Central Florida smacked with a foul stench in the wake of Hurricane Irma

bad smell
Not content to damage homes, toss trees and knock out power to millions, Hurricane Irma has left behind a noxious brew of funk, too.

Residents across the region Tuesday reported catching a whiff of a foul, rancid smell that officials blamed on dead fish, stagnant water, flooded ponds and rotting debris - but likely not sewage.

Juliana Calloway said she started to notice the smell Sunday - an acrid odor in the air outside her home in Altamonte Springs, like spent fireworks. At first, she feared a neighbor was burning debris. Soon, Calloway realized the stink wasn't just in her neighborhood - it was outside her office in Winter Park, too, and at her son's preschool.

"This morning, it was just so bad," she said. "I have a 4-year-old, and he was like, 'It smells like rotten eggs out here, Mommy.' "

The stench was reported in Orlando, Longwood, Altamonte Springs, Oviedo and Lake County, among other communities. Many took to social media Tuesday to complain.

La La Land: Morgan Freeman and Hollywood demand that Trump 'tell us the truth' about "Russian election interference"

Morgan Freeman
Veteran actor Morgan Freeman appeared in a political video published Monday, in which he demanded President Donald Trump speak directly to the American people about the extent of Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

While insisting that the Kremlin's election interference is "no movie script," Morgan said, "we need our president to speak directly to us and tell us the truth."

Comment: Trump already did tell the truth. That Morgan Freeman and many others don't accept the answer is the problem. They can't help but continue to hate on Trump (and Russia) and believe the lies told to them by the incredibly propagandistic and deceptive US media.

"We need him to sit behind the desk in the Oval Office and say, 'My fellow Americans. During this past election, we cam under attack by the Russian government," Freeman demands Trump to say, adding, 'I've called on Congress and out intelligence community to use every resource available to conduct a thorough investigation to determine exactly how this happened.'"

High school lands in hot water for slavery reenactment project

Cerrritos High School
Students tied up? Staff acting as slave ship captains?

As KCAL9/CBS2's Michele Gile reports, a high school in Cerritos is under fire after a controversial student history project about slavery.

Whitney High School junior Timothy Reyes had his hands taped together and was a part of a slave ship reenactment when he was an 8th grader on the Cerritos campus.

A mother complained recently after getting an email from her son's teacher explaining the "unique classroom activity," which was to be a surprise. Staff would act as slave ship captains, the email described, and the children slaves.

After lining the kids up, the note said, they'd "use masking tape to 'tie' their wrists together, make them lay on the ground, and in a dark room have them watch a clip from the film 'Roots.' "

Why banning 'hate speech' will only make it stronger

Frederick Douglass
Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one's thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down. They know its power. Thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, founded in injustice and wrong, are sure to tremble, if men are allowed to reason...There can be no right of speech where any man...[is] compelled to suppress his honest sentiments. Equally clear is the right to hear. To suppress free speech is a double wrong. It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker."

- Frederick Douglass
A recent survey conducted by the Brookings Institution adds to my already festering concerns about American attitudes when it comes to our most precious civil liberty. Free speech.

Let's start out by highlighting some of what we learned. First, via an opinion piece in The Washington Post:
Here's the problem with suggesting that upsetting speech warrants "safe spaces," or otherwise conflating mere words with physical assault: If speech is violence, then violence becomes a justifiable response to speech.

Students in a sociology class at San Diego State University can earn extra credit if they take a quiz to determine their level of "white privilege."

Professor Dae Elliott offered the option to her sociology class students, a "White Privilege Checklist" that includes 20 questions that aim to illustrate that "racial privilege is one form of privilege."

Some of the questions include:
I can choose blemish cover or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin.

I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race.

I am not made acutely aware that my shape, bearing, or body odor will be taken as a reflection on my race.

I can enroll in a class at college and be sure that the majority of my professors will be of my race.
At the end of the quiz, students were also made aware of other forms of privilege, such as "gender, sexual orientation, class, and religion," as well as asked to define any more types they can think of.

Students were instructed by Professor Elliott to add up their scores, with a higher score meaning they had a high level of privilege and a lower score meaning they had a lower level of privilege.

New report says Britain ranks number 1 in Europe for online jihadist propaganda

© Global Look Press
Online jihadist propaganda gets more views in the UK than in any other European country, according to a new report.

Britain is ranked fifth in the world scale of audiences accessing online extremist material, trailing behind Turkey, the US, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, the Policy Exchange study found.

The report suggests a majority (74 percent) of the 2,001 Britons it surveyed would support new laws to criminalize the "persistent consumption" of extremist material online.

In fact, while it is currently an offence to possess information that could assist a would-be terrorist under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000, it is not illegal to possess material which glorifies terrorism.

Although the government has called on social media giants like Facebook and WhatsApp to crack down on jihadist material, former US military chief General David Petraeus, who wrote a foreword to the report, said current regulations aimed at tackling the propagation of online extremist material are "inadequate."

10 newly-arrived US tanks in Poland to show Russia who's boss... damaged passing railway station

us tank meme
Ten American tanks were damaged while being transported by rail from the Polish city of Gdansk to a training ground after failing to fit under a train station roof, RMF 24 reported.

A total of 37 tanks were being taken from Gdansk to a training ground in Zagan, according to the Polish media outlet. However, 10 were damaged in transit after they did not fit under the roof at a station in Kowalewo Pomorskie.

"As a result of being hooked up to the train's light, 10 of the 37 vehicles being transported - combat vehicles and skeletons - were damaged," said Jaroslaw Wisniewski, a press officer for the police headquarters in Golub-Dobrzyn.

Comment: 20 fighter jet crashes in the last two years, 2 navy destroyers colliding with tankers in just a few weeks, 2 major training accidents at US bases on the same day, and now this.

At this rate, the US is literally going to militarily destroy itself.

The opioid crisis is taking a huge chunk out of America's small-town finances

autopsy
As deaths mount in America's opioid crisis, communities on the front lines face a hidden toll: the financial cost.

Ross County, a largely rural region of 77,000 people an hour south of Columbus, Ohio, is wrestling with an explosion in opioid-related deaths - 44 last year compared to 19 in 2009. The drug addiction epidemic is shattering not just lives but also stressing the county budget.

About 75 percent of the 200 children placed into state care in the county have parents with opioid addictions, up from about 40 percent five years ago, local officials say. Their care is more expensive because they need specialist counseling, longer stays and therapy.

That has caused a near doubling in the county's child services budget to almost $2.4 million from $1.3 million, said Doug Corcoran, a county commissioner.

Comment: Small detail Reuters left out: the heroin comes from Afghanistan, occupied by the US since 2001.

A device which exploded outside a café in Salford was packed with nails and screws, the M.E.N. can reveal.

It was left under the shutters of The Lounge in Concord Place, Douglas Green, Pendleton earlier this week. It caused damage to the shutters, canopy, windows and pavement.

A loud bang, at around 12.30am on Tuesday, could be heard across Greater Manchester.

It came after a Vauxhall Corsa car was badly damaged when an industrial style firework was attached to the rear of the vehicle in a street in Eccles three days earlier.
