Flooding shuts roads in central Sweden

Updated: Sections of the highway in Värmland have been closed off due to flooding, and several trains are standing still. Authorities say the situation will get worse before it gets better.

Rain continued to bucket down over parts of Sweden on Wednesday night, adding the town of Kristinehamn, Värmland, to the list of towns partially under water.

"We got an alarm that a man was stuck in a car in more than metre-high water," Lars Eidwall, emergency service worker in Kristinehamn, told news agency TT. "When we arrived he had managed to climb out, but the car was filled with water."

Heavy rain during the night closed several roads in Kristinehamn, including parts of major highway E18.

Words of sympathy and support: Putin extends condolences to Japan Prime Minister over Hiroshima landslides victims

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences Wednesday to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe over numerous victims as a result of landslides in Hiroshima Prefecture.

"The head of the Russian State has expressed his words of sympathy and support to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those, injured as a result of this catastrophe," a statement on the Kremlin website read.

According to the latest media reports, 39 people were killed in landslides, including a two-year-old child and several teenagers aged between 11 and 16. Seven people are unaccounted for.

Around 1.000 small earthquakes were detected in the Bárðarbunga region from midnight (18/19) until Tuesday evening 19th August at 20:00. All of them were smaller than magnitude 3 and most were located in the cluster east of Bárðarbunga.

While the northern cluster close to Kistufell has calmed down significantly following the M4.5 earthquake on early Monday morning, event rates in the eastern cluster are still high. Similar to recent days, two pulses of comparably strong seismic activity have been measured between 04:00 and 08:00 this morning, as well as 16:00 and 18:30 in the afternoon. The cluster east of Bárðarbunga continued to slowly migrate northeastwards today. Events are still located at around 5-12 km depths, no signs of upwards migration has been seen so far.

Below is a summary map of all manually revised earthquakes since the onset of the swarm, which illustrates the migration of earthquake activity during the last days. Earthquakes in the map are colour coded by time, dark blue dots show the onset of the swarm on Saturday, orange dots Tuesday's events until 19:00, light blue and yellow are the days in between. The time scale is days since the onset of the swarm.

Five waterspouts come ashore in Genoa, Italy - Cause millions of euros' worth of damage and shut down transport network

A series of five tornadoes swept through northern Italy on Tuesday, prompting flights to be diverted and causing millions of euros worth of damage.

The tornadoes hit around the port city of Genoa, with some eyewitnesses stating they came close to hitting the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Flights to the city's airport were diverted and those leaving delayed, while trains were also interrupted and roads closed, La Repubblica reported.

Damage is said to amount to millions of euros, with roofs ripped off buildings in the Prà neighbourhood and the seafront strewn with sun loungers hit by the stormy weather.

Comment: To give you an idea how rare tornadoes are in Italy, four tornadoes in total were recorded in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, three were recorded in the 20th century, four were recorded between 2008, and 2012, four hit in 2013 alone, between 12 and 15 have hit so far this year... and now five have hit in one day!

Note the exponential rate of increase...

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) reports upwards of 30 fin whales along a 50km stretch of the West Cork coastline in southern Ireland, between the Old Head of Kinsale and the Kedge area, which is unusual for this time of year.

Colin Barnes from Cork Whale Watch, who has spent several weeks observing the build-up of this activity confirms there are huge 'fish clouds' comprising small sprat or larval herring in the area and these are likely to be what is attracting the fin whales in such numbers.

Combined estimates from land and boat based sightings suggest there could also be 20 or more fin whales in the waters between Seven Heads and Galley Head, County Cork.

A minke whale spotted bleeding off the coast of Cape Cod on Sunday died and washed ashore at a Truro beach on Monday morning, The Cape Cod Times reported.

According to the report, the whale, estimated to be between 20 and 25 feet long and weigh between three and five tons, was found when volunteers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare Marine Mammal Rescue and Research program went looking for it early on Monday.

Researchers are planning to conduct a necropsy, but have not yet decided whether it will be performed at the scene or whether the whale will be moved to a separate site first.

The report indicated that this is the third minke whale death this season. One died last week near Barnstable Harbor and another died in June near Provincetown.

An 18-foot minke whale was found dead in Barnstable Harbor near Millway Marina Sunday morning, officials said.

The whale was originally spotted Saturday afternoon and monitored by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Barnstable harbormaster, said Michael Booth, a spokesman for fund. The whale was originally seen in the harbor in open water with the ability to swim, so a team from the fund did not make a rescue attempt, Booth said.

On Sunday, the animal was found dead near the marina.

Booth said that the fund was trying to get permission to perform a necropsy on the stranded animal to determine its cause of death, but that it could be days before the results were available. He said he expected the carcass would be removed from the harbor some time on Monday.

This one kilometer long and eight meters deep large trench in the Costa de Hermosillo in Mexico is baffling the inhabitants and officials of La Candelaria. But how did it form?

This crack opened up on August 17, 2014. Although social networkers believe it was created by an earthquake at the San Andres Fault, a geologist from the University of Sonora indicates that the ground has probably collapsed because of a stream of groundwater.

Comment: The robotic quality of the video could be explained by the footage being shot from a drone with a remotely operated camera.

As for a hypothesis; An earthquake may possibly have been involved in this event, which again may key into lowered solar activity and the decrease in the surface to core E-field, which reduces the binding force and loosens the tectonic plates relative to each other. In short: Earth is opening up, which is clear from the high increase in seismic activity observed over the last decade.

An angry rat has been caught on camera trying to attack a straphanger at a New York subway stop.

Dramatic footage filmed by SoHo man Josiah Ryan shows the aggressive rodent charging down the platform at 42nd St. station at Bryant Park in Midtown late Friday night.

It then jumps up, causing him to scream out: "Ah! Oh s--t!"

"Oh my God, man, got it all on video, too," Ryan is heard saying off-camera.

Historically accurate Old Farmer's Almanac predicts 'super-cold' winter for the US this year

The Old Farmer's Almanac, the familiar, 223-year-old chronicler of climate, folksy advice and fun facts, is predicting a colder winter and warmer summer for much of the nation.

Published Wednesday, the New Hampshire-based almanac predicts a "super-cold" winter in the eastern two-thirds of the country. The west will remain a little bit warmer than normal.

"Colder is just almost too familiar a term," Editor Janice Stillman said. "Think of it as a refriger-nation."

More bad news for those who can't stand snow: Most of the Northeast is expected to get more snowfall than normal, though it will be below normal in New England.

Before unpacking the parka, however, remember that "colder than average" is still only about 2 to 5 degrees difference.
