Holiday hotspot Tenerife has been hit by snow as Storm Therese continues to make its way across Europe. Shocked tourists expecting a sunny Easter break have been capturing snowfall, with the Canary Islands remaining under a weather alert following days of rainfall and high winds.

Forecasters are expecting the wild weather to continue for at least another five days, bringing flight cancellations on Thursday and dozens earlier in the week. Winds have reached around 75mph, while snow and rainfall have led to roads being closed for safety.

President of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, said: "Starting today at 3pm, the island emergency response system is put into operation to prepare for an episode of adverse weather that will affect Tenerife over the coming days."

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) released a warning via social media, predicting some areas could experience more than a year's worth of rain on Thursday, and issuing orange alerts for a number of areas.

The Canary Islands Government's Department of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families closed some nursery schools and day care centres on Thursday, according to Europa Press, while pre-school closures will be in place today in Gran Canaria and Tenerife.

On Spain's mainland, Andalusia has been placed under an orange alert for rough seas along the Granada Coast, with waves in western areas reaching as high as four metres.

Authorities in Tenerife activated an Island Emergency Plan on Wednesday afternoon, closing roads and national parks due to snow, with all outdoor events suspended.
