Reality v. Garbage

AI image

"The business incentives driving consumer AI development remain fundamentally misaligned with reducing hallucinations."
— The Singularity Hub on "X"
Which is to say, there is Reality, and then there is every other cockamamie aggregate of simulation pretending to represent Reality, i.e. garbage. How many millions among us already subscribe to the latter? Apparently, lots, and they are not evenly distributed these days. You surely know where to look for the un-Reality. The party of men can get pregnant, and all the rest. . . .

Enter A-I to make things worse. Probably a lot worse. We have failed to learn the chief lesson of the computer age, which is that the virtual is not an acceptable substitute for the authentic. So, we plunge deeper into realms of the un-real and the inauthentic. This turns into a quest to get something-for-nothing, and the unfortunate result of that old dodge is that you will end up with nothing, and that is exactly why we are at such a hazardous pass in the human project.

I apologize if the above seems too metaphysical. But that's the scenery en route when a civilization flies up its own wazoo. Novelist Cory Doctorow has nicely labeled this the enshitification of daily life.

Hundreds of prominent Jewish figures across the world have called on the UN and global leaders to impose sanctions on Israel over what they describe as "unconscionable" actions in Gaza that they say amount to genocide.

An open letter urging governments to hold Israel accountable for alleged violations of international law in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem garnered more than 450 signatories, including former Israeli officials, intellectuals, and artists. The letter coincides with reports that EU leaders may abandon plans to introduce sanctions against Israel during a summit in Brussels on Thursday.

The signatories wrote:
"We have not forgotten that so many of the laws, charters, and conventions established to safeguard and protect all human life were created in response to the Holocaust. Those safeguards have been relentlessly violated by Israel."

Mayor Daniel Lurie said that President Donald Trump informed him of the decision after threatening federal immigration enforcement

President Donald Trump has called off a "surge" of federal agents and troops in San Francisco planned for this weekend after speaking with local officials.

"The Federal Government was preparing to 'surge' San Francisco, California, on Saturday, but friends of mine who live in the area called last night to ask me not to go forward with the surge in that the Mayor, Daniel Lurie, was making substantial progress," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday. "I spoke to Mayor Lurie last night, and he asked, very nicely, that I give him a chance to see if he can turn it around."

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie also confirmed the move. He said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reaffirmed that direction in a morning conversation, FOX 2 San Francisco reported.

The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been voted out of the role following comments he made celebrating the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

In a leaked message in a WhatsApp chat, 20-year-old George Abaraonye wrote, "Charlie Kirk got shot, let's (expletive) go," while a story he shared on his Instagram account read, "Charlie Kirk got shot loool."

Members of the influential student union voted in person on Saturday in a motion of no confidence in the incoming president, who will not be allowed to take up the highly prestigious position.

The Oxford Union posted on X on Tuesday morning, "The Motion of No Confidence against Mr. Abaraonye has met the required two-thirds threshold and has therefore passed."

A total of 1,228 members voted for the motion, while 501 members voted against it. The union shared a letter stating that in accordance with its rules, Abaraonye is now "deemed to have resigned."

Louvre heist sparks 'woke' hiring policy backlash

The management of the Louvre Museum has been criticized for prioritizing diversity over competence in key appointments, following a daylight robbery in which the French crown jewels were stolen.

The controversy has centered on the Louvre's security chief, Dominique Buffin, whose appointment was hailed in French media last year as part of a gender-balance drive. Buffin, who previously held posts in the police and the Culture Ministry, became the museum's first female head of security last September after being appointed by director Laurence des Cars, herself the Louvre's first woman to hold the position.

Marion Marechal, a member of the European Parliament and niece of veteran right-wing politician Marine Le Pen, said France had become the "laughingstock of the world" over what she called the "ridiculous theft."

Flashback Old Habits Die Hard: Tommy's Tour of Canada Goes from Bad To Worse

Stephen Lennon with Bethan Nodwell in Canada
A leading figure on the Canadian far-right has publicly accused Stephen Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson) of a drug fueled binge, spending time with sex workers and using his arrest as a way to raise money after embarrassing ticket sales for his tour.

In recent hours explosive allegations about Lennon's activities in Canada have been made by the Canadian far-right activist Bethan Nodwell. Nodwell was one of the organisers of the so-called Freedom Convoy which protested measures to combat COVID-19.

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network has previously exposed how she has denied the Holocaust and claimed that "white identitarianism is inevitable." Despite this, it seems Lennon had a dinner with Nodwell upon his arrival in Montreal that quickly descended into a drug-fuelled bender.

Nodwell claims that while intoxicated Lennon let slip that he was aware he would be arrested and that plans were put in place to raise money to make up for the lack of ticket sales for his speaking tour.

EDL founder and self-styled 'journalist' Tommy Robinson has found himself under scrutiny from supporters who accuse him of misusing donations, The Independent reports.

The news arrives after it emerged that Robinson has declared himself bankrupt even though he'd received hundreds of thousands of pounds in donations and funding.

According to financial documents, Robinson — whose real name is Stephen Lennon — received almost £425,000 in donations from supporters, but former employees have since raised concerns about how the money has been spent, including allegations that Robinson spent donations on cocaine, sex workers and personal debts.

One former employee, a video producer called Caolan Robertson who has since cut ties with Robinson, claims that money he was promised by Robinson for equipment "never materialised". He also said he personally saw Robinson transfer large sums of money from a crowdfunding page into a business account.

Argentinian politician Hernan Damiani, 64, died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack during a live television broadcast. Damiani collapsed just minutes into the show, prompting immediate efforts from fellow guests and hosts to assist him. Among them was former Health Minister Walter Villalba, who attempted resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Damiani was taken to Madariaga Hospital in Posadas, where he was pronounced dead.

Eyewitnesses said Damiani began having difficulty breathing before losing consciousness. Footage from the broadcast appeared to show a fellow guest grabbing his arm just before he fell. The incident occurred during the program Dólar Blue. Following the incident, the show issued a statement urging viewers not to share the footage out of respect for Damiani's family and those present. YouTube removed the video from the broadcaster's channel, but clips have continued to circulate on social media.

Portuguese parliament approves ban on wearing face veils in public spaces

Portugal's parliament has approved a bill banning face veils worn for "gender or religious" reasons in public, in a move seen as targeting the face coverings worn by some Muslim women.

The bill was proposed by the far-right Chega party, and received support from the centre-right PSD, Liberal Initiative and CDS-PP. Left-leaning lawmakers, including from the PS, Livre, PCP and Bloco de Esquerda parties voted against the initiative.

The measure prohibits the "use, in public spaces, of clothing intended to conceal or obstruct the display of the face", as is the case with the burqa — a full-body garment that covers a woman from head to foot — and niqabs — the full-face Islamic veil with space around the eyes.

It also prevents the act of "forcing someone to hide their face for reasons of gender or religion", the parliamentary initiative reads.

US jury finds French bank BNP Paribas liable for damages for enabling Sudan atrocities

A New York jury on Friday found BNP Paribas liable for more than $20 million in damages to three Sudanese refugees, now US citizens, who argued that the French bank helped prop former strongman Omar al-Bashir's regime during its brutal campaigns, conducted by Sudanese soldiers and the Janjaweed militia, against unarmed civilians.

The eight-member jury sided with three plaintiffs originally from Sudan, awarding a total of $20.75 million in damages, after hearing testimony describing horrors committed by Sudanese soldiers and the Janjaweed militia.

The plaintiffs - two men and one woman, all now American citizens - told the federal court in Manhattan that they had been tortured, burned with cigarettes, slashed with a knife, and, in the case of the woman, sexually assaulted.

"I have no relatives left," Entesar Osman Kasher, 41, had testified.
