The difference between Islam and clericalism in the Greater Middle East

islam
© Voltaire NetworkA politician may be an atheist, an agnostic or a believer. The fact that he pretends to serve God does not make his political party a Church.
It is fashionable in the West to talk about the "compatibility of Islam and democracy" or "Islam and secularism". These issues suggest that by nature Islam is clerical, and therefore not a religion, but a political current. Consequently, the most "radical" Muslims are terrorists and vice versa. And yet, for the last month, the Greater Middle East, with its mostly Muslim population, is dividing between the faithful followers of this religion and the partisans of a political system which is manipulating them.

Some of our our readers misunderstood a previous chronicle concerning the evolution of the Muslim world. I shall therefore clear up the questions concerning Islam before describing as precisely as possible its current situation.

In the first place, if you have a clear-cut idea about Islam, this means that you know only one of its forms, since the religion differs widely between Morocco and Xinjiang. Whether on the liturgical or the legal level, there is hardly any resemblance between the Islam of Sharjah and the Islam of Java.

This religion may be approached by a literal reading of the Quran, or by a contextualised reading, or even by an appraisal of the authenticity of the current Quranic text.

Laughable propaganda: Mattis claims Syria heeded U.S. warning - by not launching chemical attack that existed only in Mattis' mind

© Aaron P. Bernstein / Reuters
Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis claimed Wednesday that the Syrian government backed down after the White House said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces were preparing for another possible chemical attack.

"They didn't do it," Mattis said.

Comment: Because they never planned to. This has got to be the most pathetic display of American reality-creation in recent memory. You're a clown, Mattis. But hey, at least now you won't start a war with Russia, because you're completely outmaneuvered in Syria. The world is thankful for that.

Speaking to reporters aboard a flight to Brussels, the retired four star general gave few details to support the assertion that the Syrian military stepped back from plans for a possible chemical strike. On Monday, the White House warned that Syrian forces would "pay a heavy price" if they carried out another chemical strike.

Comment: If there was ever a sign that the U.S. military and foreign-policy establishment has been reduced to a pathetic, ineffectual braggart, this is it. After Sy Hersh's report exposing the Tomahawk attack as a total joke, this is the Trump admin's response. "No, really, Assad has chemicals! We saw him personally prepping the barrel bombs a few days ago! But we gave him a stern warning, and it turns out he didn't drop 'em. Guess we're really awesome and scared him out of it. USA! USA!"

Report implicates David Cameron and Prince William in World Cup bribing scandal while clearing Russia

david cameron prince william
The newly published full version of a report on the FIFA 2018/2022 bidding process alleges the former UK PM tried to persuade South Korea to trade votes in a clear violation of FIFA ethics rules. The publication comes after the report was leaked to German media.

The investigation into corruption allegations and other wrongdoings by bidders to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups was carried out in 2014 by the former chairman of the FIFA Ethics Committee Investigatory Chamber, US prosecutor Michael Garcia.

Until now only a brief summary of an over 400-page document was available to the public. However, after its contents were allegedly leaked to German tabloid Bild, football's governing body officially released the document in its entirety late Tuesday, "for the sake of transparency."

The report alleges that the fate of England's 2018 FIFA bid was decided at the highest level of the British government, with former Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William being personally implicated in breaching FIFA ethics code by colluding with officials from South Korea, which sought to host the tournament in 2022.

Comment: While the whole Western world was shouting about a nonexistent Russian doping scandal, the West's own leaders were already engaged in their own scandalous affairs to line their pockets. The hypocrisy is sickening, and the media is all too willing to engage in the same faux-morality to demonize Russia.

Parliamentary hearings on the legalizing cryptocurrencies in Russia may start soon, according to State Duma committee member Vadim Dengin. He told RIA Novosti draft laws could appear shortly.

"We will hold roundtable discussions and parliamentary hearings on digital currencies, particularly bitcoin," he said, adding the cryptocurrency will most likely become accepted throughout the world.

The parliamentarian added that there's no need to legalize digital currencies right now, but "it's time to think about that issue."

"Sooner or later, with the verification of users, we may probably even have bitcoin exchange offices... Such operations will also be possible via the internet, for example, if you are in the office or on the street," said Dengin.

In April, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Aleksey Moiseev said cryptocurrencies could be recognized in the country by next year as the central bank is working with the government to develop rules against illegal transfers.

More Bellingcat buffoonery, this time on discredited Khan Sheikyoun "chemical" attack

sarin
The pushback against Sy Hersh's latest piece of genuine investigative journalism in which he exposes the lie that the Government of Syria hit Khan Sheikyoun with a sarin gas attack on 4 April 2017 is based on ignorance and misinformation. One of those leading this effort is Eliot Higgins, who blogs under the handle, Bellingcat. Well worth asking, Who is Eliot Higgins? According to Wikipedia:
In 2012, when Higgins began blogging the Syrian civil war, he was an unemployed finance and admin worker who spent his days taking care of his child at home;[1] he is married to a Turkish woman.[3][4] . . .

Higgins has no background or training in weapons and is entirely self-taught, saying that "Before the Arab spring I knew no more about weapons than the average Xbox owner. I had no knowledge beyond what I'd learned from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rambo."[1] Higgins does not speak or read Arabic.[4]

Higgins is credited with being among the first to report on the widespread use of improvised barrel bombs by the Syrian government, a phenomenon which has spread to other troubled nations such as Iraq to combat insurgencies and opposition forces.[5][6]
Ah yes, an uneducated, inexperienced guy with an opinion who happens to be married to someone of Turkish descent. Nothing unusual there, right? Of course he's an expert on sarin (sarcasm fully intended).

Pyongyang wants to take revenge on former South Korean President Park Geun-hye and her accomplices for a recently "revealed" plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to the North's official state media.

North Korea promised to pursue and impose the death penalty on "traitor" ex-president Park and head of South Korean intelligence Ri Pyong Ho, as well as other "criminals of hideous state-sponsored terrorism" for the "heinous plot" against the DPRK leader, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, as cited by KCNA Watch on Wednesday.

The paper went on to say that all the perpetrators will "meet miserable dog's death at any time, at any place, and by whatever methods from this moment."

Kissinger suggests that chaos in the West could boost Russia

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Tuesday warned of Russia's simmering alienation from its western neighbors but said he believed that President Vladimir Putin will ultimately work toward cooperative relationships with countries on its borders.

During his diplomatic career, the 94-year-old senior statesman supported a policy of detente with the Soviet Union, opened relations with China and helped negotiate the Paris Peace Accords, which helped end U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. He was also involved in negotiating with Syria to stop the fighting that emerged from the 1973 war between Egypt and Israel.

Speaking at the Margaret Thatcher Conference on Security in London, Kissinger predicted ongoing friction with Russia over Ukraine and Syria. Russia, which has backed the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, on Tuesday dismissed U.S. claims that Assad was preparing for a chemical weapons attack. The United States has offered no evidence to support the claim.

UK still issuing anti-malarial "zombie drug" to its soldiers due to failing IT equipment

IT failures mean the anti-malarial drug Lariam, which is banned in many countries due to its widely reported psychotic effects, is still being issued to UK troops deploying to war zones around the world.

Senior military doctors have warned that failing IT equipment means that the dangerous drug, which can cause depression and hallucinations, is still being issued to military personnel despite a near total ban.

In 2016, the military apologized for using the drug, also known as Mefloquine, despite official warnings.Ministry of Defense (MoD) medical computers are reported to crash regularly.

The British Medical Association (BMA) is calling on the military to upgrade its systems to prevent "frequent software crashes or total loss of IT."
