Police closed off a street in Vancouver and deployed a bomb squad after discovering what appeared to be a pressure cooker in the area, local media reported.

Sgt. Brian Montague said the item appeared to be a pressure cooker but was not deemed dangerous by the Vancouver Police Department Explosives Disposal Unit after an examination and x-ray of the item, local news outlet CKNW reported.

The cooker was determined to be empty and posed no risk to the public. Police are currently working to determine who left the pressure cooker on the street, and why.

Discovery of the item led to the 1200 block of West Broadway being closed and evacuated, according to CBC reporter Tanya Fletcher. Footage posted online showed police vehicles blocking the street while barricades were erected. The street was later re-opened, according to local media reports.

Navy security breach: Private data of 130K US sailors exposed

US Navy
© International Business TimesUS Navy reveals major data breach to servicemen.
The names and social security numbers of over 130,000 current and former US sailors were compromised when a laptop belonging to a Hewlett Packard employee working as a contractor was breached, the Navy revealed. "Oct. 27, 2016, the Navy was notified by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES) that one of the company's laptops operated by their employee supporting a Navy contract was reported as compromised," the Navy said in a statement.

Making the announcement of the breach on Wednesday, the Navy said that the perpetrator has managed to get a hold of sensitive information, including the names and Social Security numbers of 134,386 current and former sailors. The Navy Criminal Investigative Service is now running an investigation into the breach. So far the probe has failed to find any evidence that could suggest misuse of the information that was compromised.

"The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously - this is a matter of trust for our Sailors," Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke said in a statement. "We are in the early stages of investigating and are working quickly to identify and take care of those affected by this breach." The government promised to notify the affected sailors in the coming weeks and is now reviewing credit monitoring service options for affected individuals.

According to the Navy Times, this is the second major reported breach involving the Navy and Hewlett-Packard. In 2013, it was reported that Iran managed to gain access to the unclassified Navy and Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) developed by HP in 2000.

Comment: Another report mentioning the 2013 hacking incident says Iran was blamed (proven?) for a series of cyber attacks launched at Navy computers, only learned of a year later after a private contractor uncovered the theft. What does this say about the Navy's security and how does this reflect on the vulnerability of those in service?

Reddit's Pizzagate page banned

reddit ban
A Reddit page has been taken down in relation to what is now known as "#Pizzagate", which is a series of emails released by Wikileaks in the Podesta leak that are thought to reveal an encoded use of words related to foods, like "pizza" and "hot dogs," which many have reasonably suspect has to do with a pedophile sex ring. This follows on the heels a DMCA takedown notice sent to TheDailySheeple.com, leading to the entire website being taken down for multiple hours on Monday, November 21 pertaining to an article detailing the #Pizzagate emails.

Reddit CEO says he modified pro-Trump posts on The Donald subreddit after closing down #pizzagate discussion

The CEO of user-generated news aggregator Reddit has admitted he modified posts on the most-visited Donald Trump community page of the discussion site after its users insulted him.

The controversy kicked off earlier this week after the New York Times countered unfounded 'fake news' claims that a Washington, DC, pizza restaurant was home to a child abuse ring allegedly run by Hillary Clinton and her campaign head John Podesta.

There was no evidence to support the claims, but the allegations became viral - on Reddit, too, with the 'r/Pizzagate'community gaining momentum.

That's when Reddit intervened by shutting down the related 'subreddit' and posting, "We don't want witchhunts on our site."

Comment: True, there is no hard evidence of a pedophile ring. But there is a whole lot of evidence that the people involved are not paragons of virtue, to put it mildly: Progressive liberal values: Tony Podesta's creepy taste in art, the creepy people he hangs out with, and Pizzagate

Not everyone was satisfied with the step, though. The 'r/The_Donald'community was outraged and began leaving insulting comments for Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, using his Reddit username 'u/spez' to ensure he received notifications of their messages.

Grindr serial killer found guilty - UK police say 'dating apps must work to prevent crime'

Dating apps must do more to protect their users' safety, Scotland Yard has warned, as police chiefs are probed over their failure to stop Grindr serial killer Stephen Port, amid fears he may have murdered more men.

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) said tech firms need to do more to prevent their users becoming victims of sexual predators after 41-year-old chef Port was found guilty on Wednesday of raping and murdering four men he met on dating apps, including Grindr and Gaydar.

Port will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday for the rape, sexual assault and murder of the four men in his London flat.

Following the guilty verdict, police chiefs are also urging app developers to do more to protect their users from violence.

Police lead for LGBT issues at the NPCC, Chief Constable Jane Sawyers, told the BBC the companies "could do more to prevent the offenses in the first place."

A truck bomb at a gas station has killed at least 80 people south of Baghdad, Iraq, according to authorities cited by Reuters. The attack, claimed by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), likely targeted Iranian Shiite pilgrims.

At least 32 others were injured by the explosion, Iraqi officials told AP.

The blast, which took place in the village of Shomali, 120km southeast of the capital Baghdad, ripped through a gas station at which seven buses carrying pilgrims were parked.

"At least seven buses with pilgrims were inside the petrol station at the time," a police officer told AFP.

The 'official' radiation risk model: Nuclear bomb test veterans' long wait for justice

nuclear test veterans
© Mirror OnlineNuclear test veterans bid for £1million to prove blasts caused cancer and birth defects
This summer families of atom bomb test veterans who have died of cancer took the UK government to the High Court for its failure to compensate them, writes Chris Busby. Also on trial was the 'official' radiation risk model, which understates the true health hazards of internal exposures by a factor of 1,000. But 17 weeks after the case, litigants and veterans are still awaiting judgment.

It usually takes no more than a few weeks for the High Court to deliver its judgments, six weeks at the most - and that's only in long and complex cases. Most often litigants get their judgment within a week or so.

But very much not in the case of Nuclear Bomb Test Veterans versus Secretary of State for Defence. We were in Court 25 of the Royal Courts of Justice in London for three weeks from 13th June. I was presenting the veterans' case.

Seventeen weeks have now passed since the case finished, yet the Judge, the distinguished QC Sir Nicholas Blake, has still not delivered his Decision. I can only wonder: why not?

Sir Nicholas never quite went out of his way to be kind to me, but his handling of the case was fair and I very much hope that the same fate has not befallen him, as befell a previous judge presiding over our case at an earlier stage of its slow progress through the court system.

'Hard Brexit now': Rally outside British parliament demands swift exit from EU

Protestors hold placards during an anti-European Union (EU) demonstration
© Ben Stansall / AFPProtestors hold placards during an anti-European Union (EU) demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament in London, on November 23, 2016, as British Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond delivers his Autumn Statement to MPs.
A crowd of 'Brexiteers' gathered outside the British parliament to urge a speedy exit from the European Union. Demonstrators accused the government of using loopholes to prevent the departure from taking place.

The Wednesday protest reportedly drew around 200 people, with demonstrators shouting "What do we want? Brexit! When do we want it? Now!" during the event.

Others held banners including slogans such as "Hard Brexit Now" and "Theresa May, don't delay. We want Brexit right away."

The demonstrators said they're frustrated with the British government, as very little has been done to begin the exit process since the June 23 vote to leave the European Union.
