France's terror spiral will end when France stops being a rogue state

French police
French shock at the murder of an elderly priest by two knife-wielding Islamist terrorists is understandable. The 85-year-old cleric, Father Jacques Hamel, was forced to his knees before the tiny mass-going congregation in a Normandy parish church, when his throat was slit. The killers then proceeded to film themselves proclaiming a macabre Arabic ritual on the church's altar.

Expressing the nation's horror, Father Philippe Maheut, the vicar general for the Rouen district in northern France where the murder took place earlier this week, reportedly said: "We ask ourselves: how have we arrived at this point?"

The shock of the barbaric slaying is all the more compounded coming less than two weeks after a Tunisian-born man smashed a 19-ton lorry into crowds of pedestrians watching a Bastille Day fireworks display in the Riviera resort city of Nice. French authorities say that attack - in which 84 people were killed - was also motivated by Islamist terrorism.

Observations of US airstrikes that hit Libya to bolster UN-created government

Libya bombing
The Pentagon has announced today that the US has begun conducting military airstrikes against Libya with the stated intent of defeating ISIS in that country. According to the Pentagon spokesman, the Libyan "Government of National Accord" requested that the US begin airstrikes against what they claim is an ISIS stronghold in the Libyan town of Sirte, the birthplace of murdered Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Pentagon Spokesman Peter Cook has indicated that this is the beginning of a more sustained US air campaign against Libya and that each US airstrike is approved by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

Moldova a 'sacrifice' for Western banks while neighboring Transnistria is Russian success story

Introduction

Moldova is Europe's poorest country. Tiny, landlocked, and with a population of about 3 million and shrinking, she is often ignored in modern writing on Eastern Europe. She is one of the many castaways of the 1990s, the imposition of the "free market" and the "end of history."

She is a "sacrifice" for the billions for western bankers and yet, she was an important part of the old USSR. After the breakup of the empire in 1990-1991, she fared even worse than Ukraine, reaching fourth world poverty levels.

Like so much in Eastern Europe, Moldovans overwhelmingly reject and west and "free markets." Their sole hope is a customs union with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The much smaller Transnistrian Republic, formerly a part of Moldova, is expanding
rapidly within the Russo-Chinese market and is proof of this argument, but the Romanian side, welded to the west, has failed.

Well said: Bolivia's Evo Morales considers Clinton versus Trump battle irrelevant

It is irrelevent which presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, wins the upcoming elections because the country is controlled by industrialists and bankers, not the president, Bolivian President Evo Morales told Sputnik.

"Unfortunately, nothing will change, it doesn't matter who the US president becomes. Unfortunately, the American people are being cheated, they are forced to vote. Will their chosen one rule? Does [current President Barack] Obama rule? Industrialists, bankers rule, they are the ones who are in control. In my opinion, it doesn't matter who becomes the US president, he [or she] would still not rule," Morales said in an interview.

Best of the Web: Russia defeats terrorists while America hails a freak show

Aleppo damage

A curious thing in the Western media this weekend is how little coverage is being given to a momentous victory unfolding in Syria. The Syrian Arab Army and Russian forces are about to close the final chapter in the five-year war - and the Western media don't seem to want to know about it.

Indeed, far more media coverage is given to Hillary Clinton's nomination as the Democrat's presidential candidate. While Clinton was declaring to her party's convention how she would wipe out Islamist terrorists in the Middle East, the Syrian army and its Russian allies were actually getting on with that very job.

Syria's northern city of Aleppo - which was the country's biggest city before the onset of the war in 2011 - is about to be fully retaken by the Syrian army, supported by Russian air power. Humanitarian corridors have been created to allow civilians and surrendering fighters to escape before the final assault begins on anti-government militias holed up in the east of the city.

The U.S. government tortured children as 'National Security Threats' - Human Rights Watch report

Syrian child

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has just released its report, "Extreme Measures: Abused Children Detained As National Security Threats."

From my reading of the report, Israel and the US are the two worst abusers. Boko Haram is a distant third.

Which country is the worst abuser, Israel or the US? Taking into account that the US is responsible for the violence in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria that has resulted in torture and detention, if we include these victims in the American total, then the US is the Number One torturer of children. As it is unlikely that Israel could get away with abuse of Palestinian children without Washington's support, we can add Israel's abuses to Washington's total.

Guantanamo Bay is a great distance away from Washington's wars against Muslims in Afghanistan, North Africa and the Middle East. Yet even at Guantanamo, where the only violence is the violence that the US military inflicts on detainees, the US government tortured children, according to the Human Rights Watch report.

What kind of military tortures children? The only answer that I can come up with is a military that has no self-respect.

What kind of US government would pay two US psychologists $81 million to help the CIA devise torture techniques? Only a lawless government with no respect for US law and international law.

A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for lies, death and destruction

And Barack Obama says Donald Trump is unfit to be president.

While candidate Hillary Clinton claims everything going wrong with her presidential campaign should be blamed on the Russians, the media appear to be (willfully) ignoring the trove of emails hacked and released by Wikileaks when Clinton was Secretary of State. The contents of which should disqualify her from political office and evidence enough to have her serve a term in prison.

Here is the short list of Hillary's time and crimes as America's top diplomat:
  • Knowledge of weapons being sent to jihadists, including to terrorists in the Islamic State
  • Played a key role in funneling weapons from Libya to U.S.-backed terror groups in Syria
  • Supported violent regime change in Libya because Moammar Gadhafi intended to create a gold-backed currency for North African countries
  • Knowingly supported Al-Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria with the intention to create the Islamic State
  • Knowledge that Washington-backed rebels in Libya were massacring blacks and other war crimes while NATO forced regime change
  • Flagrant violations of numerous federal laws, illegal support for terror groups and revolutions, responsibility for mass death and destruction, and the inner workings of Libya and Syria were reduced to ruins

Former Turkish Air Force prosecutor: Gulen infiltrated Turkey's military for decades

gulen
Followers of Fethullah Gulen, the Islamic cleric accused of orchestrating Turkey's coup attempt, spent decades infiltrating the country's military and used stolen entrance exams to place students in key positions in its academies, a former Air Force prosecutor said.

The tactic was known to politicians and military personnel, who either turned a blind eye or were unable to stop it because Gulen's supporters also controlled military auditing and appointments, Ahmet Zeki Ucok said in an interview in Ankara on Monday. Both Gulen, who lives in self-exile in Pennsylvania and hasn't entered Turkey since 1999, and his Alliance for Shared Values have denied involvement in the failed military putsch on July 15.

"Almost all of the military personnel chiefs, almost all of the intelligence chiefs and 72 percent of the military judicial staff were members of this group," Ucok said. "The people who would have removed them were all members of the organization. They had the intelligence officials and military staff responsible for personnel."

In his investigative role, Ucok was among the first to research the Gulen movement and warn of its infiltration of the military. He himself was jailed in 2009 and served five years of a life sentence for his alleged role in a coup plot that was later revealed to have been based largely on forged evidence. His conviction was overturned and his original trial dismissed after then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government split with the Gulen movement, purged the judiciary of suspected Gulenist judges and re-opened the case.

Possible ban of Russian paralympic team deemed 'inhumane'

The Russian team could be banned from the Rio Paralympic Games, with the International Paralympic Committee set to make a decision in the coming days. The step came as "a complete surprise" and "shock," the head of the Russian Paralympic Committee told RT. "There were no warnings before. [The International Paralympic Committee] has decided to officially raise the question of suspending the work of our national Paralympic Committee, as well as its membership in the International Paralympic Committee," said Vladimir Lukin, the president of the Russian Paralympic Committee.

"We couldn't understand what this decision is based on. Most likely, it's about the McLaren report [on doping], but that report doesn't give any data about the Paralympic athletes at all. There is only one table which says that 35 doping test bottles were lost." Later, Lukin said the committee had received an additional letter about the lost tests, but the document didn't provide the names of athletes or any other specific information.

Comment: And we thought it couldn't get worse. This is blatant persecution of Russian athletes, a travesty for sport and humanity.

Brazilian marines perform riot control drills prior to Rio Olympics

Brazilian marines practiced riot control maneuvers on Flamengo beach, in southern Rio de Janeiro, in preparation for possible violent demonstrations during the 2016 Olympic Games. During the exercise, one ship deposited three troop transport trucks on the beach and another vessel put ashore 80 marines. Once they had disembarked, the soldiers boarded the trucks and headed for the National Monument to the World War II Dead near the Olympic facilities that will host the sailing trials.

About 1,000 marines participated in the full exercise, which included isolating the Santos Dumont airport, mooring or docking several ships, disembarking troops and lining up naval vessels across Guanabara Bay. At the same time, a helicopter also practiced the simulated rescue of a person supposedly injured in hypothetical local riots.

The commander of the land task force in Copacabana, Ricardo Henrique Santos do Pilar said that the exercise was "satisfactory" and was undertaken within the time period initially established for it. The operation was also undertaken within the parameters expected during the Games and would not have "interfered with the competition," authorities said.

On July 16, the Brazilian armed forces began a series of simulations involving various types of external threats to the Olympic facilities, but these wrapped up before the arrival of the first athletes, on July 24.
