A number of recent surveys indicate that Trump's support base is eroding as anger grows over rising fuel prices and economic strain

Six out of every 10 US citizens disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of the war against Iran, as rising fuel prices and a weakening US standing abroad weigh heavily on the country, according to a new PBS News/NPR/Marist poll published on 6 May.

Disapproval of Trump's war rose from 54 percent in March, while just 33 percent say they approve of Trump's Iran policy.

The findings also indicated increasing unease among Republicans. While 72 percent continue to support Trump's Iran policy, disapproval has risen to 22 percent, up from 15 percent in March.

Public opposition to the illegal war of aggression was broader, with 61 percent of US citizens saying US military action in Iran has "done more harm than good," including 25 percent of Republicans, while 38 percent of respondents said it has "done more good than harm."

Furthermore, the poll found that 62 percent of US citizens believe the role of the US on the world stage has been weakened by Trump's decisions, up from 57 percent in January.

Among Republicans, 22 percent said the US position globally has deteriorated, double the 11 percent recorded in January.

Economic conditions are adding to the pressure as 61 percent of US citizens disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy, up slightly from March, while only 35 percent approve.

The poll revealed that 63 percent of US citizens feel the economy is not working well for them personally, and 56 percent believe their local area is either "not very affordable" or "not affordable at all."

Gas prices have emerged as a primary source of public frustration, with over 80 percent reporting that current prices are stretching their household budgets, including 33 percent who consider the strain to be "major."

Most respondents attributed the rise in energy prices to Trump. The poll shows that 63 percent assign "a great deal" or "a good amount" of blame to him, including 63 percent of independents and 32 percent of Republicans.

Wednesday's poll was published a few hours after Trump announced a "suspension" of his so-called Project Freedom, which sought to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
