Two-thirds of US voters believe former President Donald Trump beat Joe Biden in the first presidential debate on Thursday, CNN has reported, citing a survey. Democrats are panicking over the incumbent president's poor showing following the 90-minute debate in Atlanta, Georgia, according to several media outlets.

Many, including CNN, have noted that the 81-year-old Democrat suffered multiple awkward pauses, made inaccurate statements, and failed to outline his own accomplishments during the debate. Biden also kept jumping abruptly from one topic to another.

CNN, citing the findings of a flash poll of 565 registered US voters, reported that 67% believe Trump came out on top in the debate. The other 33% thought Biden had outperformed his rival. The media outlet noted that, prior to the event, 55% of the same group of voters said they expected the Republican to put up a stronger showing, while 45% had more confidence in the incumbent.

However, Biden insisted "we did well" following the performance. The president also said that "it's hard to debate a liar," and added that he had a sore throat, as quoted by the US print pool.

Comment: How one could watch that debate and think anything other than Biden bumbled his way out of a job is astounding.

Russian lawmakers have prepared a draft bill that would ban child-free ideology in the country, Deputy Justice Minister Vsevolod Vukolov has said.

The active promotion of childlessness has become increasingly common over the past decade, and is an "extremist ideology" that Russia should resist, Vukolov argued on Thursday in a speech at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

"We are now actively preparing bills to prevent the spread of child-free ideology," he said. One should not be able to promote ideas that "nowadays girls, especially young ones, do not need to give birth, they can do without children," the official added.

Anti-semitism 'watchdog' asks Biden to fire gay staffer

Tyler Cherry

An anti-Semitism watchdog has called on US President Joe Biden to fire a recently promoted staffer after his anti-Israel social media posts resurfaced amid the war in Gaza.

Tyler Cherry, who was named associate communications director at the White House earlier this month, has deleted nearly 2,500 posts on X (formerly Twitter), Fox News reported on Monday, citing data from the Social Blade analytics website. Before his promotion, the openly gay LGBTQ activist held a similar position in the Department of the Interior.

Israel-based analyst Eitan Fischberger noted that Cherry had used the hashtag #FreePalestine in the past and criticized the US government for selling weapons to Israel in old posts. "Cheersing in bars to ending the occupation of Palestine - no shame and f**k your glares," Cherry wrote in 2014, according to a screenshot shared by Fischberger. The Biden staffer also reportedly praised activist Linda Sarsour, who herself had been repeatedly accused of anti-Semitism.

New video and documents revive questions about Saudi role in 9/11 attacks

A group of families of 9/11 victims released a video overnight, claiming it's new evidence that Saudi government officials were involved in planning the attacks on U.S. soil.

Investigators for 9/11 Families United claim the video shows a Saudi intelligence official casing the U.S. Capitol around the same time al-Qaida was deciding on targets for the attacks.

The group sent NewsNation the video after a judge released it by court order. The video has been referenced in court filings as part of a civil lawsuit filed by victims' families against Saudi Arabia seeking to hold the country liable for its role, if any, in the attacks.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and all were members of al-Qaida, then led by Osama bin Laden, who was born in Saudi Arabia and whose family had close ties to the Saudi royal family.

Best of the Web: German woman convicted of 'offending' migrant gang rapists receives longer prison sentence than the rapists

A 20-year-old woman in Hamburg, Germany, has been sent to prison after making "hateful" remarks towards a migrant who was involved in the gang rape of a child. The woman is just one of 140 people being investigated for making "harmful comments" towards the rapists.

The horrific assault took place in 2020, and involved multiple groups of migrant men independently attacking a 14-year-old girl in Hamburg's Stadtpark over the course of one night. The park had become a popular hang-out spot for youth during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and the girl had been there drinking with her friends. But they became scattered after police swept the park and broke up groups while enforcing social distancing measures.

Confused and alone, the girl was defenseless against the first mob of four predators.

The men took turns on the girl, repeatedly raping her over an extended period of time. They robbed her of her wallet and cellphone before leaving her. Traumatized and disoriented from the first attack, and having no method of calling for help, the girl was assaulted a second time by two more men who took advantage of her vulnerable state.

Disturbingly, her assailants had begun inviting other men to rape her via their chat groups, gleefully sharing the news that there was an isolated teenage girl in the dark park with no potential witnesses. The child was attacked a third time by a single man, and then a fourth time by three more men, who dragged her into a bush and sexually assaulted her.

Comment: The outcome of this horrific case is a rape of justice.

Environmental activists win landmark ruling over UK oil well plan

Planning authorities should have considered the impact of climate-warming emissions in approving an oil well near Gatwick Airport, the UK's highest court said on Thursday, a ruling activists say could profoundly impact new fossil fuel projects in Britain.

Environmental campaigners had argued that planning permission to retain and expand the oil well site near London's Gatwick was flawed because it had not considered the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from the use of the oil.

Supreme Court judges agreed by a narrow three to two majority, and quashed the planning approval which they said was unlawful.

While the court said councils could still approve schemes even if they were likely to cause significant harm to the environment, campaigners said the landmark judgment would make it much harder for new oil, gas and coal developments to get approval.

Friends of the Earth lawyer Katie de Kauwe said:
"This historic ruling is a watershed moment in the fight to stop further fossil fuel extraction projects in the UK and make the emissions cuts needed to meet crucial climate targets. It is a huge boost to everyone involved in resisting fossil fuel projects."
The campaign groups said the ruling could hit proposals for other controversial schemes such a new coal mine in Cumbria, northern England, as well as North Sea oil and gas projects.

Now experts are asking whether milk is racist as part of a tax-payer funded research project into connections between milk and colonialism

A taxpayer-funded project is set to research connections between milk and colonialism, it was revealed yesterday.

Academics at an Oxford museum will research the 'political nature' of milk and its 'colonial legacies'.

One of the experts involved has previously argued that milk is a 'Northern European obsession' that has been imposed on other parts of the world.

Dr Johanna Zetterstrom-Sharp said the assumption that milk was a key part of the human diet 'may be understood as a white supremacist one', as many populations outside Europe and North America have high levels of lactose intolerance in adulthood.

Comment: Try genetics!

The new project, 'Milking it: colonialism, heritage & everyday engagement with dairy', has won funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Comment: Milk is a choice, always has been. 'Racism' is in the mind of the beholder, not the color of the beverage.

Julian Assange is finally free, but no thanks to the media

It is only right that we all take a moment to celebrate the victory of Julian Assange's release from 14 years of detention, in varying forms, to be united, finally, with his wife and children - two boys who have been denied the chance to ever properly know their father.

His last five years were spent in Belmarsh high-security prison as the United States sought to extradite him to face a 175-year jail sentence for publishing details of its state crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

For seven years before that he was confined to a small room in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, after Quito awarded him political asylum to evade the clutches of a law-breaking US empire determined to make an example of him.

DHS identifies over 400 migrants brought to the U.S. by ISIS-affiliated human smuggling network

Over 150 have been arrested, but the whereabouts of over 50 remain unknown, officials said. ICE is looking to arrest them on immigration charges when they are found.

The Department of Homeland Security has identified over 400 immigrants from Central Asia and elsewhere who crossed into the U.S. in the past three years as "subjects of concern" because they were brought by an ISIS-affiliated human smuggling network, three U.S. officials tell NBC News.

While over 150 of them have been arrested, the whereabouts of over 50 remain unknown, the officials said, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement is looking to arrest them on immigration charges when they are located.

One of the U.S. officials said people affiliated with ISIS are operating as human smugglers in Central Asia and helping people there leave their countries and travel to the West, where they are then smuggled into the U.S. It is not known whether the human smuggling activity directly funds ISIS activity or whether ISIS members are making personal money through human smuggling on the side, the U.S. official said.

Pepe Escobar: BRICS+ Cities Unite in Kazan, Ushering in New Era of Cooperation

The idea, by Kazan mayor Ilsur Metshin, was as simple as quite revolutionary. Why not profit from the year of the Russian presidency of BRICS - with the first BRICS + summit taking place in Kazan next October - to come up with a new association uniting BRICS+ cities?

Mayor Metshin is a big fan of the "development oh horizontal links between cities." Kazan's experience in inter-municipal cooperation already spans over a quarter of a century, with places all over the world, and agreements on twinning relations struck with 71 cities.

The objective of the new association is to advance closer cooperation on several fields - from economy, culture and education to ecology, waste management and tourism. Like a giant city-to-city running dialogue - based crucially, to quote comrade Xi Jinping, on "peoples to peoples' exchanges".

BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities Unites Over 18,000 Members
13:35 GMT 21.06.2024

At least 200 mayors from 21 countries have attended the International Forum of BRICS+ Cities in Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan.

The participants of the forum have signed an agreement to establish the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities.
[...]
They clarified that the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities aims to be a platform for international cooperation, experience sharing, and joint project implementation. Cities within the association will have the opportunity to more rapidly adopt innovative solutions across all areas of urban life. The committees of the association will address a variety of aspects of modern city life, ranging from transportation to architecture and ecology."

The association will boost cooperation in the economy, culture, education, and ecology. It will be an important source of valuable knowledge and a stimulus for learning and implementing the experiences of other cities for the benefit of our residents. That's why our initial initiatives will focus on education and common knowledge sources. We will announce them shortly," Metshin stated.

The headquarters of the association will be established in Dubai. Municipalities from not only BRICS countries but also other interested states will be able to join, added the forum's press service.
