Heavy hailstorm in Mexico City creates a winter wonderland on July 21

mmmm
A powerful hailstorm surprised people in the south of Mexico City on Monday night, leaving streets blanketed in white and children gleefully playing in snow-like piles.

Authorities said emergency crews from various government agencies were deployed to clear blocked drains and tend to the storm's aftermath.

"They (government workers) came by in the morning and supposedly cleaned out the drains, but with all the tree branches, they obviously got clogged again," said one woman speaking to N+.

Though summer storms are common this time of year, the sheer volume of hail was unusual.

Mexico City's Risk Management and Civil Protection agency had published an amber alert warning of heavy rainfall, of between 30 and 49 mm, and hail for Monday evening.

Mexico City's rainy season runs from May to October, with July typically the wettest month.
