Mach 24, if read that way, is fast, but upon entry meteor speeds can vary between 11km/s and 71 or 72 km/s according to [Link] How much is that in Mach?
At sea level, one atmosphere of pressure and 15 degrees Celsius the speed of sound is 340.3 m/s according to this Wiki [Link] As one goes higher up in the atmosphere, the air is thinner and colder, at least until the tropopause and the speed of sound decreases. However if we translate the limits of between 11km/s and 72km/s working with sea level conditions, then 11km/s corresponds to Mach 32.3 whereas 72km/s corresponds to Mach 211.6
Example:
If you go to the CNEOS list [Link] the fastest listed, though not all speeds are actually given, within the last year was 40.4 km/s for
2024-05-18, 22:46:50 41.0N, 8.8W, 74.3, 40.4
[This was the one reported over Portugal and famously video recorded by a teenager.]
40.4 km/s is somewhere inbetween 11km/s and 72km/s or according to the calculator Mach 118.8
It can be interesting to consider that his meteor had a calculated total impact energy of 0.13. Since the kinetic energy increases with the square of the velocity, had this meteor been a slow mover with a third of the speed, the energy would have been 9 times less, or in this case a mere 0.014. Since the cut-off point is 0.073, it would not have made the list.
This page [Link] makes a model of how to estimate the speed of the Earth around the Sun based on the speed of meteors
You would also use escape velocity to determine the speed of a meteor that enters Earths atmosphere.
Meteors or what is called a fast meteor comes from comets and are rotating around the sun. Meteors from asteroid belt would be at falling or slow speed.
