As biting cold temperatures sweep across a large swath of the US, parts of the Great Lakes face up to two feet of additional lake-effect snow through Tuesday - the latest complication for cities already blanketed by snowfall amid post-Thanksgiving travel.

More than two million people downwind of the Great Lakes have been under winter weather warnings. Winter storm warnings were posted off Lakes Superior and Michigan, and lake-effect snow warnings are in place off Lakes Erie and Ontario, with heavy snow reported this weekend across parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York state.

Nearly 4 feet of snow fell on parts of western New York the last few days, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center, with some places exceeding the 4-foot mark Sunday. Copenhagen, New York, saw 58.8 inches - nearly 5 feet - by Sunday night, according to the weather service.

Best of the Web: US-Russia on the brink? A history of humiliation

After a history of U.S. bullying and humiliation — from a broken promise not to expand NATO to deceit over Minsk — it can't be assumed Moscow is bluffing when it warns of nuclear war.

In his momentous speech at American University in Washington 61 years ago, in which he controversially sought peace with Soviet Russia and an end to the Cold War, President John F. Kennedy said:
"Above all, while defending our own vital interests, nuclear powers must avert those confrontations which bring an adversary to a choice of either a humiliating retreat or a nuclear war. To adopt that kind of course in the nuclear age would be evidence only of the bankruptcy of our policy — or of a collective death-wish for the world."
Twenty-eight years later, the Bill Clinton administration and every U.S. administration since, culminating in perhaps the most reckless, has proven the bankruptcy of U.S. policy by doing the exact opposite of what Kennedy advised, namely displaying a determination to humiliate and bully nuclear-armed Russia.

Today that most frightening moment has arrived, one dreaded by generations. The United States on Monday continued to provoke Russia with American and British missile attacks on Russian soil fired from a third country with American and British personnel, ignoring Moscow's unequivocally clear warning that this could lead to nuclear conflict.

Best of the Web: Trump transition team inks modified White House agreement, without govt technology to conduct surveillance

The President Trump transition team has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to start the process of transferring control of the federal government. The landing teams from each of the cabinets will now begin to engage with their exiting counterparts.

There were many articles written about the delays in signing the agreements. However, President Trump waited until he has his cabinet fully assembled before signing the first part that permits the landing teams to engage. The second part with government provided offices and technology is NOT being accepted.

President Trump's Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, announced the Trump transition team has refused to sign an MOU with the Government Services Administration (GSA), and will not be using cell phones, computers, offices or "any technology" provided by the GSA. This is a smart move to avoid the Deep State surveillance situation that was faced in the first term.

Best of the Web: A whimper, not a bang: Where was Antifa after Trump's victory?

antifa
The Democrats had gone to the edge of American discourse — beyond which is the disintegration of normal political life — and then, when they'd been repudiated by the voters, meekly pulled back. Why?

Perhaps the only disappointment for those of us elated with the outcome of this month's presidential election was the muted, downcast response from the Left at Donald Trump's massive victory. We'd expected angry riots from purple-haired Antifa goons; emotive demonstrations of impotent and self-righteous defiance by Handmaid's Tale cosplayers; and, maybe best of all, delicious cable news highlight reels reminiscent of Hillary Clinton's surprise defeat in 2016. The quiet sobbing we got instead came as somewhat of a surprise.

For the Left, it all seemed to end, as it did at Kamala Harris's victory party at Howard University, with a whimper. There was no defiant or fiery speech that night; in fact, the candidate wasn't seen at all, unwilling to face even the dedicated supporters who had worked hardest for her candidacy. Over the next few days, while there was some hissing and a few entertaining misfiring synapses at MSNBC and CNN — including some angry denunciations of elements of the Democrat coalition — the emotion seemed forced and perfunctory.

Best of the Web: The Antisemitism Awareness Act is the death knell for free speech

stop killing children
Freedom of speech is the principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins....Ben Franklin
The Antisemitism Awareness Act is a wrecking ball designed to pulverize the First Amendment. While the alleged intention of the bill is to make Jewish students feel safer on campus, the real purpose is to put an end to the anti-genocide demonstrations that have broken out across the country and to prevent the criticism of Israel. The proposed bill invokes a dodgy legal mechanism to derail the protests and to silence Israel's critics. By using a broad and ambiguous definition of antisemitism, the bill compels university administrators to crackdown on free speech invoking sketchy claims of discrimination. Political analyst Paul Craig Roberts summed it up like this: "if universities ...don't suppress student protests against Israel's massacre of civilians in Gaza and Lebanon they will lose their accreditation and federal financial support." In short, universities are being encouraged to quash the free expression of political ideas to preserve their federal funding. This helps to illustrate how Zionist lobbyists are now engaged in a full-throated assault on constitutionally protected civil liberties, namely free speech.

A report from inside Gaza

Israel, fortified by bombs and funding from the Biden administration, is escalating the forced evacuation of hundreds of thousands from the north of Gaza to the south, amid fierce bombing and the deprivation of food and water for those who stay behind. This is continuing amid marches and other demonstrations sponsored by the religious right in Israel whose leadership also is calling for north Gaza to be turned over to Israeli settlers. What was a worrisome rumor in Gaza more and more seems like a reality.

Control over all of Gaza and the West Bank is the core demand of the religious right in Israel that now dominates the government. I was told this week by a well-informed Washington official that the Israeli leadership will formally annex the West Bank in the very near future — perhaps in two weeks — in the hope that the decisive step will end, once and for all, any talk of a two-state solution and will convince some in the skeptical Arab world to reconsider financing the planned reconstruction of Gaza. Arab communities in the West Bank have been under increasingly violent pressure from Israeli police and armed settler attacks have become a sad staple of life.

Best of the Web: Why Matt Gaetz Matters

Matt Gaetz
Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump's nominee to be the next Attorney General of the United States
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Matt Gaetz to be the next Attorney General of the United States. Many Americans are appalled and offended by this choice. I find it one of the best nominations made by Trump. Let me tell you why. And please take note — it is personal.

Let's get the easy part over with upfront.

On paper, Matt Gaetz isn't qualified to be the Attorney General of the United States.

His résumé is paper thin.

And he operates under a dark cloud of controversy which, under normal circumstances, would be automatically disqualifying.

And I'll add this — if Matt Gaetz is found criminally guilty of any of the things he has been alleged to have committed, then he is, in fact, automatically disqualified.

But herein lies the rub: he has not been found guilty of anything.

Best of the Web: Red Alert on Pacific Coast as flooding worsens in Costa Rica - November rainfall already up to 10 times more than normal - 3 feet in 6 days

mmmmm
The National Emergency Commission (CNE) in Costa Rica has issued a red alert for the Pacific coast as severe flooding and heavy rains continue. The rest of the country remains under an orange alert, with the Southern Caribbean under a yellow alert.

This heightened alert follows forecasts that the intense rainy conditions are expected to persist throughout the week. "Rainfall is projected to continue for the next several days, especially along the Costa Rican Pacific coast. Additionally, there is significant soil saturation across much of the country," the CNE reported.

In just six days, Guanacaste has recorded rainfall totals that typically match the entire month of November. "In some areas, rainfall levels have been 8, 9, or even 10 times the usual amount for November. If the average monthly rainfall is 130 millimeters, some areas have received up to 900 millimeters in just six days," explained meteorologist Daniel Poleo.

Many areas are experiencing unprecedented rainfall levels, with the North Pacific region especially impacted. "It's been an extraordinarily rainy month, which explains the numerous incidents in Guanacaste and the South Pacific," Poleo added.

Almería in southeast Spain has been hit with up to 70 litres of rainfall which fell in a matter of minutes, flooding roads and dragging away cars, as the country braces for another DANA storm that will leave plenty of heavy rain.

Spain is being hit with another 'DANA' storm which is already causing torrential rain and flooding in the southern Andalusian province of Almería.

Following the forecast from Spain's state meteorological agency (Aemet) on Monday, pre-emergency phase protocols were activated due to the risk of flooding in the province. In the early afternoon, a yellow alert was declared, which was then changed to orange in the evening.

Best of the Web: Trump's victory & the decline of Liberal Hegemony: "Unburdened by what has been"

Trump wins

The election victory of Trump should not have been a surprise. The era of liberal hegemony has already come to an end, and a correction is long overdue. The liberal hegemony is no longer liberal, and the hegemony is exhausted. Trump is often denounced for being transactional, yet the de-ideologization of America and return to pragmatism is exactly what the country needs.

Change or Preserve the Unsustainble Status-Quo?

The overwhelming majority of Americans believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction, which placed Harris as the incumbent in an unfavourable position. Harris as the Vice President could not distance herself sufficiently from President Biden's policies, which meant that she had to own the failures of the past four years. The message of "turning the page" did not resonate, and she was left with the meaningless slogan of "joy" - which only demonstrated her detachment from the growing concerns of Americans.

The borders have been wide open, media freedom is in decline, the government's overreach is growing, US industries are no longer competitive, the national debt is out of control, social problems and culture wars are going from bad to worse, the political climate becomes increasingly divisive, the US military is overstretched, the global majority rejects Washington's simplistic and dangerous heuristics of dividing the world into liberal democracy versus authoritarianism, the US is complicit in a genocide in Palestine and is heading towards nuclear war with Russia.
