Flooding hits Pattaya, Thailand after 2-hour downpour

An afternoon downpour flooded major roads in Pattaya on Wednesday afternoon, with one community particularly hard-hit.

Torrential rain pounded the area for about two hours, causing flooding 30-50 centimetres deep on many roads in the city, including Beach Road.

The hardest hit community was Nong Yai in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri, where the water was about one metre deep, high enough to submerge most of Niyom Kongsan's car.

Mr Niyom said he was trying to drive his car out of the flood and to an alternative street to Sukhumvit Road, but the strong current took control of the vehicle away from him.

Six tornadoes have been confirmed by the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) out of Western University in London, including one near Stratford.

An EF1 tornado caused damage to a farm and trees in Gads Hill with a max wind gust of 150km/h, a path length of 4.2 kilometers and width of 400 metres.

The NTP survey team also found EF0 downburst damage south of Stratford with a path length of 18 kilometres and max winds of 115km/h. An EF0 downburst was also confirmed in the Palmerston - Arthur area. That downburst had a path length of 53 kilometres and max wind of 120 km/h.

The NTP also confirmed an EF1 tornado in Beachville, near Woodstock from the July 19 storms. The EF1 damage was done to trees, with max winds of 150 km/h.

OPP say victim was out picking blueberries on Monday and did not return home, leading to a search for the man.

Ontario Provincial Police say they've found the body of a 67-year-old man who left his Red Lake home to pick blueberries and may have been killed by a bear.

Police, in a release issued on Tuesday, say they killed a black bear located in the vicinity of the body of the man, who left home Monday morning and was in the vicinity of Tuzyk Road off Highway 105.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has been contacted and the bear's remains will be sent to Guelph, Ont. for testing.

The OPP remind the public to be aware of their surroundings while outdoors and if a bear poses an immediate threat through threatening or aggressive behaviour, to immediately call 911 or the local police department.

The fish is sometimes known as the "earthquake fish" as it is sometimes coincidentally seen days before earthquakes strike an area. They were famously spotted in Japan just before the deadly Fukushima earthquake in 2011

A giant deepwater eel-like fish which some bizarrely believe is a sign of an impending earthquake has been filmed washing ashore at a Mexican resort.

The 13ft long oarfish was found by aquaculture engineer Fernando Cavalin and his friend David de Zabedrosky in Baja California's Pichilingue Bay in La Paz on Sunday.

A breathtaking video taken during Wednesday's thunderstorm shows the moment lightning strikes behind the Statue of Liberty.

The 21-second clip posted to Twitter shows dark grey clouds hanging above Lady Liberty, with a massive strike disappearing behind her pedestal. The scene was filmed from a dock on Ellis Island.

An intense thunderstorm with heavy winds rolled through the Big Apple Wednesday afternoon, with the National Weather Service issuing a severe threat for the city and the Lower Hudson Valley between 5 and 9 p.m.

Meteorologists warned the Post of potential for weak tornadoes and widespread flooding in the city before the rain begins to let up around 10 p.m.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rainfall is expected in the city, though as much as 2 inches of rain could drop across the area depending on how fast the system passes overhead.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was detected west of Tofino, British Columbia early Wednesday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) agency, the quake struck 250 kilometres west of Tofino.

Earthquakes Canada's preliminary data identified the quake as a magnitude 4.0 and that it struck in the Gold River region of B.C.

More than 9.6 million people across South Asia have been affected by severe floods, with hundreds of thousands struggling to get food and medicine, officials and aid organizations said Wednesday.

About 550 people have died in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, while millions have been displaced from their homes since the flooding began last month, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC.

The organization warned of a humanitarian crisis, saying that close to one third of Bangladesh has already been flooded, with more flooding expected in the coming weeks. It said that 2.8 million people have been affected, and that more than 1 million are isolated.

Fishermen found a 100 ton dead blue whale stranded and decaying in Kupang Bay, specifically on Na Batu Kepala Beach in Nunhila subdistrict, Alak district, East Nusa Tenggara, on Tuesday afternoon.

The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. The discovery of the 29-meter-long carcass immediately went viral and became a spectacle for thousands of residents of Kupang city and its surrounding areas.

"[We] responded quickly to reports from residents regarding the marine mammal stranded at the beach," Kupang Water Conservation Area Agency (BKKPN) head Ikram Sangadji said on Tuesday.
