Davos loses big time - Draghi on the way out in Italy

Draghi
© AtalayarEx Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi is out. He tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella. Mattarella is refusing for now. There will be another confidence vote. It shouldn't matter.

As is always the case with Italian politics, the story is always far murkier than the headline.

The headline is Five Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte could no longer back Draghi's government because he's doing nothing to deal with spiraling food and energy costs in Italy. Without M5S support it will be difficult, at best, for Draghi to maintain power.

The parties which 'won' the last election are now polling 3rd and 4th. M5S is now polling at just 12%. Lega just 15%.

It is Georgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy that lead the polls. And we are, at most nine months away from Italian elections.

I'd say nine weeks is more likely.

So, M5S and Conte making this move now is not in their favor. This implies something far deeper than what it looks like on the surface. It implies strongly that there is an urgency to removing Draghi that trumps basic power politics, that the future of Italy itself may be what's at stake.

And I think I might know why.

Russian-hating dream of Brzezinski clan nears fulfillment as Poland agrees to host permanent US base; turn Baltic Sea into NATO lake

Zbigniew/Mark

Mark Brzezinski, the U.S. Ambassador to Poland, is the son of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, a descendent of Polish aristocrats and mastermind of U.S. foreign policy for decades, whose dream was to use Poland as a base to try to weaken and destroy Russia. Mark is now at the center of the implementation of his dad's plans.

In late June, President Joe Biden announced before a NATO summit that the United States would establish a permanent military base in Poland, the first time the U.S. would have one on NATO's eastern flank.

The base will provide a permanent headquarters in Poland for the U.S. Army's V Corps.

At the moment there are already approximately 10,000 U.S. soldiers in Poland, which has provided a hub for U.S. and other Western countries' arms shipments to Ukraine.

Wishful thinking: Russia has lost 50,000 soldiers and 1,700 tanks. Oh, and Putin is ill

Admiral Tony Radakin

The commander of the British armed forces has called the rumours that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ill or could be killed "wishful thinking". Admiral Tony Radakin also stated that Russia poses "the biggest threat" to the UK and that its struggle would last for decades when the Conservative party choose a replacement for Prime Minister Boris Johnson. After suffering setbacks in the conflict in Ukraine, Russia's ground troops might now be less of a threat, according to the military leader.

Comment: Military analysts such as Scott Ritter would beg to differ. Russian losses are negligible, compared to the devastation the Ukraine forces have suffered. Furthemore, the good admiral's statements, other than the one regarding Putin, are nothing but bluster. From his latest RT article:
Even before the current Ukraine crisis kicked off, the British military served more as an object of derision than a template of professionalism. Take, by way of example, the visit of UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace to Zagreb, Croatia in early February 2022. Croatian President Zoran Milanovic accused the British of trying to incite Ukraine into a war with Russia, as opposed to trying to address Russia's concerns over the existing European security framework. Wallace flew to Zagreb for consultations, only to be rebuked by Milanovic, who refused to meet with him, noting that he only met with the defense ministers of superpowers, adding that "the UK has left the EU, and this gives it less importance."

But London keeps putting a brave face on a sorry reality. Take, for example, the offer of written security assurances to Sweden and Finland made by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. These pledges were designed to bolster the resolve of the two Nordic nations as they considered their applications to join NATO.

But there was no substance to the British offer, if for no other reason than the British had nothing in the way of viable military capability to offer either the Swedes or the Finns. Even as Johnson proffered the proverbial hand of assistance to his newfound Nordic allies, the UK Ministry of Defense was wrestling with planned force reductions that would see the British Army cut from its current "established strength" of 82,000 to 72,500 by 2025 (the actual strength of the British Army is around 76,500, reflecting ongoing difficulties in recruitment and retention.)

Even these numbers are misleading - the British Army is only capable of generating one fully combat-ready maneuver brigade (3,500 to 4,000 men with all the necessary equipment and support). Given the reality that the UK is already on the hook for a reinforced battalion-sized "battlegroup" that is to be deployed to Estonia as part of NATO's so-called enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) posture (joining three other similarly-sized "battlegroups" fielded by the US in Poland, Germany in Lithuania, and Canada in Latvia), it is questionable whether the British could even accomplish this limited task.
A round table of military analysts had this to say:

Europe's Death Rattle: Open Borders and Shut Mouths

Mass migration is not, as it seems, an organic emanation of humanity from poor countries, but a calculated project to repopulate the territory of the declining West, with racism its chief instrument.
Colm Brophy with Kenyan Dance crew
May 2022, Irish Minister of State for Overseas Development Aid and Diaspora, Colm Brophy with Kenyans Anne Waithira Burke, Susan Ngereso McDarby and Zambian Michael Chanda, all members of the NoWahal dance crew, gather to announce details of Africa Day 2022. Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union and is celebrated on May 25. It is supported by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Though, in his remarkable book, The Scramble for Europe, Stephen Smith tends to soft-focus these aspects, what we can see clearly from his analysis is that there is in train a cultivated exodus from Africa into Europe that is orchestrated from within the West, with motives that are self-evident to even the casual observer. Although conventional wisdom in the West has it that the issue of mass migration out of Africa (and by extension other 'developing' countries — for which read 'the undeveloping countries') is one of absolute need on one side and a 'duty' to step up and deliver 'compassion' on the other, the reality, as we have seen, is rather different. The vast majority of migrants are not 'the poorest of the poor' of popular bleeding-heart spin, but the relatively better-off. They are, as Smith explains, the ones who have managed to up sticks and come to the West as a direct result of Western aid that was, nominally at least, intended to provide Africans with a jumpstart in their own countries, but is instead functioning to suck the most intelligent and creative human life out of Africa and deposit it in Paris, Dublin, Berlin and London. The point of this has to do with neither the dreams and desires of the migrants nor — even less — the betterment of poorer countries, but is entirely about achieving certain outcomes in Western societies, the first among which is to drive down wages so as to make the world even more congenial to corporate interests. And there are other motives also, as we shall see.

Tucker Carlson excoriates 'corrupt' Ukraine

Fox News host Tucker Carlson issued a fierce condemnation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday over his crackdown on political opposition. While members of both parties in Washington rail against Russian President Vladimir Putin, "it is China that is on its way to controlling the world," Carlson claimed.

"What does the cause of liberty have to do with Ukraine?," Carlson asked. "Well, very little. Last February the Ukrainian government shut down opposition media, then they arrested the leader of the main opposition party. Now President Zelensky has decided to combine all television stations in Ukraine into a state-owned propaganda ministry."

US Navy provokes China in South China Sea for second time in just 4 days

A US Navy warship on Saturday challenged Chinese claims to disputed islands in the South China Sea, the US 7th Fleet said in a statement -- the second operation of its kind this week.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold sailed near the Spratly Islands -- known as the Nansha Islands in China -- in the southeastern South China Sea in a so-called "freedom of navigation operation" (FONOP), the 7th Fleet statement said.

The US Navy operation in the island chain where China has built military foritifications on man-made islands challenged "restrictions on innocent passage imposed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), Vietnam, and Taiwan," the statement said.

Saudi prince reminds Biden of US torture in Iraq

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman allegedly called out Washington's long track of "mistakes" made in Iraq and Afghanistan as President Joe Biden confronted him over the gruesome murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

That's according to Reuters, quoting a statement made by a senior Saudi official to Reuters on Saturday.

While Saudi Arabia admitted its "mistakes" made in the Khashoggi affair, it has "taken all measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future," the crown prince, commonly referred-to by the acronym MBS, was quoted as having told Biden.

MBS also apparently tried to downplay the significance of the murder of the journalist, who was slain and subsequently dismembered at the Saudi consulate in Turkey in 2018, pointing a finger at the US' own questionable record of human rights abuses. He also brought up the recent killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, slain during an Israeli raid in the West bank.

WH suggests breaching dams to save endangered salmon, even though it would worsen energy and supply chain issues

Biden and fish

The Biden administration's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommended breaching dams on the Snake River to ensure the survival of endangered salmon — a move that could jeopardize power supplies in the Pacific Northwest and worsen the supply chain crisis.

A Monday draft report from the agency suggested that the four lower Snake River dams should be breached to decrease travel time for salmon, as well as reduce stress on juvenile fish and encounters with powerhouses. The "earthen portion of each dam would be removed, and a naturalized river channel would be established around the concrete spillway and powerhouse structures," according to the report.

The dams, however, provide 3,033 megawatts of capacity to the Pacific Northwest, according to a 2016 fact sheet from the Bonneville Power Administration. The entity added this month that replacing the dams would cost $415 million to $860 million per year until 2045, amounting to a total cost of up to $19.6 billion and increasing electricity costs for households by up to 18% over the same horizon. The replacement is made more expensive over time "due to increasingly stringent clean energy standards and electrification-driven load growth."

Italy may soon be unable to arm Ukraine - foreign minister

Di Maio

Political turmoil in Italy could soon see Rome unable to continue supporting Ukraine with weapons deliveries, the country's foreign minister has warned. According to Luigi Di Maio, this would be the case should the incumbent government not survive a no-confidence vote next week.

In a phone interview with US media outlet Politico on Friday, Di Maio said that those in Italy who want the collapse of Prime Minister Mario Draghi's government are playing into the hands of the Kremlin.

"The Russians are right now celebrating having made another Western government fall," the minister argued.

Di Maio went on to express doubt as to whether Italy will be able to keep supplying arms to Ukraine under these circumstances, adding that "it is one of the many serious problems."

Comment: As is happening in Italy, the West neglects its own by deflecting attention to Ukraine and blame to Russia. As force increases without, pressure builds within.

Biden proved that Israel is a US proxy in the Middle East

American President Joe Biden landed in Israel on Wednesday and started his four-day tour of the Middle East, the first since he took office. Moments after landing in Tel Aviv, he delivered a speech which outlined his intentions during this controversial tour.

Biden has visited Israel several times before becoming president, with his first trip being in 1973 when he was a senator. He has repeatedly expressed his absolute support for Israel, regardless of its daily abuses of Palestinians and continuous violations against their legitimate rights.

In his speech on Wednesday, he repeated his support for the occupation state, highlighting that he is a Zionist Christian; emphasising that supporters of Israel don't need to be Jews.

He also told the journalist:
"As president, I'm proud to say that our relationship with the State of Israel is deeper and stronger, in my view, than it's ever been. And with this visit, we are strengthening our connections even further. We've reaffirmed the unshakable commitment of the United States to Israel's security, including partnering with Israel on the most cutting-edge defence systems in the world."
