lightning continues to claim up to 80 lives in the state every year. Majority of these death were reported in rural pockets and only five to six percent deaths were reported in urban settings.
As per the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), 544 persons were killed due to lightning between 2017 and 2023 in AP. The data said that Vizianagaram, Guntur, Srikakulam and Prakasam district were the worst-affected regions with highest number of thunderbolt deaths.
Between 2017 and 2023, lightning claimed 98 lives in Vizianagaram district. This was followed by 80 deaths in Guntur, 66 in Srikakulam and 65 in Prakasam district. Most lightning-related deaths were recorded in rural areas involving farmers, cattle grazers, fishermen, agriculture labourers, and children. This apart, lightning also kill wild animals and livestocks, cause substantial damages to properties and injure people and animals trapped in the damaged properties.
