Fending for himself: Poroshenko may be open to deal with Moscow

With the Ukrainian president's Petro Poroshenko policy in a shambles, he may be exploring ways for a deal with Moscow.

The recent visit to Kiev by Boris Gryzlov, a senior Russian politician and confidant of president Vladimir Putin, has stirred controversy in Ukraine. Gryzlov's secret talks with Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko may mark the high point of a series of efforts Kiev and Moscow has made to reach a working relationship in order to defuse the conflict racking Ukraine's eastern regions.

With the US, and by extension Poroshenko's, policy in Ukraine, in a shambles, the Ukrainian president is scrambling for ways to shore up his sagging political fortunes. As the West has become frustrated with his erratic policies, Poroshenko, despite his strident anti-Russian bluster in public, privately has been exploring avenues for a rapprochement with Russia.

Russia to create four new military divisions, response to NATO expansion threat

Russia says it will create four new military divisions this year in an effort to reinforce its military forces amid increased exercises by NATO members states. Russian Ground Forces Commander General Oleg Salyukov said on Friday Moscow plans to form the divisions in the western and central regions of the country in 2016. "Formation of these divisions is a measure to respond to the increase in intensity of exercises among NATO member countries that's been seen recently," said Salyukov.

Salyukov also announced that the Russian military will take part in seven international drills this year. He said the military exercises, including a joint Russia-Pakistani drill as well as a Russian-Vietnamese exercise, will be held in "the context of interaction with our foreign partners in 2016."

Russia has long considered the expansion of NATO toward its borders a threat. Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a defense strategy document that declared NATO a threat to the country's national security. Putin signed the document in response to a rising military presence by NATO countries in Eastern Europe and the Baltics.

The Western military coalition has increased its troop and equipment presence in Poland and the Baltic nations in order to deter perceived Russian threats. Montenegro, a former Soviet bloc country, has been invited to join NATO.

Comment: Russia is responding to the Pentagon's moves to increase forces in Europe, under formal alliance command, and build up American presence to counter (nonexistant) Russian threats. While Russia is "increasing what military leaders call anti-access, area denial forces - air defense systems, surface-to-surface missiles, antiship weaponry - that can be used to keep opposing military equipment at arm's length," the US and NATO are increasingly aggressive, most notably at Russia's doorstep.

Israel won't be pleased: China backs establishment of independent State of Palestine

China has lent its support to the establishment of the State of Palestine with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made the remarks during an address at the Arab League's headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Thursday.

He said such state should be established based on the 1967 borders and enjoy full sovereignty.

That year saw Israel occupying and then annexing the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds during the Six-Day War in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

Xi's remarks echoed the demands of Palestinians, who are seeking to create an independent state on the occupied territories as well as the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

Over 110 refugees have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of 2016, making it the deadliest January on record, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Friday.

"With more than a week left in the first month of 2016, IOM reports that deaths of migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean already make this the deadliest January on record. Deaths in the past 24 hours bring to at least 113 the total number of fatalities recorded, which is more than the past two Januaries combined, when 94 deaths were recorded - 12 in January 2014 and 82 last year," IOM spokesman Joel Millman said in a statement.

Erdogan converting Turkey into authoritarian police state that arrests anyone who speaks up against government

Recep Erdogan is converting Turkey into a police state by granting sweeping powers to the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and cracking down on independent journalism and political opposition; in this light Erdogan's reference to Hitler's Germany as a presidential system model comes as no surprise.

Recep Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (or AKP) is taking steps toward transforming Turkey into an authoritarian police state, where the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) plays the role of Tayyip's personal "Praetorian Guards," Istanbul-based independent scholar Dr. Can Erimtan notes.

"Last year, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (or AKP) took steps towards converting the Republic of Turkey into a just another typical Middle-Eastern 'Mukhabarat state,' a state where official intelligence services are busy keeping taps on the people while developing all kinds of nefarious cross-border activities embroiling the country in all kinds of dodgy affairs and/or relations," Dr. Erimtan writes in his recent article for New Eastern Outlook.

The scholar calls attention to Turkey's legislation that provides MIT with sweeping powers. "The National Intelligence Organization has really been able to act with impunity since the adoption of Law Nr. 6532 [on April 26, 2014] with arbitrary phone tapping constituting but tip of the iceberg of its activities," Erimtan notes.

Thousands of people have gathered in Grozny to show their support for Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen republic, whose statements about the 'non-system' Russian opposition have recently drawn significant criticism from political liberals.

The rally started on Friday morning on the central square of Grozny in front of the 'Heart of Chechnya' mosque. Footage from the event was broadcast live by Chechen channel Grozny TV. The official name of the event, which was organized by local youth organizations, was "Our Power is in Unity."

Litvinenko wasn't poisoned by Putin - He was likely smuggling the polonium that killed him

Berezovsky
Boris Berezovsky
As we all know Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned by polonium, a rare radioactive substance. The main narrative blamed it all on Vladimir Putin of Russia. The rationale rested on little other than because Litvinenko was a Putin critic. This was the quick line in mass media, and it was on all the typical war propaganda channels.

There are many things wrong with the "Putin did it" story. For one, there is no motive, even with Litvinenko being a critic of Russia, he was no threat whatsoever to Putin. The man worked with Chechen terrorists and the Israeli-Russian oligarchs. But assuming that there was a sufficient motive to kill him, think about this: Why would Russia use a very rare, very expensive, and easily traceable radioactive substance to kill him instead of some cheap poison or just shooting him? Why risk smuggling radioactive material into the UK which is an act of war?

Yet that is exactly what the UK/US media would have you believe. They want to say that Putin had someone sneak into the UK with polonium and poison Litvinenko with it. It just isn't plausible. It's actually absurd.
